Ovingham Crossing: June 2022

The Torrens Road bridge over the Gawler and ARTC lines opened on 18 June 2022. In this video we take our first drive over the bridge and see how the project has progressed since our last update in December.

Not many drivers seem to realise that the westbound lane over the bridge is open. At 0:23 there's a ute with a flashing arrow directing traffic to use the right-turning lanes, then at 0:26 you have to make a lane change across continuous white lines to get onto the bridge instead of turning right into Churchill Road. The Driver's Handbook says "On a multi-lane road, you must not cross or drive on a continuous white lane line, except to avoid an obstruction, or, to allow the required room to safely overtake a bicycle rider." You were on the wrong side of the lines because you were avoiding an obstruction (the roadwork trucks which were stopped in the lane before that point), but at the point you crossed, the obstruction was behind you, so I don't know if it still counts as avoiding the obstruction. I'll check it out when I pass by the area on Saturday. Hopefully they have moved the trucks away by then, and there's a clear path to go straight over the bridge.
