Thank you for this. A superb actor indeed. His breathtaking performance in “The Hill”; his intensity in “Get Carter” and even his turn in the early surviving episodes of “The Avengers” are prime examples of a unique talent in full, creative flight.
back in the mid late 70's whilst i was a bar manager at the prince albert public house in golders green road hendry lived across the road in a side road flat & on our sunday music nights he would come into the hall slightly under the effects of alcohol & would take a turn on playing the drums which was all things considered was quite outstanding , R.I.P
Ian Henry’s first wife Janet drooped dead from brain aneurysm ( after they divorced) aged just 32. He had throat cancer for many years before he finally stopped treatment. He blamed his heavy drinking for the cancer. Good actor.
There are some basic errors in this video. After he divorced Janet Munro, Ian Hendry eventually married for the third time, and his wife gave birth to a daughter. He didn't have a son. He appeared in the very first episode of The Sweeney; in actual fact he was the very first character to appear on screen. Gabriel Hirschmann has written an excellent biography of Ian Hendry. If you'd bothered to read it your presentation would not be so full of errors.
I'll bet even Wikipedia got more things right about Ian Hendry than this so called fact channel. It said when he was in the Sweeney he played a character called Detective inspector Harris. In truth he played an armed robber called Dave Brooker. If the little things aren't right, goodness knows about the bigger things! If a RUclips channel is going to claim that what they're saying is fact, it would be nice if they were that! FACT!!!!
It's the usual tosh that happens when these American channels proliferate on YT - they haven't a clue about the British arts, culture or media of the time and produce absolute nonsense about the characters and actors who played them - usually they announce that they're dead when they're all still very much alive & kicking! I don't get what their current obsession is with British arts & culture but they could at least do some homework before they start telling us who we are/were!😖🙄
For USA viewers, the cop show The Sweeney was so called due to the London rhyming slang often heard back then. The Sweeney Todd ( 'The demon barber of Fleet Street' ) = The Flying Squad, which was the actual name of the Police unit it was based on; A fast response unit focussing on high profile gangland crimes.
Hendrys character in the sweeney was as a gangster in Bryan blessed s gang , he actually shoots blessed s character by mistake at the end , what is noticeable is how much older he looks in the 4 years since get carter , through heavy smoking n drinking
The two Roles I remember most, was, ( 1 ) as the TOP door to door Salesman in'' Live Now Pay Later'', he drove a Bedford ''Dormobile Van, that had sliding doors, he would slide his open, and at the same time, pull the handbrake on, cut the engine, and leap out as the Van would come to a stop outside the House he'd call at. I read that several owners of those very popular vans had tried to copy that trick. Many failed , and had collisions. Role (2 ) was as the Ganster Boss's chauffeur in , ''Get Carter'' starring Michael Caine.
Ian Hendry was born to do 'The Lotus Eaters' - he has incredible 'presence' in that series - and portrays a wonderful range of acting skills, from natural, day-to-day conversation to deeply-felt emotional scenes. His appearance in 'Get Carter' does him a disservice, really - even though it was a bigger role as it was a 'proper film' as opposed to a series. But one of his most brilliant roles was as the detective in 'Girl in the Headlines' (1963) - where he creates wonderful screen presence in his dogged determination to solve the crime. 'Get Carter' shows him in an unsuitable role - his real talent was that he could portray a believable person on the screen - you can almost hear him breathing.

My first memory of Ian was in a TV programme called "The Adventures Of Don Quick", back in 1970. It hasn't been shown in many decades. He was great in "Repulsion", "Get Carter", and of course "The Hill". He left far too early.
Anybody that could hold their own against Harry Andrews, who played the R.S.M. in The Hill, really could act as Harry Andrews was a great actor and both Ian Hendry and Sean Connery held their own against a formidable actor.
Ian Hendry played the part of a criminal gang with Brian Blessed in the Sweeny episode '' the Ringer'' Not a detective. I think he was also in Tails From The Crypt and Theatre Of Blood with Vincent Price '' both really good films too.
My last recollection was in the TV soap brookside and I thought then he didn’t look to healthy it wasn’t long after that he passed away a real shame considering the contribution he me to TV and film RIP Ian🙏🙏
"still got your sense of humour" - that's probably his most memorable line, from "Get Carter". He also gave great performances for "Continental" directors: in "Repulsion", with Caterine Deneuve, for Roman Polanski, and in "The Passenger", starring Jack Nicholson, for Michelangelo Antonioni.
I was a fan of Hendry although I could never figure out why. He wasn’t particularly good looking but he had a sort of presence that chimed for me. My favourite show of his was a TV series called “The Lotus Eaters” and I was also a fan of his female co-star, Wanda Ventham, in that series. He was an excellent actor. RIP
I agree, Ian Hendry was extremely versatile. I have many productions on DVD that he appeared in, including The Lotus Eaters , where he starred with Wanda Ventham
Fine actor who unfortunately enjoyed the sauce too much. It's said they even filmed his death in Get Carter first as Hendry would've been in too much of a state to do the scene after he had been running in the scenes that preceded it.
I think he was a great actor, the demon drink got him like many of his acting generation. He proposed to my sister once whilst paralytic bless him. RIP Ian.
Thanks so much for this, Ian was a very well respected and admired actor, the various screen appearances made him a firm favourite with viewers and his early demise was extremely sad. These were the days when UK TV was the very best in the world and produced so very well loved programmes and the people that acted in them, sadly all in the past now. RIP Ian.
Ian Hendry was the first Avenger. In fact it was his character that recruited his old army chum John Steed into the job! A cult UK actor who featured in so many great films, sadly drink was his mortal enemy. When he featured on This Is Your Life he was clearly sozzled, caught by surprise and half cut.. a great actor though. Goodbye Eric!!
One of my favourite actors. As others have commented, he has a defining screen presence. He could play " jack the lad" characters such as in This is My Street(1964) and convince the viewer that his own persona matched the role. Yet he played the pathetic Alex in the Internecine Project allowing himself to be bullied and manipulated by James Coburn and came across just as believable. I also liked his part in Journey to the Far Side of the Sun and his local gangster role in All Coppers Are ...(1972). What I've often noticed is that he popped up in single episodes of series throughout the sixties and seventies when he was already an established actor and I find I'm looking for him in further episodes because he was so watchable! TPTV recently showed a series I thought was lost from 1969 called the Gold Robbers. Ian was in one episode of that. Very accomplished and much missed.
Live Now Pay Later wasn't exactly a comedy - at least one of the characters comes to a tragic end, if I remember right. The movie was very nearly lost altogether. Its 2020 reissue on DVD was from the only print known to exist at the time. No mention of an ITV drama series Hendry appeared in in 1966-7 - The Informer, about a disbarred barrister who makes a new career trading information for monetary reward. Only two episodes have survived the wholesale wiping so common in UK TV in those days.
A great actor, he was in some excellent films, a very talented man. Such a shame, he died so young, towards the end he unfortunately ended up an alcoholic, very sad. I remember reading a comment about him by Ricky Tomlinson, who was working in a TV programme with Ian, mentioned even though Ian was at the time suffering personal health issues, he was still a great actor, someone Ricky greatly admired.
Apparently, Hendry didn't get on with Michael Caine during the making of Get Carter. I think there may have been some jealousy involved. I always assumed that Hendry was born in Scotland and also James Robertson Justice, I also thought that Freddie Jones was born in Wales. I was wrong on all three counts.
He wanted to play Jack Carter and be the number one star in Get Carter so full marks to Michael Caine for playing along side and putting up with him. They were both brilliant actors in my view. Alcohol, a good servant but a terrible master.
@@kenstevens5065 Ian Hendry could have played Carter admirably - albeit entirely differently - but Michael Caine couldn't have been cast as any other male character so he probably wouldn't have been in the film at all.
His original ‘The Avengers’ showed great promise. A bit grubby. A bit Callanesque. Without him, it changed style, became slick, crap though successful. Very likeable, watchable actor.

I’ve a recollection that Hendry didn’t get on with Caine during the filming of Get Carter because he was initially offered the lead before being pushed into the lesser role when the star came along. As well as a smaller role, the pay was presumably rather less, as well as missing the name above the title kudos. I’m guessing it wasn’t Caine’s fault, as such, but Hendry perhaps found it difficult to be so committed to the film as a result.
Ian Hendry was born in my home town of Ipswich and was president of our Ipswich Appeal Theatre Group. I had the pleasure of meeting him on several occasions but he was always the under the influance of the demon that was alcohol.
it`s easy for UK actors of that era to have financial problems , although pay was certainly more than a factory worker, UK TV series/seasons are only six episodes unlike 20+ in the US and wasn't the equivalent of getting $1m per episode like Friends and Big Bang etc .
He featured in an episode of the 1970s series Thriller, where he played the part of twin brothers. One of the brothers was a successful architect, while the other was a psychopath who escaped from an institution.
I thought Ian was terrific in The Persuaders episode 'The Time and the Place' playing Lord Croxley. By the way in the Sweeney episode 'Ringer' he played the part of a villian Dave Brooker not a DI.
Vous parlez de Janet Monroe. Est-ce elle qui a joué dans un formidable film devenu introuvable (à cause de Joe Dante) "the day the earth caught fire" ?
Not many people know this but he loved to do jigsaws and was the runner up in a contest once and his prize was a years supply of pot noodles he was so pleased with his prize he was delighted
Very good presentation thanks freind ,and for me his most important acting role was in the highly rated ,avengers series I was only a young boy in the 70 s when it was going ,but it was a must see obviously it was Patrick Moore or as he was known steed ,in the show was the star but this man played a big part .
As a huge fan of the Sweeney, your blatant mistake saying he was a detective is staggering, he played a villain alongside Brian Blessed and Alan Lake. Jeez what a div
“Live now Pay Later” should have got him going and he was earmarked to play Jack Carter. However Michael Caine was given the role as they were concerned about the booze and Hendry demoted to Eric Pace. That is Mike Hodges account. Should have been really big.
Ian Henry should have had more acting roles throughout his career; it was the booze that brought him down. Such a waste of talent & what could've been.
04:00 He did NOT play the part of a Detective Inspector in The Sweeney. In fact, he played the part of the villain Dave Brroker in the first episode of the Sweeney, who at the end of the episode accidently shoots and kills the charcater of his boss, played by the excellent Brian Blessed. Also, unclear why you have included the word "Real" in your video title - I assume as partial clickbait, to imply that you have some special infomation. That he had problems in his life and with his health is readily known, e.g. from Wikipedia.
Sorry - but from which brand of cereal box did you obtain the information for this abysmal video? It is littered with inaccuracies and is an INSULT to Ian Hendry. Do the research and CHECK your facts.....or why even bother?
Ian was part of a group of actors to include Peter O ‘Toole, Richard Harris, Michael Caine, Richard Burton, Oliver Reed and Sean Connery. He died too young. When he was married to Janet Munro I think they tried to outdo each other in the alcohol stakes. I ❤all the films Ian appeared in but at the top is THE HILL released in 1965. Why the top? Well my late father spent 2 years out in Libya in National Service1952-1954 My father said that the character Ian played was spot on 🏴🏴🏴❤️❤️😍🙏🙏

He never played a police officer in The Sweeney. He played a gangster in the first episode.
Tax was too high on high earners back then. You have a good year and you'd be taxed to the hilt, then a not so good year.
Ian Hendry was born in my home town of Ipswich and was president of our Ipswich Appeal Theatre Group. I had the pleasure of meeting him on several occasions but he was always the under the influance of the demon that was alcohol.
I wrote Ian's biography, Send in the Clowns. Still highly reviewed on Amazon.
At it again . Getting fundamental things wrong. Fo you sctually do ANY research?
it`s easy for UK actors of that era to have financial problems , although pay was certainly more than a factory worker, UK TV series/seasons are only six episodes unlike 20+ in the US and wasn't the equivalent of getting $1m per episode like Friends and Big Bang etc .
Ian's third wife was Sandy. By all accounts she was loyal to him through some difficult times.
One of Britain's finest actors. Could make a mediocre scene special !
So true! Thanks for sharing your thoughts. What other types of video would you like to see on our channel?
A talent for acting but no talent for life RIP ..no memory's 🤔
Well said, we strongly concur! Thank you for watching our content and for sharing your thoughts. What other types of video would you like to see?
'No talent for life', really ?
Can this channel get any more things wrong about people in its AI videos? Lol
Wrong attribute for The Sweeney. Hendry played a thug not a D.I. Get your facts right or your channel becomes rubbish!
He was also in the TV series The Lotus Eaters.
MONEY, well you can't take it with you😢😢😢
🤔 Really ?. Well I am still going to try !. Why don't you tell that to the greedy evil 😈 Tax-man................
R.I.P Ian !
He featured in an episode of the 1970s series Thriller, where he played the part of twin brothers.
One of the brothers was a successful architect, while the other was a psychopath who escaped from an institution.
The Lotus Eaters TV series.
I thought Ian was terrific in The Persuaders episode 'The Time and the Place' playing Lord Croxley. By the way in the Sweeney episode 'Ringer' he played the part of a villian Dave Brooker not a DI.
Vous parlez de Janet Monroe.
Est-ce elle qui a joué dans un
formidable film devenu introuvable (à cause de Joe Dante) "the day the earth caught fire" ?
Un film avec Edward Judd et Leo McKern
One of my favourite films!
He was very convincing in Get Carter. Very versatile actor although not a star personality. Sad that he died so young.
Fantastic in the BBC The Lotus Eaters. One of my favourite dramas
Not many people know this but he loved to do jigsaws and was the runner up in a contest once and his prize was a years supply of pot noodles he was so pleased with his prize he was delighted
Ian died 1984.
His get carter character was brilliant, Caine I thought was wooden as carter but helped out by a great script and cast
He was in the original Avengers tv show.
Very good presentation thanks freind ,and for me his most important acting role was in the highly rated ,avengers series I was only a young boy in the 70 s when it was going ,but it was a must see obviously it was Patrick Moore or as he was known steed ,in the show was the star but this man played a big part .
Was that not Patrick Macnee?
Yes it was patrick macnee
Patrick Moore was the astronomer, I believe.
@@rachelrogers7064 yes got you thanks 👍
@@saphia7 yes got you with that thanks 🤝
As a huge fan of the Sweeney, your blatant mistake saying he was a detective is staggering, he played a villain alongside Brian Blessed and Alan Lake. Jeez what a div
“Live now Pay Later” should have got him going and he was earmarked to play Jack Carter. However Michael Caine was given the role as they were concerned about the booze and Hendry demoted to Eric Pace. That is Mike Hodges account. Should have been really big.
If you get the chance watch the TV series The Lotus Eaters!
Ian Henry should have had more acting roles throughout his career; it was the booze that brought him down.
Such a waste of talent & what could've been.
Ian played a screw in 70s UK film 'Scum' Versatile actor. RIP mate.
Janet Munro wasmyfave actress fir avery long time.
you forgot the Lotus Eaters.
Was brill actor..capt Kronos killed him.
I think he was in MCVICAR🤔.
"You couldn't win an egg an spoon race Eric"
Like him in Thriller series!
One of our favorites too, you've got fine taste! What other types of video would you like to see?
I only remember him in Get Carter ( the Michael Caine version ) . Very unusual for an actor to keep their real name !
Is it ? Lots of actors/actresses use their real names.
@@simonlevett4776 Name one !
@@simonlevett4776 Name one then !! Bruce Dern is the only other one l can think of !
@@simonlevett4776 Henry Fonda !

Shame ..I was young watching his acting in the Sweeney etc ...great voice too ...better to live ...what may it bring ...RIP
Sorry - but from which brand of cereal box did you obtain the information for this abysmal video? It is littered with inaccuracies and is an INSULT to Ian Hendry.
Do the research and CHECK your facts.....or why even bother?
He, & Michael Caine clashed during Get Carter, the fight scene, between them at the end was real.
Was the whisky real? Probably not as Ian spat most of it out!
Thanks for watching! We're glad to know that you love our video. What other types of video would you like to see on Facts Verse UK?
@@darganx Possibly cold tea?
No it wasn't.
Umm in the Sweeney he played Dave Brooker aka the Iron Man...
He reminds me of that Jason bloke.
It’s free NHS treatment in the uk including hospital and rehabilitation for alcoholics. You need to research your subject or try a different career.
Well my late father spent 2 years out in Libya in National Service1952-1954
My father said that the character Ian played was spot on
🏴🏴🏴❤️❤️😍🙏🙏
Yes The Hill was a great movie and Mr Hendry was a remarkable talent.
Great Actor and as well as the Avengers another huge hit on British TV he was lead actor in was The Lotus Eaters.
A great actor and another one done in by the booze.
Sad but true. May Ian find peace 😥
