      You are right.

    • @absurdengineering
      @absurdengineering 2 года назад +1

      @@marinellovragovic1207 “Not just a theory”… That’s theory in the mathematic sense: a way of describing stuff. That’s what mathematical theories are - abstract ways to describe “stuff”. The mathematical proofs use various theories together to make a logical argument. The crux of Fourier’s idea was that orthogonal functions are basis vectors in the space of functions. Any function in a linear function space can be equivalently described using a linear combination of other, basis functions in that same space. The basis functions don’t have to be sines. They can be wavelets and a lot of other shapes, and dimensionalities too. The idea extends beyond functions, to function-like objects like higher order functions, and so on. It’s pretty useful (an understatement), and thanks to it we got jpeg and compressed video - that are all built on transforms that work just like the Fourier transform, just with different basis vectors and applying to slightly more specialized function spaces :) I’d say that if there is one thing a “lay person” should know about linear algebra is the concept of basis vectors and linear spaces. It comes up all the time in other disciplines that use math to describe stuff.
