Crazy to me that people in the comments are acting like the JP voices are "original" when HSR is a Chinese game. The EN lines for both Ratio and Topaz are more accurate tone-wise to the CN voice lines than the JP ones (can't speak for KR since I don't know the language), which are too neutral and don't convey the disappointment both characters express in CN.
Someone even pointed out in JP Topaz uses language that is disrespectful when talking to your superiors, so she's NOT happy to see him at all. Idk why people are crying that EN fucked up again or whatever new thing they wanna complain about in regards to dub this week
@@shamussarrazine6623nah Topaz is using casual form of speech instead of polite form. It’s not rude per se, you could even say that they are close enough to be speaking casually with each other. People in China have already stated they prefer the ENG versions of the VA's as well to the Japanese versions. People always go in on this game with the whole "I HATE ENG DUBS" and then they play star rail while listening to the Japanese dub which isn't cared for much by the Chinese playerbase. It's not even about being authentic to the original dub because yeah...Chinese, not Japanese. Some people just stubbornly hate ENG Dub even though it's been getting increasingly better over time.
Because jp dubs is the standard. Anime-related stuff was born in Japan and 95% of it is still made there, it's hard to ignore that and pretend JP doesn't exist just because this time it's Chinese. The very existence of Mihoyo was made possible because of JP anime. Just because you make a burger in Sweden, that won't stop people from using the ones they make in the US as THE reference. @luckylaniang5574 it's not about what it sounds like, keep in mind Aventurine is her superior. In CN culture, the fact that she is speaking like that to her superior is insanely disrespectful.
Istg the REACHING that is being done here like how tf are people saying she hates Aventurine, she just sounds tired and disappointed that there’s work to do and don’t even get me started on Ratio.
People don't realize that the only reason there's "translation issues" between EN and the other 3 is because there's a vast difference in how English works with grammar rules and other things like that compared to JP, CN, and KR. All things considered they did a good job at keeping it pretty accurate while adding their own unique spin on it
She doesnt like Aventurine at all outside of him being a good coworker, as stated in her Voiceline regarding him. "Unsavory characters i dont care for"
The Korean one is *too* happy. Chinese and Japanese both sound very similar in a "Oh it's you...let's get it over with!" manner. It's almost like they're worked on by completely different teams getting scripts that don't have adequate notes on them...kinda like how they ended up with a translation error in the EN script that nobody would've noticed if it didn't end up becoming a plot point, and then suddenly they issue a patch note saying they changed it.

Topaz EN VO doesn't sound annoyed but worried, after all, Aventurine likes to gamble everything he has all the time, his luck gives him a guarantee win but is Topaz safe? She knows she isn't
I really hate that for no reason the JP one is shown first when it is the CN one that matters. I'm not fluent in Chinese but I know a bit, and "哎?" (the sound Topaz makes) is an expression of "disappointed surprise". You make that sound when something bad, but not tragic, unexpectedly happens. Even her saying "that's fine." Is passive-aggressive and disrespectful to a superior, she should be saying "that's good!" There is a cultural difference here where in Chinese you are expected to be respectful to those senior to you so even when she is expressing this, she speaks in a more gentle tone to show her respect to Aventurine since he has a higher rank.
Yeah, I think everyone complaining about EN localization has failed to consider the cultural differences at play. I don't know as much about CN, but in Japan you have to be very mindful about how you speak to your superiors if you don't want to offend them. And South Korea, similarly, is VERY hierarchical. So it wouldn't surprise me at all if every language has the same underlying sentiment, but the other three have to be more subtle about expressing it so that Topaz doesn't come off meaner than intended.
@thefanciesttortoise557 Aventurine is higher rank than her, the stonehearts are not equal with Diamond being one of the highest. We know Jade is above Aventurine and the Belobog-Topaz quest tells us Topaz is below Aventurine. Remember, Aventurine is the one who demotes Topaz rank in the cutscene. It's also pretty obvious just based on the gem values. Topaz must be one of the lowest stonehearts because topaz is not very valuable in terms of precious gems.
@floofzykitty5072 it's been a while since I did that quest. I remember the conversation, but I forgot if he was just talking about her demotion or if he was the one demoting her
@@floofzykitty5072 are you sure it was aventurine who demoted her? Isn't she in a meeting with multiple people that use heavy filter to distort their voice when she was demoted? I didn't recall aventurine being the one who demote her
I don't speak Chinese or Korean so I can only offer insight based on tone, but the Japanese and English ones aren't really all that different. Topaz is showing disrespect to Aventurine by calling him "kimi". In English we don't really have that kind of word choice so the best way is reading it a different way. Moreover the Korean one sounds *too* happy to see him. We fixate on the English sounding like they don't want to see him, but neither the Chinese nor Japanese tracks particularly want to see him either. They're just being reasonably polite. The fact that Topaz is using casual Japanese as well with someone who's ostensibly her superior or at least equal within the IPC is also disrespectful. But yeah the Korean one feels the most "off".
Did people also forget that Topaz got demoted and Aventurine instantly took her spot due to what happened in Belobog and how she was mocked BY HIM for it? She didn't give her cornerstone because she wanted to
Yeah no, the japanese one has no where near the same level of digust and angst, Kimi being there doesn't implant the same feeling in the slightest or bring it even anywhere near it, tone would hurt more, and it's not there.
JUST TO SAY THIS .. but EN AND CN are pretty much the same.. like it's just "DISSAPOINTMENT" nothing much lol. so yeaaa I'd say EN did a great job with this one. Since CN is prob the source.
funnily enough CN and EN is pretty close in tone and characterization. you don't express or sigh in disappointment/contemplating tone when you meet someone you consider as close friend or has a good relationship. JP sounds way too friendly/neutral consider their exchange on Jarilo-6. can't say for KR, i know nothing about the language and culture.
I think they have friendly banter, but their morals are completely different. I could see them having a debate on who's idea is best for the community they have to collect from.
Nah Japanese isn't glad to see him. She's just surprised. It's actually fairly neutral like "Oh. It's you. Let's get to it." BUT how you read it is important: "OH! It's you again! Let's get to it." "Oh... It's YOU again. Let's get to it." Same line different ways of reading it. And let's not even get into how translation works...
I think people will never understand that tone translates differently in different languages. She's saying the exact same thing in all 4 languages but due to social statuses in asian countries she is more passive aggressive in all except EN. Hoyo fans are so stupid it's laughable
The en just make it has bad relationship despite they're in one team according to the lore. While other 3 languages just like passive-agressive kind of friendship.
She sounds more like she's disappointed that she doesn't get to complete the mission (deal) alone. Y'know, because their missions are like commissions. With pay.
When you finish the story with JP voices Topaz sounds like she is holding back tears reporting Aventurines Gem losing color but the EN has like “I dont care“ feeling dunno who is the script writer for the EN team but he should get fired
A lot of it isn't the script writer on the EN side, it's the CN side not providing adequate notes on what they intend for characters. We actually have evidence of this via the mistranslated "make friends with a mute" vs "make friends with a rock" line that ended up being important. It's the CN side's responsibility to mark lines like that as plot-important so they're translated and interpreted the same way no matter what. Calling for someone to be fired because they received bad notes is ludicrous
@@kyuven Funny how the CN doesnt provide adequate notes for the characters, but every language but english doesnt mess up, funny, no? Stop with the bias, the EN dub should be responsible for their job and when they mess up. They changed A TON of lines in the 2.1 quest, even the last one calling Gallagher a Enigmata goon. They messed up so bad that they needed to fix it some days after the update, just like the "mute" vs "rock" thing (that didnt happen in the JP and KR dub, and thats how people found out). They consistently the only one messing up with the translations and cutting things for some reason. Stop trying to defend it.
it’s really based since topaz’s voiceline about aventurine basically hoping that trailblazer don’t have to face aventurine (despite of them working together in ipc)
Maybe I'm an oddball for thinking this, but this is not a Luka & Seele thing. Between all the translations, I wanna say it's consistent, unlike said Luka & Seele interaction.

I see, typical arguments here. People in the comments talking about inconsistencies when they don't know about cultural differences and how languages differ from each other. People who use voicepacks other than EN without knowing those languages themselves have no basis to comment on them - you don't know anything, so what's the point? It's not like EN is perfect, but people in this case are just talking out of their ass. Not only voices, but people also somehow decided that EN wasn't accurate to the lore, which just shows their lack of media literacy.
Nah since the dialogue is virtually the same across all 4 translations BUT the KR and EN ones are on drastically different sides of the spectrum in terms of readings, this is less "the localizers" and more "the original team didn't send adequate notes on what the lines are supposed to sound like" It's no surprise when the Chinese and Japanese ones are close enough, since those are the ones they put the most effort into since they can make the most of kanji/hanzhi and superscripting.
@@kyuven I understand that- but perhaps it’s because I’m too cynical that I see it as the fault of localizers. I find it hard to believe it’s an honest mistake instead of an intentional attempt to distort the source material for a western audience.

So why does she sound so aggressive when he hasn't done anything, yet? (Note that I actually love their en voices). Also, Topaz, Jade and Aventurine are literally working on team here, it's just Jade and Topaz only moving after Aven finished his part on the dreamscape 4.Aven was calling to checking on her, he explicitly said it himself, he even warned her that Jarilo-VI is a low reward high risk mission and he emphasized that again in the call. If anything, this just shows that he cares for her I would agree with you about the directing in en here if my knowledge about them is still limited in 1.4 But, since we got new Insight about stonehearts, I think en actually undermining their relationship a bit here I don't say she should sound too soft, but she doesn't need to be so aggressive, either
@@ashanna6657 Sorry but your first point being that way means you didnt read the story at all. Not to mention that the harmony aven that claims about the bond also clearly states that even aven lied to himself so that really doesn't say much. Mind you this 'harmony' aven knows everything about aventurine's true thoughts and feeling, he also seems to wanted aven to lay it bare, making aven confront everything in his life, starting from his past(childhood) to his future(death).

Even her saying "that's fine." Is passive-aggressive and disrespectful to a superior, she should be saying "that's good!"
There is a cultural difference here where in Chinese you are expected to be respectful to those senior to you so even when she is expressing this, she speaks in a more gentle tone to show her respect to Aventurine since he has a higher rank.
Senior? I thought they were the same rank

CN is the original and most acurrate.

2. Because Aven is full of deceit and he would make us do dangerous things without us realizing it. We just don't know or lack experiences to handle someone like Aven. But, Topaz is experienced and works with Aven almost every time(they literally on the same dept.)
3. Yeah, so tired doesn't equal hating. So why does she sound so aggressive when he hasn't done anything, yet? (Note that I actually love their en voices). @@kyarumomochi5146no offense but your claim only works assuming that jade was the one who made the plan but knowing aventurine's nature i think it's more high likely that it was him who propose the plan himself considering how huge of a gamble it was. Hell, the call he made back in belobog was him asking for topaz's help with his job on penacony which gives more credence to him being the one who planned to borrow jade and topaz's stone.

@@wangshuping137 I kinda forgot, I plug it in a bunch of random tone checker online, I also use ChatGPT, and also try translating the line to my mother tougue since mine is also in the sino family of language, kinda figure if there's something that doesn't translate well into English, it might show at least a hint in mine.
Maybe you can break down the line and why it's rude?
Who tf is responsible for EN translations bruh
“As artist intended”
It is different from CN, but I can't say it feels inaccurate if you don't compare it to CN. Even though Topaz trusts Aventurine to get results there is no way she enjoys working with him, they have such different approaches to their work and Aventurine's can be rather unpleasant at times.
Its always EN lmao
I shipped them both!❤🤍💚
Nice
Topaz literally in lore doesn't particularly like Aventurine, she even says in a voiceline she's nothing like him and she sincerely hopes you never have to deal with him. She obviously will cooperate with him but its literally like a colleague she isn't going to act like she's buddy-buddy with him. For once the EN displays that the best alongside CN: both sound like someone who is putting up with someone, JP and KR completely miss that nuance from Topaz. RUclips comments missing a point of a char is on course though so not surprised
As much as I would agree with you, the EN just being very extra by adding the disgusted tone.

I mean.. it IS aventurine lol people are just pretending to overreact because it is an EN dub and a female character not being so "kawaii desu UwU"
No? It’s because every other language sounds like they get along, and topaz is kind. English just makes her sound like she hates him, when she clearly doesn’t in the other languages.
Let's just indore the fact that English sounds the closest to the Chinese version.
@@beauuuuu5874 The Chinese dub also has a bit of an exasperated sigh. Also, Topaz isn't all kind too especially if it's business. I don't think the EN dub "hates" him. But they aren't chummy at all lol
Chinese is the best, but english isn't that far behind this time.
I like English the most tbh, they did a good job giving the characters some personality
every language has personality lol. whats your point
@@tardwrangler1019yea it gets a little boring when cutesy and demure is every female character’s personality
@@slytherinlady3907 how is it cutesy when she is being nice? anyway idc if shes cutesy or not, what i care is some consistency between VAs.
@@tardwrangler1019 I'd rather have brilliant variance than boring consistency. But to each their own, I guess
@@ShiningLight you realise hoyo can make characters that are rude right? Instead of EN VAs hijacking and changing a characters personality from CN, they can just demand hoyo to add more characters with "non boring" personalities
I think the English rather close with the Original (CN) rather the JP dub
