Keep in mind that the QX80 he's testing is the "Limited" edition, which does have a price around $90k, and the interior design (the seats) is a bit different compared to the regular version. MSRP on a base 2019 QX80 is around $65k.
I have a 2020 QX80. I have great confidence in it since it is based on the international Nissan Patrol…on peer with Toyota Land Cruiser. Never plan on taking it off-road, but nice to know in Iowa winters or if I need to escape from Urban cultures, it will hold me in good stead cutting across rough terrain. It is a good balance of old and new tech, and above all…high reliability.
You cant compare the qx80 with the Armada because all QX80’s are loaded with the HBMC ( hidrolic body motion control) which is not available in even Platinum trims of Armada... only Nissan patrol and qx80 and the qx80 of middle east has more backup than the US models
That makes a huge difference on winding roads and also when you go offroad, for me it means kids throwing up versus not. Excellent point you make there, that hardly anyone speaks ever
The South African Q80 had a rear diff-lock. But they stopped selling Infinity's due to very poor sales. We still get the top-spec Patrol in SA, and it comes with a rear locker. And I think the Patrol is a better vehicles compared to the LC200VX...
Great job Tommy, thank you for the honest review. This QX80/Armada is in my top five for a new or barely used 2020/2021 full size suv, since I probably won’t be able to afford a Land Cruiser or LX570 and the Tahoe/Expeditions have too many issues that I’ve seen. The Sequioa or Lexus GX460 though might give the Armada/QX80 a challenge for my money. I will see soon as I intend to buy soon in 2021/2022. The GX might be too small for me and my fam damily though. Thanks again. I love TFL channels.
I used Qx80 since 2014 and many of my friends had same problem with a rear Air shacks abzorber if you replaced it by the have dutty one it will be perfect as a Nissan Patrol
9:15 you say the Germans are completely street oriented??? How wrong can you be. You've seen the GLS with it's active suspension. Or maybe you haven't? It is made to get out of tricky situations. The GLS will go a hell of a lot further than you think and is just as capable as these and the range rover. Just like you thought a Touaereg couldn't go off road you're wrong about the GLS too. Go watch some videos. Part of its development is a tough off road course including desert sand dunes. Its suspension was developed with off road in mind having the ability to rock up and down for getting out of sand. So please.
I don't see why this would be more capable than the Escalade or Navigator. What advantages does it actually have? I know it doesn't have the lockers that the overseas Patrol does, seems to me like in this form it's just another big luxury SUV.
Used these and the 2017 and newer Armada are a huge value proposition. In AZ these can be had with ~50k on the odometer for about $25k-$30k, far south of their new price tags. V8, true 4wd, 7 seats, 8500 lbs towing capacity and a decent aftermarket thanks to the Aussies. Really wish Nissan USA would pull their head out of the sand and sell a Pro 4X Armada that is just the double locked Y62 Patrol the rest of the world gets, but even in stock form with decent tires and smaller wheels 90% of what people would consider “off-roading”.
I like the QX80, but I LOVE the current Armada (cheaper, looks better). I don't like the loss of center stack switches to go to another touchscreen. Bad idea.
The point of overlanding is mpgs, though. You're not going to get very many out of either that or the Armada/Patrol, unless you don't live in the US and can get the diesel versions.
there is no diesel versions of the armada/patrol around the world, only toyota offers the land cruiser 200 and the lexus 450d with a 4.5l twin turbo diesel v8
No doubt it can handle off road use, to an extent, but the major killer for me in the interior. Nissan really needs to update their infotainment system.
Infinity is always behind in the interior tech area. They keep systems for decades and don't upgrade often, but heck it works. Reliability on engine/drive is good as these engines are amazing Q all day.
I like the fact that it`s a larger people mover that can go off-road, but the styling needs work, i.e. sharpen out those `hippo like` bulges. Have optionally available ( maybe they do! ) `sensible`tire and wheel packages that would enable more off-road freedom. If I were in the market, YES, I`d buy one! Thanks for this one Tommy.
Well done Tommy. You cover all the stuff that is on peoples mind.(mine anyhow) Even the disclaimer that the course is not set up to overly challenge the vehicle. lol

James Glenn Yea the reliability of this thing is nothing to worry about. They’ve been using the same engine since the first gen QX56 and that’s known for reliability. These trucks last.

I dont think its the best butbut damn near close for its size. I would say a g wagon or wrangler rubicon may beat it with front and rear diff lockers and geound clearance. But this is damn sure more reliable and crawl control almost makes up for the missing diff lockers
I concede the midsize part. But if you remove reliability from the equation, the wolkswagon Touareg not sure if they still make it but came with height adjustment to 13inch ground clearance and had available 3 locking differentials as the tfl people had pointed out in their tough t series. Would i take that over an lc200 or lc100 or for that matter any lc or its lexus counterpart no i wouldnt. So you win.😍
