It is called «Russian variation» because it was introduced by strong russian grandmaster Ragozin and then it was played by many other strong russian grandmasters and world champions(you may have heard of him due to «Ragozin Defence» in the Queen’s Gambit Declined).
I always thought it was the Smyslov variation.
@@tonylove4800 This is the first game ever played featuring this variation: www.chessgames.com/perl/chessgame?gid=1283532
And it was Ragozin's game.
This guy knows Russian chess
Thank you for your vast knowledge
thank you for increasing my knowledge
I just love Agad flexing his king pendrive while asking us to pause the video and find the move.
Has anybody found a flash drive like that online yet ??
a subtle king flex, a line never discovered before
i mean, that is a very cool pendrive. ;)
that's definitely a new move in the position
Ya i found
And it was in this position that we have a completely new Grünfeld
Gad!
sorry about that
I just love the Loyalty MVL shows for his openings
Agadmator: "Have an excellent rest of your day".
Two hours later: "Hello everyone!"
I always found the Grünfeld to be an aesthetically pleasing defense and this variation really takes it up a notch.
"Everyone Will Play the Grünfeld After Seeing This!"
MVL: Oh no my Grünfeld!
Magnus: Sorry about that!
Agadmator: everyone will play the Grünfeld after seeing this
Everyone: sorry about that :))
I only know two openings (one with white and one with black). Probably will never learn others, so Grunfeld is never happening
Yeah, I mean, what if the opponent doesn't make thise crucial moves that allowed this attack? Also the resulting lines were extremely complicated with lots of pieces hanging, regular guys like us wouldn't be able to convert any of this.
Grünfeld is too complicated for my less than vast knowledge
Me: still trying to get this inside joke about “sorry about that”
@@Philipp5292 I could tell you but then it would be an outside joke, lol
I have shown this video to my friends at bar or library. They will definitely play it!
I'm watching your videos all day man. I'm finding here. Relieves me of my depression for being left behind and broke, when I used to be the best.
1. Your Pawn Moving Sound is Excellent
2. Your hypothetical Imagaination is awesome
3. Your English Pronounciation at Good Levels
4. and Handsome Guy
Congratulations on your first million, brother! .... You really deserve it!
And it was in this position anonymousSWE poured up another cup of coffee and enjoyed 14 minutes of top level chess.
Really enjoyed the match, thanks :)
i fall in love with the grunfeld the first time i saw it, this makes me love it even more! i want to be good enough to play the grunfeld
I love this keep it up bro!
I've loved the Gruenfeld since I first saw it, in a book, played by Fischer. I've won a few really nice games on the black side including a couple of destructive attacks but have also been crushed by the white center. It's not for everyone but it has solid pawn structure, active piece play and plenty of tactical opportunities down the long diagonal.
Chess is for everyone. Learn as you go. Fischer only liked 1.e4 for a long time. His opponent resigned after Fischer played 1. c4.
Love your channel best stress buster for me😅❤
A totally brilliant game, by both players, thanks
Thank you for sharing this game ! Exciting and very nice to see a beautiful game by MVL !
Go MVL ! 🤗
Beautiful! Absolutely beautiful
Antônio, every tutorial is worthy. Little by little, you'll have an envious library in a unique playlist. Who wouldnt want It?
This is a very instructive game because most Grünfeld players find the Russian System to be the most troubling variation ... even more of a pain than the Exchange Variation. What a wild game!!
i enjoyed it so much, i was reminded of Marshall attack against paul morphy
1:10 You are right about the naming of the Russian variation and system. It gained the name after being frequented by Russian players, which becomes apparent when looking at a database of games featuring it.
What a game!!
Agadmator just analysed the game and enjoyed it, and made a movie out of it for us to enjoy even more.
I have always thought it was called the Russian variation because Botvinnuk played it several times against Symslov and in a famous game against Fischer.
Easiest pause the video moment for a QP player like myself. Awesome recap as usual.
Maxime and his Grünfeld reminds me of Kevin Costner in Tin Cup, hitting the ball into the water time and time again until the very last attempt :)
I love the Grunfeld as Black.
@Peter Mortensen Why would I edit my comment?
@Peter Mortensen you didnt get it
Damn....... I kinda don't care
Happy 1million subscriber agadmator
Splendid attack. MVL had Levon back on his heels nearly the entire game.
The Russian Variations (4 Nf3 Bg7 5 Qb3)have become a popular weapon against the Grünfeld Defence. when Anatoly Karpov used it very successfully in the 1986 World Championship match, when all other methods were failing to achieve an advantage against Kasparov's stubborn resistance. In this substantial revision of his 1985 book, just for adding to your vast knowledge
Thanks!
As a lover of chess, I'm absolutely grateful for this channel
In description you have written semis but it is quarterfinal game 2
Wow man Maxime plays for win with black and draw with white.
He's really the strongest intuitive player and best player in richest opening lines of chess i.e. najdorf and grunfeld
Shubhendra Nath Singh yep.
I will definitely tell my friends at the library about this opening
*Title:* "Everyone Will Play the Grünfeld After seeing this!"
*MVL:* :D
Grünfeld is such a fun and sharp opening to play
I like this Grunfeld defence!!!
I keep seeing the winning moves i feel blessed
Loving the pendrive flex
I love this opening
6:49 "As you can see the bishop pair is fully operational" even Agadmator couldn't say it without smiling
I'm gonna start saying, today Antonio the old bastard put a video and im happy :) and somehow it still makes perfect sense
I will try to play the Grunfeld next time I'm at the bar or perhaps the library.
The game of the century: Am I a joke to you?
Ah yes
my mood rn: hello everyone
also my mood: sorry about that
Perfectly timed with food time
Welcome back Maxime
and it was in this position that i learned it's a grünfeld not a groomfeld
congratulations agadmator to reach 1million subscibers
Amazing game!
Where can I watch these games LIVE???
Wow, amazing game
"The most powerful weapon in Chess is to have the next move" (David Bonstein) ... unless you are in zugzwang ;)
I've stepped in a pile of zugzwang while playing chess once. I didn't like it.
Simple earthy experience with great chess lessons....that's Agadmator for you!!♥️
the knight on the edge is known as "Cavalier MVL" for us french
Hello Antonio! I know there is a lot of chess going on right now but if you get a chance in the future do you think you can find a Tal game to celebrate your 1 million subs?
#suggestion ☝️😎
MVL was waiting for this moment in his whole life
This was played up to move 12 on 2020.10.12 by Drenchev vs Ivic.
I definitely encounter the Russian system against the Grünfeld often enough to study this! Looks like fun :)
That was great
His videos are immortal by itself.
the more i watch antonio's chessgame analyses the more i understand that pawn-grabbers and all-in-tact-keepers usually don't end well in chess.

Botvinnik used to play the Qb3 variation. I thought it was named after him.
Brilliant attack
The last time I was this early, there was still plenty ado.
@9:59 MVL misses going directly for Kc3, surprised it's not mentioned, as this is clearly winning.
OMG that thickkkkk USB im dead Agad 8:25
5:52 why not block check with Bd2 instead of Kf1 like done as previously mentioned in the variation where everything gets exchanged?
5:01 knight to A4. Both bl rook and queen are now under attack now, and D2 is defended, like the A4 horse.
Congratulations
6:52 it would be nice to explain why Rxb4 doesn't work. I figured it out after some thought, still not easy to see for many.
Antonio! Your daughter's name should be Agatha, it works well with Agad
rename channel to Agatha? hmmm
@@GeneralArmorus agathamatora sounds cool I guess
um brasileiro por aqui
I remember someone on this channel once suggest Agadmatress 😂😂😂
agathamator?
A-Gad-Mator: 0:23 --> "... anything else could happen ..." (meaning, MVL could also win in Gruenfeld)
Also A-Gad-Mator: puts a happy MVL photo on the thumbnail
It was pioneered by strong Russiann GMs. There is even Smyslov variation on move 7 if you play Bg4
"As you can see, the bishop pair is definitely fully operational." Can I have your signature to start using this? 😁
What was the highest number of moves that we had a completly new game? Anyone knows?
10:23
'Maxime is only up one pawn'.
But he's up two pawns.
Awesome
Love me some grünfeld
if the opponent attacks in the center, how should I pick which side to circumvent? or should I focus on defending the center?
I encounter the Bg5 line after d5 wayyy too often when I try the grunfeld, maybe do a video on that one
Did you make the tutorial?
Please yes . A tutorial
In the frame around your video stream, can the captured pieces appear? Such that the top bar is black with v small white captured pieces showing and the bottom bar is white with v small white captured pieces showing? Or even ditch the info corner and display captured material under each player's name - in gray scale. Perhaps in future a clock display, showing time of each move. Sorry about that!
Its called the Russian Variation/System since its has been mainly pioneered by Soviet GMs such as Symslov, Botvinnik, Karpov too played it, but mainly Symslov and Botvinnik.
EDIT: It is also called the Symslov system.

@agadmator
Hallo from Germany!
nice king usb flash drive you got there :D
: )
How these Grandmasters play so well with very little time on the clocks is beyond me. Incredible game!
plzz make the tutorial about this opening
"I don't know if it's worth it".... you have 1,000,000+ subs. It's worth it.
I need some sipping whiskey for this.
Wow haven’t been this early in years
If only I had the skill to actually do that
