    When I was a younger man, back in the early seventies, I drove a 631 from Kingsport TN to Nashville, over 300 miles. We had a convoy of two scrapers and two escort trucks. We took I-81 to I-40. I don't think we would get too far doing that now.

    • @Bostonpowercat
      @Bostonpowercat  2 года назад +5

      @Larry VanDyke,that was a long old tramp,I have taken my old 631b out 10 miles that was plenty far enough!,lol,they don’t ride like the 6wheelers,lol.Over hear you can’t move much big gear now without a lowboy.👍

    I'm like some other commenters. I would want to see this at a tractor pull, pulling in the unlimited class. With the weight, traction, torque, and horsepower I can see it being very impressive.

    • @michaelthebarbarian3380
      @michaelthebarbarian3380 2 года назад +6

      It would win. Easy.

    • @Draxindustries1
      @Draxindustries1 2 года назад +11

      It may be a heavy weight and have a relatively high torque output but it's only 450hp. It couldn't pull the scraper attachment with just the tractor engine, it needs the extra 500hp 6cylinder fitted to the scraper. It's doubtful whether this tractor would do very well in a pull.

    • @tomfips4682
      @tomfips4682 2 года назад +1

      @@Draxindustries1 Agreed. I've ran one. They are for hauling heavy loads and higher speeds, but could no even load themselves. And any hills you would be downshifting like mad. Big, but not that powerful.

    • @wmden1
      @wmden1 2 года назад +8

      @@Draxindustries1 Pulling a load that has already been loaded, I don't think would be much problem. Where the problem comes in is loading the carrier. Depending on the texture of the dirt, even the pusher engine is not enough, in most cases. Thus they have the pusher dozers, or they hook 2 scrapers together to help load each other. The force it takes to pull the weight of a tractor pull sled is nothing, compared to the force and traction it takes for the blade to cut into and load the compacted dirt. Traction is the main thing scrapers don't have enough of to load by themselves. This tractor probably weighs half again as much as most pulling sleds and at least twice as much as the pulling tractors. I believe it would have enough traction and could pull the max loaded sled out of the arena and head home with it, albeit not as fast as the high horsepower, highly modified pulling tractors, which are lucky to get a full pull. Of course, I could be wrong. My thinking is based only on a life of observation of heavy equipment working, not on much actual operation, on my part.

      @@michaelthebarbarian3380 it would never win you don't know how much money is invested in a motor like that for a pull ...if so belive me it would not be the only one left in country that could use this truck and every pull truck would use the motor.. but like they said it's the last one ...this is not turbo you don't bring a snail to a race

    This was the first time a couple of years ago that I ever knew that Cat made a scrapper like this. I thought that the scrappers was always built in one unit rather than a tractor unit and scrapper. The 666 looks amazing after the refurbishment and you lot must have put some very hard and long hours into it :D

    • @Bostonpowercat
      @Bostonpowercat  8 лет назад +19

      Thanks for your kind words and yes it did take a fair effort getting all restored. Yes Cat started with the DW series of scrapers which were triple axle varieties and they were then superseded by the 600 series. They don't make any triple axle scrapers anymore, but having the "tractor" separate from the box as opposed as being all in one made them more stable at high speeds and uneven ground.
      Cheers

    @ketd9 Thanks for your comments,yes it is a hobby and I am going to restore her over time. It is one of the earlier ones with the 3x3 semi automatic transmission.
    My ultimate goal would be to get a box so it's a complete 1000hp monster!

      The Trans sounds like u take off and it's auto to the next gear then u shift and it's auto to the next gear and u shifted 3 times so is it a six speed Trans maybe ? The 1 time u turned left in the video from a stop and that's what it sounded and looked like 2 me so cool I love big old tractors!!

      @Ricky Bailey,yes she has a torque converter ,9 speed ,you have a 3 speed tranny which has 3 speeds in each gear ,converter drive/direct drive/overdrive.,giving the 9 speeds.

    That's one bad ass looking tractor! Born and raised in upstate NY and surrounded by rock quarries and out of the thousands of pieces of equipment I've seen and run over the years I've never come across one of these Cats! Wonder if it's something more popular in other parts of the country here? 🤔 I've traveled out as far as the Mississippi River in the Bread basket of the US plains and don't ever recall seeing those out there either, mainly all farm equipment there. What was your need to have such a great piece of equipment like this? I mean it's a stupid question I guess? I'm just curious about what they main purposes were if you or anyone here would happen to know off hand? It's like they took a standard farm tractor and gave it a shot of some serious steroids lmao! But she definitely moves pretty quickly on the highways for transporting them to sites! I know Europe has some narrow roads so it really must be impressive looking to see such a bohemith coming down a small town road......! Lol. She sounds great, I know it's an old post but I hope she's still running well for you over there. Let me know if anyone happens to know what their main functions were from Cat? Thanks.

      @Jim Clancio,hi thanks for your comment great to hear from you,yes it was a while ago but still have her all painted up now ,and have her Big Sister!,it is the front tractor from the Cat 666 motor scraper ,so she would pull a 54yrd box/pan with a rear engine on it,there would not be that many left in the States now ,Cat stopped making them many years ago.If you check out our other vids on the tube you will see her sister all complete !.Cheers👍

      straight cut gears in gear box , you should hear what they sound like without lube !

    • @sidcostello7532
      @sidcostello7532 5 лет назад +2

      it's got two transmissions - a 3 sp range transmission and a 3 sp torque divider giving 9 forward spds. The range transmissions were pretty tough....the torque dividers, not so much. Horribly labor intensive to clean a trans lube system contaminated due to component failure, hence the systems were rarely ever cleaned which resulted in premature failure of the next components...and the snowball effect would begin.

    I took care of 6 of these on a jobsite about 30 years ago. The parts and labor costs to keep them running ran the overall cost per hour of running them into the stratosphere. There is a very good reason that Cat quit building them.

    • @Bostonpowercat

      The extra set of tyres alone on the triple axle scrapers would add up!! Did you have any quadtracs (DD9) pushing the 666’s on site? What was the company you worked for?
      Cheers 👍

      @@Bostonpowercat no quads, but I did work for the dealer that designed and built the first ones as well as the first twin engine scraper, Peterson Tractor. My 666 days were during my time at Berglund Tractor, which was the worlds second Caterpillar dealership.

      Wow great stuff to hear, always nice to chat to someone who used to run them. Yes the great Buster Peterson designed the Quad along with a lot of other stuff. Peterson tractor have recently restored a Quad themselves and a Siamese D8.

      @@Bostonpowercat my most noteworthy work with the 600 series scrapers was to re power a D346 powered 660 water wagon with a Cummins K1160 for Prospect Point Coal at Point of Rocks, Wyoming in the early '80's. This made a very nice machine out of the 660. Jake's on the Cummins allowed for the elimination of the troublesome Cat retarder.

      @@Bostonpowercat yeah. I asked Bill Doyle why Peterson got away from the design and development that they were noted for. He said plain and simply - Liability. People are so sue happy that they (Peterson) just couldn't take on the risks involved anymore. Other than their track loader heavy demolition buckets, Peterson doesn't do any manufacturing or development of new products.
