Let’s all remember what happened BEFORE this scene. Ash was raped and Eiji had just comforted him. Ash sees Eiji as his light. The one person who will do anything for him and expect nothing in return. That is Eiji. Ash just lost all of that in this split second and it was HIS fault ( he blames himself since they were after him) that he got hurt.

In the second opening theres a scene of him walking at night with his hand on his stomach (his stab wound) wearing the same clothes as he was when he was “sleeping” in the library during the day so I guess that was the anime producers way of saying he’s still alive but also keeping the end similar to the manga

Man, you can tell Ash sees Eiji as his light. Just look at how, when he gets shot from Ash's point of view, everything goes gray and colorless. Eiji is the source of light Ash has been searching for his entire life. He lost his brother and his best friend to the same thing. Eiji is the only hope Ash cherishes.
Truly, if you rewatch this series, you'll notice subtle colour/lighting changes around this 2 characters, especially when it's during significant moments. But sometimes it happens in tiny moments too, it's honestly heartbreaking and amazing how much the producers put their thoughts in conveying the relationship between this two 😢
The library scene where Eiji wanted to console a grumpy Ash is one ^^
There’s no way there just friends. I think eiji got IN when there was that rare window with none of ash’s friends died, but they’re relationship evolved when shorter and the kid died...
They’d both give they’re life for the other and couples like that gives everyone hope. You can just see how much ash would give for eiji and vice versa

I like that Ash shooting Shao Tai so many times is a call back to episode 11 when The Fly is selling guns to Ash and offers him a semi-automatic pistol which he refuses because " he won't be able to stop" shooting if he uses one.
Finally someone said it T.T He knew he'll become a monster if he's gone out of his mind. Back then, it was his uptight sanity and awareness that holds him back. Now, it was Eiji only.

When Eiji teaches Ash how to say goodbye, he says it like “sa-yo-u-na-ra” with a U, and Ash repeats it back as “sa-yo-na-ra” without the U. Saying it with the U is formal in Japan, so it makes sense that that’s what Eiji would teach Ash because it’s used the most in real life situations, but Ash says it back to Eiji in the non-formal way, without the U, the way you’d say it to a friend. I just thought that was sweet

I remember watching this when I had to wait each week for an episode to come out. Omg it was torture not knowing what was going to happen to eiji until that next week.

I think ash and eiji have a really special relationship! I don‘t think they are like brothers I think that’s more than a brother love! But we will never know it to 100% so ... I still hope in the heaven they will find there peace and can still live with their souls together.

It was confirmed by the author that Ash developed a crush on Eiji and in the sequel manga Sing said that Ash and Eji were "like soulmates and loved each other like lovers would." Also Eiji never got over Ash and never dated anyone after he died. Now they were never together in any official capacity but it was implied that after the story was over they were going to get together. Banana Fish feels more like a story about broken love than this action packed, crime drama type anime that we were promoted, and I love it and hate it at the same time, this was not right!
After all of his shit moment, why? I only hope for his new life will not be haunted by anyone. I just want him to be able to find his first happiness. haa ,, for the first time I watched this anime I felt very sorry about his past life but after a few episodes I adore how strong his personality is, how good leader he is. The cruel fate, the dark world, why did they choose him to suffer?
