This point is where we learn that Ned is actually the fastest gunslinger in the west. The German learned to be fast by copying Ned, he even carries his gun which leads to some cowboy making fun of it and our first gunfight. The German is fast as hell, but he eventually believes that Ned is so fast that it is impossible and is just movie tricks. During this scene they casually thank Ned for catching "Dinner". Dinner is BATS! Have you ever seen a bat fly? They have random and erratic flight patterns. They are almost impossible to shoot with a pistol, but not for Ned. Ned literally shot bats out of the sky with his PISTOL! Oh, and bats come out when it gets dark so also we should note that there was low visibility at the time. I watched this movie a hundred times as a kid but only just realized the last time I watched that they were lowkey hinting at Ned's skills. Then at the end, Ned is giving a gun way bigger and heavier than the one he usually has. He still outdraws and kills the GERMAN with it!!! Guys, Ned Nederlander is a pure gunslinger on par with Roland Deschain of Gilead.

the great thing is that still flies with this. whether it's a hallucination or not is still up in the air, and it would make sense for ned to be a fast performative shooter if he was commonly doing gunplay films, and to adapt quickly when in the thick of it like this. if we assume ned was a fast and flashy show shooter, he likely would have been shooting at spinning/moving targets, freefloating balloons, clay discs in flight, maybe shooting a playing card or a silver dollar out of the air, all skills that would have made him comfortable judging a target's speed/trajectory and shooting at fluttering and erratic targets. perfect skills for bird/bat shooting. likewise being a sport/stunt shooter, not a defense nut or a hunter, he would have moral/ethical issues with the actual purpose of his firearm when it comes down to it, which manifests in his hallucination. he's a cowboy shooter who likely got into it because of a western/"cowboys and indians" type of influence through wild west shows or western sensational media as a kid and as such combined with his altruistic bent has the fantasy of the white hat wearing hero gunning down the dirty bandits and saving the day, but is hesitant of the deadly reality of that fantasy, and if unaware he's hallucinating and thereby mistaking his hallucination for reality, would act accordingly.

But I like the theory. I just watched it the other day and was trying to make sense of the musical number of talking animals, the singing bush and invisible guy, Ned's impossibly short landing, and where the hell all the guns came from at the end of the movie. Maybe the plane had an extra crate of guns in them??? The movie raises a plethora of questions.

A small detail in favor of your theory: Lucky Day (Steve Martin) is shot in the arm during their first encounter with El Guapo, which would be a serious wound in the desert without medical attention. However, throughout the 3rd act, he never winces or appears injured, including when he's swinging from a rope, escaping the priests' torture chamber, or hanging from the wing of the aircraft. That makes sense if Ned's hallucinating the whole thing--Lucky's physical pain wouldn't compute.
In any case, it's a truly great comedy with legendary bits. Fun theory!

I just re watched this movie as a 51 yr old and noticed for the very first time the shift in the second half of the film. I was a teenager when this came out and a huge fan of Steve and Chevy, I also love "ridiculous" humor so maybe that's why I never noticed it before. This last time though, it really stuck out to me, I couldn't get it out of my head. Then out of nowhere this video shows up so I click it, thinking that it's going to be a "where are they now?" type video, but that's not the case at all.
Everything you pointed out goes along with everything I know to be true, especially the dreaming scenario and the desert scene, you asked who's perspective we could be seeing the story through. That part really struck a note with me, I totally agree that it might be Neds. In my dreams, if I have to pee, there is no toilet in sight. Then when I finally find one, it doesn't matter how much I go, I still have to go insanely bad. If I'm trying to get somewhere fast, somewhere miles away, the only thing I'll have to get there with is something ridiculous like a bike with only one pedal, and the brakes will be locked up. Then when it seems that I have made a little progress with that, I look back down and now it'll be a skateboard with only one wheel on the front and one wheel on the back.
So this theory really makes total sense to me, I couldn't agree more with everything you hit on. This movie has been, and probably always will be my favorite comedy, I love everything about it, but with this theory bouncing around in my head, I think I might just like the movie a little more now.

Never heard eating bats would do that, but back in the mid-1970s I had this particular acid trip. I had a old hound dog Buck, vividly recall he walked on his hind-legs wearing my boots and he stepped into my room. He was raising hell about the canned dog food threatening me with ass kicking because I had bought it instead of his usual dry-food. Needless to say your mind can do some really bizarre things on the right fuel, never bought canned dog food again.

Not a fan of "it was just a dream" theories, but in this case it sounds funny. It could have been a mix of hallucinations and reality as The Amigos didn't know about the german and his associates or that they were quickdraw experts. If they were part of Ned's dream imagination it could mean that Ned is some kind of psychic. My theory is that the Amigos live in the parody universe, the same where the Airplane, Hot Shots, Top Secret and Naked Gun are set.

  • @evanrayswenson

One BIG flaw, rabies has a long incubation period. They wouldn’t have started noticing somethings wrong until a either a day or a year later.

    • @andrerobatino6298
      @andrerobatino6298 Год назад +4

From what I've read, the shortest documented incubation period is 4 days, and is usually between 20 and 90 days. Not to mention getting rabies by eating an infected animal (instead of being bitten) is extremely rare. More likely the writers decided to go in a different direction at that point and didn't have time to rewrite what they already had.

The backdrop during the bat eating, campfire scene is very obviously a painted backdrop. It looks like the kind of cheap prop they would have used on a studio set during the silent movie era. Considering the three Amigo's professional background and the fact they'd likely have never spent time in a Mexican desert, their point of reference for what a Mexican desert might look like may very well not extend beyond painted backdrops, like the one featured in this scene. This lends more weight to the dead or dreaming theory.

That would explain all the massive plot holes, and the simple terribleness of the entire franchise.

That would explain the silliness of the second half of the movie. However, they never met the german (prior to "dying) nor would have known that there were 2 other germans with him to coincide with the actual story.
I remember as a kid thinking the first half of the movie being too slow paced and a bit boring so i would fast forward to the second half. But after watching your video it does make it more interesting to watch lol

I mean you're not _wrong,_ but the real question is how much of this was actually intentional on the part of the filmmakers.

An interesting theory painstakingly explained, but I doubt this super downer scenario was what intended. I would have liked to understood where this all went wrong in the actual production process, why the comic sensibility changed so drastically.

Big Question, Wouldn't the Cooked Bats Kill the Rabies Virus before they consumed them.

These were very clean bats, tasting remarkably like bacon.

  • @rhunter42dragon

But wasn't some of the supernatural stuff (such as the singing bush and the invisible guy) mentioned by the villagers BEFORE they ate the bats? Did the villagers somehow have rabies too. Also, given how overcooked those bats appear to be, the rabies would probably be destroyed.
