Sara, as always great advise. And for everyone watching, please note the part about knock-off, cheep thread. I’ve never understood the griping over good quality thread and it’s cost, and you’re selling on a $20,000 high end sewing machine. Please take the advice and use good quality thread. I do and I truly never have issues unless I have forgot to change my needle to the correct size for a project. Again, Sara as always, thank you. Jon
I greatly appreciate this video. I’m new to sewing, but I have a mint vintage 53 year old machine in perfect working order. Not having an elder to help teach me, videos like this have been a tremendous help when problems arise. Thank you
Thank you so so much I was so stressed out until I heard you say, make sure the bobbin is matching the bobbin holder, “ metal to metal or plastic to plastic.. I had plastic bobbin in a metal holder 🤦🏽♀️ I did it the right way and now I’m stress free that’s to you I LOVE YOUUUU❤️ peace and blessings
Thank you so much. The machine had just returned from being serviced so we couldn't imagine what could be wrong. Found your video rather quickly. Backward needle was the culprit!
Hi Sara, I do enjoy your videos and sharing of knowledge, I have one thing I would like to add to your thread conversation and that is that the thread is pulled back and forth in the needle groove to form the stitch as the thread wraps over the bobbin case to pick up the lower thread in stitch formation the take up lever does this pull back and say the stitch is using 1mm of thread per stitch the upper thread is being pulled through the needle groove many times as you sew, back and forth and any problem with the needle groove can cause thread breakage or shredding.
My thread is breaking when I do the tension test with the pressure foot down. It seems to do fine when I pull on the thread if the foot is up. I rethreaded the machine and checked the bobbin. The needle is the one that the Bernina store gave me and the thread is from them as well. I watched all the videos that I can find, but nothing addresses the issue that I am having.
Super good information. I’m always in search of the “right” thread. You mentioned Isacord…what else do you recommend for quilt piecing and FMQ? I have a Pfaff QE720 and my workhorse, Pfaff 7550.
I had trouble with thread shredding at the bar just above the needle while I was FMQ. Turns out that the top tension was set too high, and once I lowered it I had no more issues.
I have a Pfaff Quilt Expression 4.2. I also have some Superior Threads prewound bobbins. Can I use them on my Pfaff? If I can, do I leave the paper disc on the bobbin?
Hi Kay, I am not a fan of rewound bobbins. You are welcome to use them if you want but if you have any machine problems, return back to winding your own bobbins. You do need to make sure they are sized for the PFAFF machine before you use them.
Hi Sara, i had beautiful embroidery sewing machine present from my sons and daughters. Is a pfaff 4.5, I was embroidering and sewing soo well, now I can’t embroidery not sewing. The above thread gets rolled into the bobbin, I’ve change threat, cleaning the bobbins, change, re-threats the machine, and nothing. Please advise
@@HeirloomCreations hi Sarah, thank you for your prompt answer, I fix it by just changing the needle, I watch one of your videos on why the thread brakes, saw that has to be the right needle for different threads. Thanks again, I’m swing and embroidering!!! Blessings
Sara, On the PFAFF creative ion the thread keeps breaking but only on the straight stitch. I tried everything you said in your video and still would not fix the issue. After several technicians serviced the machine no one could fix it. Most of them said they had no issue. But one has to use the straight stitch for a few minutes and then it breaks or sometimes it breaks after 20-30 seconds. Then one technician from OOT said over the phone try the tension adjustment, so the default is 4.6 on the straight stitch when lower to 4.4 it does not break. Can you explain why or someone in your shop would they know?
Aurifil thread new thread and not sure of the needle but probably the universal but only guessing. Again it only breaks when using the straight stitch. Any thoughts?
I don't throw away old thread; you can put it in a designated spot to wind on your bobbin for bobbin work (decorative sewing from the back to do thread painting.)

Thank you so much for the big needle. I had no idea about groove.

Omg!!!! I switched the threads and it works fine!! Thank you! I almost gave up on sewing 😊

Great extra tip! Thanks for sharing! Happy sewing Brett
Thanks this helped me fix it!!
you are welcome!
Thank u for your information it will help me
On my machine, the thread breaks any time I try to back stitch. What can I do to correct that?
Another good lesson on thread, needles and breakage. Thanks
You are welcome!
I've seen needles (including legit Singer!) where the eye is really rough and was straight up cutting the thread itself.
Thank you great work !
Hello, I just got a Husqvarna Jade 20. What's the best thread for denim?
Great video
Great video, Sarah! I like to do edge-to-edge quilting using my embroidery unit. Do you also recommend Isacord thread for that? Thanks!
Yes, I often reach for Isacord for all my machine/embroidery free motion quiltings.
My thread is breaking when I do the tension test with the pressure foot down. It seems to do fine when I pull on the thread if the foot is up. I rethreaded the machine and checked the bobbin. Wonderful! Thank you, Sara!
Glad you enjoyed it!

We love Mettler, Aurifil and gutermann.
My sewinh machine is aYamata Fy8700 i was seing find went start breaking the thread what i can do.
How long can you keep thread? I have thread that is about 15 years old. How can I test it to see if it's good to use on a project?
It all depends if it is a good quality thread or not. 15 years old is not very old if it is kept out of sunlight and in a drawer away from dust.
I had trouble with thread shredding at the bar just above the needle while I was FMQ. Turns out that the top tension was set too high, and once I lowered it I had no more issues.
thanks for sharing!
Ive got a brand new janome 740dc machine it works great

Hi Olivia, I would recommend having your local Pfaff service person take a look at it for you

Aurifil thread new thread and not sure of the needle but probably the universal but only guessing.
