Now, I'm a pussy when it comes to horror. It's one the reasons I love watching these with NM instead of by myself, but holy shit. During this whole thing, I was covering my eyes and screaming out loud "HATE IT! I HATE IT!"
Yeah, this one didn’t really sell me, but the creator definitely has potential. First of all, I absolutely adore the monster designs and premises. I love when creators get weird with their designs so this is super up my alley. Excellent use of the uncanny valley. The big thing that really prevented me from being sold is how snappy it is for lack of a better term. A key part of horror is the atmosphere, a jumpscare only truly works if it has enough buildup. Yet the ending to this horror series is a couple seconds of buildup straight into a 1-2 second jumpscare and to me the buildup is not enough for me to get invested. This felt more like a 15 minute long RUclips short with the many jumpcuts and no real time to rest and soak in the horror. I guess what I am trying to say is keep in mind the medium you are making the horror for. Horror styled in a way that is intended for shortform intervals doesn’t necessarily convert well to longform format and vice versa.
Full agree! That's really what was missing here: Spencer's understandings of horror build-up gained in his shortform work delivered in longform. If he can bring that to the table on the next round, I think he'll have a breakout we can cheer on, especially with his creature creation ability.
Ok, love ya, Nick, but as an official old person, *Gen Xer, and somebody that came from a cop family, I would like to say that one, I think what they are trying to simulate is the effect you got when filmed a CRT with the old Video cameras, which would cause rolling lines to appear. And B) back in the 80s, cops started filming crime scenes, and if there was any chance that the tape might be used later for training, they would block out eyes, or blur faces, on copies that might be seen by people not directly involved in the case or trial. Then again, the last bit I mentioned might just have been a southern thing, but I don't really think so
I think being shirtless heightens the, uh, analyzing uhm, stuff and uh things uh huh mmhmm sure. So how many channel points to platonically face plant into the chest fluff? (as a late 90's early 00's kid, I agree with the PLEASE. DIGITAL HORROR. THERE'S SO MUCH THAT CAN BE DONE WITH IT. I've enjoyed analogue horror but I agree, I want to see it evolve now.)
(The heart is for the parentheses, I swear. The thumbs-up is for your feedback on the first comment, though technology made need to advance very rapidly for that.)
I love Spencer Lackey's content ^_^ every time he shows up on my TikTok fyp I get excited because I know I'm in for a good bite-sized scare. The thing I love about his creature design is that it doesn't just feel like "took a pic, slapped a filter". There's actual care and thought behind it.
I've already watched the stream but I do love rewatching it in a more concise form that takes out all the fat and just leaves the good parts, glad to hear that the vods will come out faster now that you've gotten some extra hands working on editing these down!
Possibly the text changing could delineate who is writing the annotations, ie: the fuzzy pink is victor (first person), the clear text seems to be police/third party. Not necessarily forgetting cohesion, but actually adding to it and expanding who all is part of this series?
True, but the beginning text was from the perspective of the authority who had the evidence, I believe? The idea of who's presenting this from the start altogether is a bit murky.
@@NickNocturneAL you definitely have good point. My brain made the distinction because right before the more focused text was the flash of the police content warning. So I automatically made that association.
does anyone remember that old RUclips video with like a thousand hands spawning all over a bedroom? and then forming a demon out of hands? Lackey kinda reminds me of that vibe
First of all, hello and congrats to a certain blue devil for your editor! Nice to see you get recognition! Second: Are you sure you wanna turn those redeems off for night mind? I mean... I'm just saying... 😳
You may be just saying, but I'm trying to have viewers pay attention to what I'm saying when I'm saying it. ::P So, might be better to not have distractions.
I remember these shorts! They're pretty great, if a bit repetitive at times since they all follow a similar structure. I do find them great as background footage though...
Something about this series and the delivery kinda feels like a bit of a fast paced skinamarink. The setting when it's just Victor's recordings feels weirdly surreal and demonic at the same time and the police report and news report feels like it's meant as a break from those illusions Victor is having
Here are some of my ideas on this project; I think he was going for more of a storytelling type series instead of just horror. I think horror was definitely a main key point in it, but he had a story for it he wanted to tell, instead of just the jumpscares. Im pretty sure the orange name was based off of asmodeous(this will go along w my theory of the story). I think he was in a relationship w this person, but they arent a person. They are some sort of demon or smthing. I think that they either killed vincents family, or most likely, kinda made him subconsciously?? Whether through possession, or just making him go insane. I think he just doesnt remember. This could explaine why his "nughtmare" that woke him up was an actual video, and why there was still coffee on the counter when everyone was dead. He did it, but blacks out while doing it. I also think the orange name(asmodiosu person) can manipulate tech. This could explaine how vincents dead brother was in his vid before he was even dead, and how the 'self portraite' video got on his camcorder if he never took it. I also think that the demon targets people who are seeking love. Given their name. They do this, and do stuff like what happened with vincent. Also, them manipulating tech would explaine the 'coming back' videos of the dead family members. I also think the reason he kept putting off calling the police was because deep down, he knew he had killed them. Thats also why he hadnt checked the basement for them at all, or opened his brothers door. He couldnt come to terms with what he had done.
I like how the scary faces in the shorts don't have audio stingers, since they don't need them. To paraphrase MandaloreGaming, most jumpscares only briefly tickle the part of your brain that says "watch out for tigers", while these silent terrifying faces instead tickle the part of your brain that says "THIS IS THE FACE OF A TIGER: REMEMBER IT FOR LATER", even if there probably ain't gonna be a "later" for the guy in these shorts. Also, there's a part in this stream that would tickle a very different part of your brain's tiger-department; specifically, the part that says "THE TIGER IS SHIRTLESS AND SMILING AT YOU", which would probably scare Mandy quite a bit. As an aside, Mandy kinda lived his own little unfiction horror miniseries during the Witch Incident, which you can learn about by listening to the PST episode "VVeezer". You also get to hear about the PST gang's experience with the insane "Clue House" AirBnB in Chicago, as they rallied to travel to Brendaniel's wedding. Even if you're not normally into the wild antics of the PST gang, VVeezer felt like a glimpse into an unfiction project, and it makes the drumming from the start of "The Puzzle Box" feel all the more ominous when you know what it leads to. Apparently ShammyTV also had her own little haunting incident later on, as she was living in the same apartment complex as Mandy at the time, and was in the minivan when the witch tried to trick the PST adventuring party with a fake Kum & Go.
@@NickNocturneAL Oh man, that's a bummer. Still, I feel like the point stands. Taking away the stingers, or them not being there in the first place, kinda amplified the scare factor of those faces. It's like if you're in a forest full of the sounds of nature, only for them all to go quiet. That sudden absence tickles the "watch out for tigers" part of the brain more effectively than a sudden loud noise, at least from my perspective. Hell, if anything the sudden absence PRIMES us better than just suddenly startling us out of nowhere.
Oh my goodness nick this is so creepy im not normally one for these videos but here i am nearly 10 at night watching it with you the only way i can is if im not alone do you think hes in a time loop?
16:59 maybe it’s just my tastes, but I think I would’ve enjoyed it more if we just had these shots without text. Closed Door, phone, coffee, basement noises, etc with zero text. It’d give a chance for the atmosphere to breathe. It’s depicting an empty still world. THEN there should be corresponding text, in the description or a link site/document. Editing the two together leaves me focused on the narrative, which hurts the ambience (which I think is very good). Give me context LATER, let me sit with these images and feelings. I also think it’d make it look like more of an unfinished documentary
19:06 the way Nick emphasises the sentence "That's my best friend! I tell them everything! Hahahaha!" with the wobbling is just so fucking adorable. EDIT: Also, to me it looked like the recordings of the AIM chat were literally just laddie pointing his camcorder at the monitor, but he didn't add the flickering due to CRT monitor refresh rate.
Ive watched his content develop over the past like 3ish years i believe? His stuff has improved a whole lot. From using lighting to utilize the same like 5 spots in the house without it looking the exact same every time, to occasionslly experimenting with wonderful new spots , both additions of new monsters and variations of the same mons that keep the new stuff pretty fresh. Sound effects are improving and Spencer is beginning to move past using cookie cutter, derivative pacings and frames. These improvements were previously small weaknesses that kept me from fully enjoying his work, and his pacings arent as derivative as they once were and there is loads of other progress as well so. I still find myself being overly critical of his work, like i am with most horror nowdays because of the standards ive built having been watching horror since i was 9 y/o in 2006 (and writing amateur horror since i was like 16) . I still find that the pacing can be a bit too derivative for my tastes, and sometimes i see the same variant of the same monster in the same rooms at the same angle too many times in a row. But much greater in sum than these small criticisms. Mind you, these stupidly high standards of mine also apply to myself. I havent been able to officially release a single piece of my poetry, lyrics, piano tunes, music lyrics, or literature. I am constnstly criticizing myself to the point that i am too shameful to show anyone my work. Spencer does what i so desperately need to do. He has a moderate, realistic standard and expectation for his own work. Hes confident enough to get himself out there amd continue to post his stuff for the world to judge despite outside criticism. Hes not letting any of his inital obstacles lighting/enviros/monsters/pacing/variety discourage or slow his progress. Initially when i first discovered him i thought he was trash. But then i encountered the same problem with lots of modern horror. slowly I realized that his horror is designed to appeal to Gen z and alpha, not the millenials. This man has is wonderful and has many strengths and a passion that everyone would benefit from seeing. This dude is going to do absolutely amazing things with his future. Guess im just too resistant to changing over to videos that are less than a minute each, im really not fond of the changes from 15+ minute creations. But time crawls ever onward as do the developments of social and creative spaces. So not trying to throw in a self plug in a comment about a wonder of modern horror, but. Im going to be working on a narration of a story that ill be editing and finishing the ending of. My friend was a professional writer for years and eventually he had a mental breakdown as many of us artists do, and he burned every manuscript and book + digitally deleted every single thing he wrote. I have to read this story through wayback machine because his site has been deleted for years. Any chance youd like to check out the story? "Technically" lost media that i will be spinning but not in the scary sense of lost media. I can send you a transcript once I finish reading all of it, or I can send you the wayback machine link for you to sift through yourself! He also has a variety of other stories on there, a few of which my old friends , who i helped run a horror Facebook page like 10 years ago under said writer friend, wrote themselves!
Much as we'd like to step into the world with perfect creations, it would truly defeat the journey and take away so much of the beauty of our growth. To try perfecting again and again and again in solitude, never to release it, is far more tragic than to put out something at 80% quality. And that 80% (or whatever it may be) would still be 105% in someone's heart. My original videos have so many flaws--and I got a career I love and creators I've been able to lift up for years because I made them, even knowing I wasn't a professional back then. All of unfiction is like this. Come, release out your work, join us. ::3 As for your friend--are they in a position in which sharing stuff like this from the wayback machine is something they're opposed to? Admittedly, I'm a bit interested, but after that kind of destruction (and I too see such loss in that), it's best to mind what they feel about it.
@NickNocturneAL Oh my GOSH you are one of my biggest idols I can't believe you responded T_T and with some of the best advice of my life to boot! My friend is gonna be so excited!!! My friend , AP, is completely happy with me narrating, editing, and writing an ending to his story. I asked him several years after the destruction (about 3 years ago I believe) and his regret had already set in deeply by this point. He was more than happy to let me do what I want with it, but I will be running all narrations, edits, and additions by him despite him saying this was unnecessary. I just would be very uncomfortable releasing someone else's work with my own alterations without getting the thumbs up first. I recorded two chapters 2 years ago (no edits yet) but I have been so depressed and downtrodden by life that I just haven't had the confidence to do it. Even just your interest in the work makes me so happy and I have no doubt he'll be ecstatic as well!! I am not comfortable sharing the link here in comments as it's not my work and I don't want someone else stealing it from AP, but do you respond to any of your socials? If not an email or somethin would be neat! I'll send my RUclips name in the email with the link! I would be happy to show you my narrations once I get a fair amount of practice done :D
@@NickNocturneALHey there! I emailed you the wayback link. I know you're a wicked busy person so take your time. Just wanted to let you know because I bet you get a dumb amount of fanmail

"used to ask a/s/l which is a good policy" w what. they really aren't teaching the kids these days to never share any kind of identifying information these days, are they. share ur sex I'm iffy on but fine, share ur actual name, no, fuck u Facebook, myspace at least didn't encourage ur real name but share ur LOCATION??? how easy do u want ppl whose intentions u have no way of knowing to find u these days? kids! stop sharing ur every personal detail with complete strangers publicly! internet safety 101! I'm stressed out for these kids' well being!
Tbf, the known lingo at the time was a brief version of it, so you would just say age as a number, whether you are m or f, and a generalised area. For example, 19/f/UK or 18/m/Fr.
@@V3xxe which is better than the in depth analysis kids these days are giving, but ppl on the internet REALLY don't need ur info. why does some rando need to know ur gender? why do they need ur country or age? unless ur trying to say it's legal for u to look at smut, no one needs to know that shit. it's not like it can't be a feckin lie, anyway.
@@firesighnavatar3283 Because they might be interested romantically or more intimately in who they are talking to, or just used as general question. It may surprise you, but that is how people made friends or even close partners through chat room anonymity. As lets say you're into computers in the 90s, your not going to find most people you know in real life to be on some computer, like any siblings or parents. Most people back then viewed the internet as optional in the 90s and for the most part, it was. As the people who were interested in computer related stuff were mostly tech-savvy nerds. It is not me saying people can't catfish or be malicious, but it was a far smaller pool of people on the internet then than today.
I love ASL, but the shorts just annoyed me. Every day, a thumbnail of the same exact face with the same exact big eyes filter put over it. Maybe with a white wig one day, maybe a black one the next day. Every video 20 seconds of nothing followed by a close up of the weird face.

As for your friend--are they in a position in which sharing stuff like this from the wayback machine is something they're opposed to?
Just wanted to let you know because I bet you get a dumb amount of fanmail
its so insane this is in new jersey like i know where they're talking about that creature needs to get OUT of here
I might be mistaken but I'm p sure the spooky audio from the first vid was from one of the exorcisms of anneliese michel?
NM is swoll AF
Is the last name just a reference or?
For Spencer's character? Yeah, Jack Torrance from The Shining.
I though American Sign Language as to ASL...I guess that dates me; I really do not care as I am working on being a translator/intepreter for the deaf. Kind of need it....
I never knew the local smooth voice horror youtube guy was actually a bara furry...... 😳
39:23 Oh, HELLO... 👀 😍
I havent watched the channel in a long while, when did the cat thing get so buff
9 years of lifting huge videos at high volume makes you stronger.
When you asked what asl was I guessed American sign language 🤓
Is the audio glitchy for anyone else?
There's a creator on TikTok that does things like this, I can't watch them XD
Analog horror and found footage hane been linked too often, like this is more artsy found footage over analog
im old asl i thought of American sign language
doing inventory at work and put this on and :( the opening was not poggers

what. they really aren't teaching the kids these days to never share any kind of identifying information these days, are they. share ur sex I'm iffy on but fine, share ur actual name, no, fuck u Facebook, myspace at least didn't encourage ur real name but share ur LOCATION??? how easy do u want ppl whose intentions u have no way of knowing to find u these days? kids! stop sharing ur every personal detail with complete strangers publicly! internet safety 101!
