The old Cat did it, but it took a lot of abuse, and it was a bit risky. Surely there was a better way. I would like to know if the tree lived, after all of that.

That Cat was NOT meant to work like that period!! It was meant to pull a land scraper ONLY!! This will wear out the center steering hinge assemblies real quick due to lifting front tires off the ground presents undo stress for which it was not designed!!
