    While I haven't read all the comments, most seem to talk about defense and attack and all that. A major difference between this game and more standard games is that Kanbei's power meter should be way more efficient than Colin. Colin spends a lot of time not gaining charge due to Gold Rush being active, and Gold Rush does not deter Kanbei's push in the slightest. You can actually see this in the video Colin uses 4 normal powers which costs 2 bars each with 20% extra on each successive use, so 2+2.4+2.8+3.2 and has 1.5 bars before Kanbei's second Samurai Spirit (Which is actually 2.7 bars) totalling 13.1 bars generated. Meanwhile Samurai Spirit costs 7 bars and the second use costs 8.4 bars meaning in the time it took Colin to generate 13.1 bars, Kanbei actually got 15.4, which seems absurd since I'm not sure I would ever describe Deejus_ as being in a position where he was losing more engagements (and thus should be gaining power faster).

    In my unprofessional opinion, while both COs are comparably broken, I always figured Kanbei takes the matchup handily. He just takes advantage of Colin's weaknesses the way no other CO is able to. It's probably map and player dependant, but it's just such a hard matchup for Colin to play when nearly every engagement is so ineffective.

    • @Alternative-Works

      As mentioned elsewhere in comments, if the top/mid/bot lanes were separated by terrain (and/or the fronts are spread out), the matchup swings the other direction. Colins air units outmaneuver the anti-airs of kanbei and he can't afford to build fighters. Also, Colin snowballs - if he wasn't pressured (like he was in this open center map) you'll see the deadly DOUBLE gold rush! It would make that 60k buy he had this game look like chump change =P

    This map definitely favors Kanbei a little because of how much income controlling the center provides and how the layout encourages a single large front down the middle. Colin tends to do better on more open map layouts with any given front providing only a small income advantage. That way, Colin can flood every front with cheap, high tech units leaving Kanbei having to choose which ones to reinforce. Perhaps a map like Locked and Loaded could have provided a more interesting matchup for these two COs.

    I'd say in this matchup it's Kanbei who has the edge. The defense is just too strong for Colin. Especially without Comm Towers, this is even more ridiculous. Once Kanbei can get units like Megatanks, the game is basically lost for Colin. That means Colin has to push early with the early spamm of medium tanks and neos

      Colin never really _snowballed_ his power. I think that was a critical mistake. Colin should have been able to save up significant amounts of money and start multiplying his money exponentially, to the point where he doesn't need any cities at all to get his megatank+bomber spam going.

  • @Zetact_
    @Zetact_ Год назад +138

    I think that unless you're talking CO specialists (which probably wouldn't happen) the edge would go to Kanbei since fundamentally the drawback of his increased cost doesn't require a shift in the player's thinking. Colin's option of saving money and having access to all the insanely expensive units - he's got a lot more moving parts, so even if one might argue that he has a higher ceiling, getting there requires a lot more complexity than Kanbei's game plan being more or less "play like normal but it's harder to tech up."

    • @incredibleflameboy
      @incredibleflameboy Год назад +2

      More moving parts for Colin players means more moving parts for the opposing CO except they don't get to choose the flow of the game. Colin can lock most units down by surrounding them with cheap units. I rarely play Colin but he's actually a very user friendly CO offering much more flexibility since pretty much nothing is absolutely essential when the horde is moving behind it

    • @Zetact_
      @Zetact_ Год назад +4

      @@incredibleflameboy Not specifically talking about the board state but rather the ability to capitalize on the CO abilities. Colin needs to account for not having two-shots that most COs take for granted. He has to build more units like MD Tanks, Rockets, and Mega Tanks that a player might not be as used to using, on top of his Gold Rush reinforcements needing a couple turns to reach the front line. And his Gold Rush he needs to decide between "save up" or "pop it now" as opposed to Samurai Spirit which is just "Do I want to be untouchable this turn?"
      Colin is still broken as hell but for the habits that a lot of the high level players have built up he requires more shifts in play style than just the increased deployment cost. It's like how in Tier 2, Olaf is just a normal CO to play while everyone else requires working around the CO's unique play style, and when going up against Olaf they need to take the snow into account. Even if you think Max or Eagle are more broken than Olaf, there is the benefit that in Tier 2 matchups, Olaf players don't need to account for their own CO's powers or weaknesses and just rely on fundamentals. Less stuff on the mental stack.

    "He takes the bait" I mean you don't have any choice. You can't let a shot on an md tank go to waste or things will just get worse. It's not like the tank is going to go away or Colin will ever stop charging his meter. I mean outside of very niche situations, not charging the enemy meter is just a doomed idea. You aren't going to just stop attacking them and let them kill you on every front.

  • @linguotgr
    @linguotgr Год назад +8

    Colin's biggest problem in the Kanbei matchup is that when he pops his gold rush, it still takes a couple of turns to really get that extra firepower on the front line. Kanbei really doesnt have that issue. I think this is why that initial md tank sacrifice was a misplay here. Possibly a game ending one. He took 12,800 off of the front line, and slowed down getting an extra 18,400 to the front lines, to get and extra 19,200 in two turns. Kanbei's biggest strength is that once he takes something, it is REALLY hard to get it back, and that he can take stuff pretty quickly. As soon as that md tank went down, Kanbei was able to secure the entire center of the map, *before* those neotanks even got in to place to contest him. Then he had his power to help deal with them.

  • @uzernamefail
    @uzernamefail Год назад +9

    I feel like Colin basically can't take direct engagements against Kanbei and has to rely on teching up to things before Kanbei can fight back. Like getting early bombers out before AA is able to cover them, or getting rockets early to out zone Kanbei. Winner is likely map dependent; this map provides a lot of room for ground engagements, which favors Kanbei.
    I would love to see some kind of messed up match with one of Sensei or Grit. Not sure what CO really works against them like Colin/Kanbei though.

      Kanbei wins because he basically wins all confrontations where he isn't in overwhelming disadvantage just by being too sturdy. he requires at minimal double effort to take down a single unit of his, almost if not all natural oneshots in the game don't work on Kanbei, so to remove one unit of his you must spend at minimun 2 actions, while he has access to a lot of oneshots other CO's don't. and due to his already high base defense, and the way defense scales on AW2, he benefits the most from terrain than any other CO (that includes Lash, a paltry 10% firepower per star doesn't compare at all).

    what Hachi has:
    prices are at 90%
    no Day2day abilities or penalties.
    CO Power lowers prices to 50%
    Super CO turns all cities into Bases for one turn, and prices are 50%
    Hachi has a better chance than Colin, but his firepower isn't that much better than his, so he still loses capture battles, Hachi's trump card is Merchant Union, that can allow him to overwhelm Kanbei unit count and map presence.
    Hachi can tech up fast, but not as fast as Colin, his power is Gold Rush but better, because he almost doubles his buying power vs Colin multipling his by 1.5.
    can Hachi do anything about Kanbei defenses other than teching up, and even that is questionable.
    i am actually intested in see Hachi vs Kanbei.
    Sensei screws Kanbei over because he can summon Infantry/Mechs for FREE and he even gets money from it.
    Sensei might be even more nightmarish than Hachi, and he has Day2Day bonuses as well, and those are awesome.

    30% extra defense without factoring terrain bonuses is already bonkers, add the -10% damage that Colin units deal and you are looking at more or less 40% defense ON ROADS. Breaking Kanbei's walls is already horribly difficult even with COs that get a firepower increase in their day to day like Von Bolt, who the hell ever though that Colin had a chance?

    get a map where there's a lot of cash? Kanbei has the edge, he doesn't need to worry about his higher cost. if the battle is mostly focused on one front instead of spread out this helps him out as well as he can make bigger investments on his main line and break it open as opposed to having to think about multiple lines
    get a map where there's not a lot? Colin has the edge. being able to get better units out without major sacrifice is a major edge in these cases. a map where multiple fights happen favor him too as he can throw, example, a medium tank to a front where you have 2 tanks there. but you won't have 2 tanks on that one front, you'll have to split em up.

Sure he can spam units way harder, especially with gold rush, but what does it matter when you lose every encounter you are in whether it is your turn or kanbei's? The defence all kanbei's units get is just unassailable for colin who has an attack power debuff so even with just an infantry wall, kanbei can stall for as long as he wants, picking and choosing when to engage when it is good for him and there isn't much colin can do about it.

    Not managing money very well with Colin is like not building indirects with Grit. It doesn't help that the airport was positioned too far away for Colin to not utilize early battle copters. Also the value of Kanbei's units are vastly underestimated, Colin HAS to print money to make up the difference. Attackwise, 120% cost for 40% attack (+1 comm tower) vs 0% defense is 140% attack value on Kanbei attacking. For Colin, 80% cost for 0% attack (+1 comm tower) vs 30% defense is 70% attack value for Colin. In other words, in combat, Kanbei's units are twice as valuable for only 50% higher cost.

    Way too few rockets and bombers. Collin wants to be making a rocket almost every turn, and he also *has* to use his airport every turn (including transports, they make surprisingly competent walls for him, and his mechs are underrated. The very slight durability helps them a ton). Regular tanks and mediums are useless, and even megas are really just walls in this matchup.
    Also by the third gold rush, you want to be banking multiple turns of income. If you aren’t able to, you’re already kinda effed.

    • @sensha5470

      @@stijnl Honestly I’m barely making my way up above the default 800, so not great, but it’s partly cause I play alot of customs. Collin vs kanbei in particular is a matchup I enjoy, with jugger mirror being a close second.
      Also what mangs said about repairs is only half true. I find that repairing anything bigger than a rocket is useless, and you never wanna waste an airport turn on healing. However small units like your rockets or your infantry should be kept topped up whenever you can. Collin’s weakness is unit count, so maintaining them is key.
      The end goal as Collin is to have enough cash to pump out a bomber & three rockets every turn and still have a net profit when you gold rush. 90% of games end before you reach it, but that’s your win condition if it goes to stalemate. Kanbei’s win condition is to have a single neotank (supported by alot of AA) before your rocket count can deal with it.

    • @sensha5470
      @sensha5470 Год назад

      @@stijnl kanbei side of things is one I know alot less. Regular ol’ tankspam is what I find to be the thing I struggle with most. Though AA are also scary because collin relies on his extra base (air) to keep up in unit count, and they can chew up collin’s troops just as well as they do air. If kanbei can get a fighter out (which is usually a bad move because it’s just as expensive as the win button neotank, but sometimes Kanbei doesn’t have enough AA to support a neo if I’ve been dilligent about killing it. It’s literally impossible to deal with and bring down unless he plays very dumb (it can dive a missile and not really care.)
      Kanbei’s indirects are also fearsome, but are too expensive for him to reasonably deploy more than a couple. They make great support but he shouldn’t try to win the indirect war, because he can’t. His entire side of things is to play reserved and then yeet through every opening and chew up the juicy rockets. If he breaks collin’s lines and reaches the rockets during a samurai spirit, it’s usually over, even if collin is in endgame mode and pumping out rockets and megas every turn from every base.

    Haven't watched but i'm making a prediction really fast.
    Unless it's an early game rush, or a notably low-earning map, Kanbei wins.
    The longer the match goes, the less and less the disparity of funds matters, as Kanbei's units take less and deal more damage. Once Kanbei begins to pump out the stronger units, it becomes a much greater challenge for Colin to push through to make any progress. Colin would need multiple units to effectively take down one of Kanbei's, since it's a..what, 30-40% disparity in their stats depending on the game?
    And any progress is dead in the water against even Morale Boost, much less the far more damning Samurai Spirit, which Colin would need to pop *his* super just to have a chace.
    And that's not accounting for *any other detail* that could affect damage.
    Of course, Colin has the obvious advantage of early game funds and an easy way of increasing that, mixed with Kanbei's own increased prices...It means Colin's early or small game advantage is more pronounced and easier to actually pull off. It's just...I think Colin would have significant issues in actually succeeding in an early rushdown against Kanbei's limited but stronger units. A damage disparity of a negative attack against a seriously increased base defense is just too great of a gap.
    Colin builds up to overwhelm with sheer numbers, but Kanbei is just...too solid a wall for Colin to overwhelm.

      Someone likes canto! Sadly it would be incredibly broken. There would have to be some significant drawbacks to make it balanced. Right now you can build infantry lines because only 1 melee unit can hit another - with canto you can get up to 2 attacks in, with the 2nd delivering the deathblow, thus breaking the line. (ex inf vs inf 10/10 -> 8/5. Canto back, 2nd inf vs inf 10/5 -> 10/0) This isn't even mentioning air units and indirects having it...

    You say Colin is a snowball CO, but that doesn't work when he's up against a defensive CO like Kanbei who won't let him get the snowball rolling. The thing is, Kanbei simply gets more value out of his units, even with Colin's decreased price. When you take into consideration that, after all of the boosts, a Kanbei tank isn't much worse off than most other COs' medium tanks, you essentially have Kanbei rolling out slightly below-average middies at a cost of 8400, whereas Colin still has to pay 12000 for his slightly below-average middies. That's not even taking into account the absolute shutdown power that is Samurai Spirit, which, especially against an attack-crippled CO like Colin, effectively grants Kanbei near-invincibility for an entire turn. The only circumstances under which Colin stands a chance against Kanbei is on a map with so many properties that Gold Rush allows him to absolutely overwhelm his opponent, which this map doesn't have nearly enough of. As such, this match was pretty much decided the moment the COs were selected.

    Haven't started the video yet - but my guess is going on Colin. While Kanbei has some deadly units and can definitely shut down opponents with a wave of powerful things you can barely damage, it takes him awhile to ramp up. Colin however can come out the gate swinging much harder, pressing Kanbei before he can get there, and while Kanbei has far stronger units, when outnumbered, it ends up being too much of a detriment that his economy is always 40% weaker than Colin, as he needs a LOT more properties to keep up with Colin.

    I believe this matchup of Colin vs Kanbei is very nuanced.
    In standard funds, i believe colin is favoured on med to large maps. This is because he will outnumber the opponent as kanbei has alot less gold. High fund patches up Kanbei's weakness.
    In high funds, I believe colin is possibly favoured because of megatanks. The way you beat Kanbei is Megatanks. Kanbei's neotanks will get obliterated by colin megatank even with first strike advantage.

  • @TheFinalChapters
    @TheFinalChapters Год назад

    Elcaroman unfortunately played right into Deejus's hands throughout the match. Neotanks are NOT good against Kanbei, much less a Kanbei with plenty of artillery. Their relatively low defense means they get one decent hit in and then get swarmed. And unlike normal matchups, the strongest part of the neotank doesn't apply: the ability to break just about any wall.
    The only path to victory for Colin, which is the same one that allows Kanbei to be tier 1 in high funds, is to force unit triangles on Kanbei. Specifically Bomber->Fighter/Anti Air.
    I'm not saying Elcaroman is a bad player in general, but the reason Kanbei won so decisively here was a skill issue, not a CO issue.

    Money is Power, but Kanbei is Super Power; Too much even. And Colin's probable ace in the hole to outdamage past Kanbei's defenses effectively requires him to NOT have as many units present in a timely fashion. Sucks that even trying to rely on Luck and Rockets/Artillery to take potshots at the Emperor falls short when their high Defense ALSO guards against RNG shenanigans better than most.
    The only reasonable way for Colin to win seems to be in somehow just plain intercepting and defending at LEAST 2 more factories than Kanbei has before Kanbei even steps _near_ them, assuming you can get enough funds to move faster and further before he can by at least 2 turns; But we're talking tight windows of opportunity here at best given that even on favorable terrain Kanbei constantly hits harder than most as is, and Colin just tickles the guy most turns.

With 2 comm towers you get colin with 10% offense (basicaly Hawke) and now you can kind of sort dent Kanbei's units. You have to starve Kanbei by having more properties and damaging CO also helps, since Kanbei's repairs are expensive.
