So many greats in this series. Hall of Famers Cal, Baines, Alomar, Mussina, Edgar, Griffey, A Rod, Randy Johnson. Forget anyone? Then great players like Jimmy Key, Rhodes, Surhoff, Davis, Brady, Palmeiro, Buhner, Sorrento, Moyer, Charltonn, Dennis Martinez. Very good players Bordick, Hoiles, Randy Myers, Erickson, etc. The Indians were pretty stacked that year too but the Orioles should have been the AL representative for the world series. Mussina pitched incredibly again but Benitez in the bullpen screwed him & the O's twice. In hindsight Alan Mills, Arthut Rhodes, Jesse Orosco or Randy Myers would have been much better late game options.
@@lupojohn21 I don't know why people say that. Number 1 he's in the hall. No. 2 he was the #1 overall pick his draft year out of a tiny town and a tiny high school on MD's eastern shore. His talent was that great. He battled injuries most of his career but kept going for nearly 20 years and ended up with over 2,800 hits.
If you were wondering why I felt having the Big Unit pitch on the Saturday before Game 1 of the ALDS was not the best idea, it would show here in this series. The Baltimore Orioles, 98-64 on the year, won the AL East and faced the power hitting Seattle Mariners. The M's hit a ML record 265 home runs in 1997 en route to a 90-72 record, winning the West by 6 games. In Game 1, the Orioles sat Surhoff, Palmeiro and Alomar against the Big Unit. No problem as it turned out. Eric Davis' two-run single in the 5th keyed a 3-run inning as Johnson fell to Mike Mussina and the Orioles, 9-3. Then, in Game 2, Jamie Moyer was cruising, leading 2-0 in the 5th. Then, he had to leave the game to an elbow injury. The bullpen, which had blown 27 saves this year, was called on, and they bombed again. Baltimore won by the same score as the game before, 9-3. Back in Baltimore for Game 3, Jeff Fassero pitched 8 shutout innings for the M's. Jay Buhner and Paul Sorrento went back-to-back in the 9th, and good thing. The O's scored twice in the bottom half and the M's stayed alive with a 4-2 decision. But in Game 4, Mussina outpitched Johnson once again. And Jeff Reboulet's HR in the 2nd was the key in a 3-1 Orioles' triumph, and the Orioles won the series three games to one. The Mariners were going home as the Birds would play in their second straight ALCS.
@@snakesupreme Not quite, though the Mariners did trail the Tribe 2-1 in games in the ALDS, and were down 1-0 in the 7th inning of Game 4. Then, Ichiro and the M's rallied to win Games 4 and 5 to escape. It was the ALCS where the M's faltered, losing in 5 to--who else--the Yankees.
@@nflmlbclassics Its a damn shame that Colon, who was great in game 1 against the Mariners in the 2001 ALDS, could not hold on to that lead in game 4. It would have been Yankees-Cleveland part 3.

Right up there w/ the 90’s Bills as the greatest collection of talent to never win a title Shame
@FriesFrom 1969 to 1997, that was the most idiotic thing baseball did, in that homefield was just basically randomly determined, so the team with the best record (unless its a wild card team) was not guaranteed to have one more home game than the other team, including having to play the decisive game 5 or game 7 on the road. With that said, I did like the 2-3 format in best of five series with 1997 being the final year it was done (which baseball brought it back again for just the 2012 division series).
@Fries Matchups would have been the same since you forgot to mention that MLB also had a rule that two teams from the same division couldn't play in the LDS.
And if the series came down to a battle of the bullpens, the Orioles would've sent the Mariners to the dry cleaners Baltimore blew only 10 saves all year while the M's blew 27, and they allowed the most 9th inning runs in history.
Mariners were never able to build a strong rotation good enough to beat potent offenses like Cleveland and Baltimore. They did beat the 1995 Yanks but that series was an all-out slugfest.
They were up 2-1 against Cleveland in the 95 ALCS, and I really thought that they were gonna win game 5, with games 6-7 at home. They let 95 get away. 97 Baltimore was just too elite, its surprising how they just choked against Cleveland in the ALCS.
Considering that the O's and Mariners had the two best records for division winners in the AL, why were they even playing each other in the Division Series? Even with Yanks being the WC, it should have been the #1 seed O's playing the #3 Indians and the #2 Mariners playing the WC Yankees. The NL playoffs had the proper seeding, so why not the AL?
The Mariners basically handed a free one to the Orioles, who really didn't do anything to deserve winning. In game four Johnson should have just started beaning everyone.
Thank goodness for these old clips as I won't be watching MLB in 2022.
Mussina was the man in the 97 postseason. Shame we didnt get to see him in the 97 WS for at least 1-3 more starts.
That pitch from Johnson at 6:52 is a strike seven days a week and twice on Sundays. Insane.

Im really surprised Mussina started game 4 on short rest, with game 5 being played in Baltimore, and Baltimore up 2-1. But hey, it worked out great.
The 97 Mariners tried to out-Oriole the Orioles (i.e. the longball). But the 1997 Orioles had a better rotation/bullpen than the 1996 Orioles.
