Watching Andrew act is always a pleasure. He gets lost in his roles, to the point you can't recognize him anymore. Here you no longer see Andrew, you see this sensitive girl who's just trying to show her real self and be loved, in a world that frightens her...
Years later and this still one of the most beautiful music videos I’ve ever watched. Andrew Garfield gave a performance of a lifetime and he never said a word yet the emotions he displayed were felt. Not to mention the fact that the music itself just transmits pain and yet strength at the same time. I’m still get emotional after all this time
I cried watching this video for the first time. I still cry because it makes my blood boil that there's someone out there who has or is going through this. No one deserves to be treated like this, ever. Just wish I could hug everyone who has or is enduring this treatment.
I think many people in the comments don't understand the importance of videos like this. It's awesome to see anyone take a stand for the LGBT community and that's exactly what this does.
ALAN You don't have to "turn around" and be supportive of something like this if you're religious. Religion is about loving yourself and others, forgiveness and believing in a higher power. Fundamentalists give all religious people a bad name.
You have the courage to post here. I don't know what you are going through, with your identity and sense of self. Sometimes when we look into our mind it can be very scary. My hope is that you realise that you are beautiful, no matter what. And you are okay, and in a place where you can access some help, someone open and honest who you can talk to. Truly, wishing you nothing but the best.
This is a powerful message marred with hateful comments but it just shows as far as we've come the journey ahead is a long one. Thank you Arcade Fire and Andrew Garfield for doing this video.
agreed as a transwoman I feel this is dead on to how I feel for sure so powerful and its awesome that andrew had the guts to do this video with class and realness to it and not make it comical or a joke. yes its good to laugh but this is a serious song with a message. I am so glad arcade fire wrote this song and did this video and is being very respectful to the trans community and using it the right way and not making a bad stereotype. :) So awesome!!!
The ending was an actual live performance at Coachella that's the first Tim I ever heard "We Exist" and we we're listening to the lyrics then we see Andrew Garfield getting up on stage and we were just screaming! Amazing performance
It’s been years and I still come back to this video. I’ll never forget the first time I had my wig taken off in public, on the bus. I tried so hard to ignore them, but they saw me and decided I was an easy target. They took my hat off, and with it came my wig. They played catch back and forth with it. My roommate at the time, a very strong-willed, beautiful, black woman climbed over the seat and snatched it from one of the men, and shoved them in the chest. She told them they better think twice before doing it again. They were stunned.
We all can be any version of ourselves anytime at all. That's our right as a humans. You know you will not be defeated. There are good people everywhere. You are brave. I love Quentin Crisp ❤❤❤❤❤
I love being transgender. I've been through absolute hell, but I'm still here. I made it. The baggage that came along with it channeled an intrinsic strength I didn't know I possessed. I went from suicidal and depressed to appreciating the colors painted across the sky as the sun lays itself to rest; transitioning saved my life and broke the shackles that had been weighing me down. I'm finally free.
Your testimony just cheered me up. I'm still on the far side of the story, before transition, before even fully coming out of the closet, and I often feel that there is no hope, no light at the end of the tunnel. Thank you.
Leslie Johnson, there definitely is hope. I did face rejection from family and have faced discrimination within society. I was homeless and living in my car for a year and a half. It is not easy by any means, but it will make you stronger. I'm now on my feet with a decent enough job and no longer homeless. My family has finally come around seeing how happy transition has made me. It took awhile to prove to them I was born to identify as male--but they understand now. I'm also going to school full time. I wouldn't change my decision to transition because, while I have faced immense hardships, I have forged amazing friendships and have found acceptance with new friends. Here's to hoping you are able to take the next step. I will offer whatever advice I can, especially with coming out to family members. Am I to assume you are MTF? Feel free to e-mail at westy3028@gmail.com if you do not wish to relay personal information over the comments section. Look forward to hearing from you.
Franco Payan, your words do carry a massive amount of weight, even if they are said over the internet. Thank you for the support--it is truly appreciated, and I'm grateful for all of my allies.
*****, not sure why your comment was marked as spam and deleted, but I restored it. My apologies. Good advice on finding a local support group--that certainly helps!
this song touches me so much. i am bisexual, part of the lgbtqa+ community. Although this video is not specific to me it makes me proud. It amazes me how many people tell me i'm not real, i don't know myself but we're here. We are all different and we are all proud.
Umm Everyone is bisexual. And yes what we do in life is a choice. And yes, the lifestyle is a sin under The Most High God, which you can easily find by studying the Lbgtq agenda & the illuminati/nwo (they are all trans & gay). Wake up ppl. Satanism is gay.
To all those saying this is a bad influence, try watching the years worth of crap that has taught us to objectify women, that being depressed is a new trend and that the key to happiness is to drop sick beats and chase 2-dimensional pretty people. This video, right here, is the future. Embrace it. Learn from it. Let it open your mind and inspire you.
"This video, right here, is the future. Embrace it. Learn from it. Let it open your mind and inspire you." Now what, preacher, should I say amen? This is nothing else but a propaganda.
Nebeason I'm pretty sure it's suppose to inspire, it's not like he's threatening us or telling us that we're all horrible people if we don't obey his statement. He's just saying the future is becoming more open, more aware of the problems we have when it comes to people that are different around us. I mean he has yet to tell me how I should live my life, or what I should be dedicating my life to. He's just stating that it's eye opening is all. Propaganda should actually induce fear or a need to take action in us. That's how a lot of it works. Unless it's inducing fear in you, then i'm sorry. :)
A beautiful video, but so sad. When she dissociates while being beaten, flying free through the air... that got me. Then at the end as she seems to go to the other side and the whole crowd is cheering her... that got me too. My daughter is trans and it's a worry, how cruel the world can be. I hope it's getting better so she can have a safe and empowered life.
Haha I just need the courage to cross dress in public.. I can do it in private but walk around in public.. no way.. RUclips is a place to share our real feelings.
José Abel Salazar Lizárraga The person featured in this video isn't "a man dressed as a woman". She's a trans woman. To call her a man is to devalue her gender identity. While the trans woman in the video is fictional, misgendering her sends a message that trans people are likewise wrong about their gender identity. It's my hope that you're weren't intending to be hateful or hurtful, but instead didn't know the proper terminology to use.
Panda Pounce this kind of thinking is so much nonsense and removes any meaning from the word "gender". If i dress like a dog, and like to think of myself as a dog, that no more makes me a dog than if I dress like a woman and think of myself as a woman. People are free to do as they please, but they are not being devalued because they come up against reality and find other people aren't eager to play fantasy with them. The fact that there is contemporary thinking which feels supportive of these fantasies doesn't make them true. History has demonstrated all kinds of fads. a lot of people in the sixties thought they were changing the world fundamentally by smoking marijuana and listening to pop music. Some people still firmly believe that. It doesn't actually make it true. Lots of people don't believe in climate change, that doesn't make it not true. Dressing up as a woman and saying "I am a woman" says things about how you think and feel, but it doesn't make you a woman; unfortunately, in cold reality you remain a man, no matter how much you wish and pray. I feel tired of today's world where there is so much wishful nonsense and a willful zeitgeist to disperse with reality in favour of fancies. It's like some weird Taming of the Shrew world, except we are all expected to go along with it and validate delusion simply because academia got run over my the endless whining cacophony of identity politics warriors.
Here's the deal, plain and simple. If you infringe on one another's happiness and right to exist with no provocation or valid reason other than personal prejudice, you are a bad person. And you should probably consider changing your ways.
I can't really relate to trans-issues superficially, but this video was a prime example of human emotion that spans all demographics. Which I can definitely relate to.Plus, Andrew Garfield is a fantastic actor. Haha
Weatherva Well, that would be a valid reason to intervene would it not? If you notice, I mentioned that in my original post. I don't think you quite understand what I mean.
As a straight person...this also means alot to me . Not a bad way or condescending way , but it encapsulates the struggles of paving the way to being the person I am born as , and being ok with it , despite what people think , not seeking THEIR approval , but my own . The music , most importantly brings up so many emotions and memories. Beautiful song , a masterpiece
Win Butler, lead singer of Arcade Fire, said this song is about a gay son (and daughter too, of course) coming out to his father. But they recorded a music video with a trans character. Then, personally, I consider this is about all of us LGBT. Cheers to us. "Let 'em stare if that's all they can do Tell 'em it's fine, stare if you like Just let US THROUGH"
@@scottbarror1641 That's fine, enjoying music for the music itself is totally cool, but a lot of songs were made with some kind of message in mind, and I find being aware of those messages and understanding the lyrics contributes to my enjoyment of the music.
@@scottbarror1641 Maybe they're not really necessary for you, if you never felt the weight of society's backwards morality and judgment, lashing out at you for being who you are. You can enjoy whatever you like, but nobody is entitled to diminish the significance the message has for people with whom it resonates. Art is politics, and it's not too difficult to see that both subjects cannot and should not be dissociated.
We live in such self centered world everyone has to walk talk and be all alike!like i was telling my kids we dont live the the 60s anymore those hatred ppl will be gone soon this is the new millennium little by little we will accept each other the way we are this is 2020!
Yes, it's me. Arcade Fire is my favourite band and I am transgender. I will see them in 2 weeks and I will feel it like the character in the video. I think I'm gonna cry, there's people who understand me.
***** Citations for those claims? Because the APA, AMA, and about forty years of peer-reviewed scientific research say you're wrong Hell, there's more research out there claiming it's an endocrine disorder than what you claim it to be. :\ So yeah. Sources?
***** Well, you're free to believe your pseudo-scientific idea, that's your opinion. Sadly, it just doesn't align with the fact that there's no current trend in research that supports that little idea of yours. But hey, why not get a grant for a research study and perform it yourself if you know so much about it? Surely it'll pass review boards and get published.
Okay, well, you can enjoy your grade 8-level scientific approach to this. Meanwhile, rational, scientifically-minded folk will ignore conspiracies and superstition that you seem so hung up on (seriously, your lack of focus on scientific rigor makes me wonder if you're anti-vaccine, as I see many frame that issue in a similar way that you framed this), and will instead focus on understanding how/why people are trans, what treatments are significantly effective in alleviating or reducing symptoms, etc. I mean, yeah, feel free to your opinion. Everyone is entitled to opinions. But if you want people to take your ideology seriously, you should probably be able to back it up, otherwise you'll sound like my roommate's aunt who has a tendency to scour WebMD and 'diagnose' her friends and family with illnesses they don't actually have. They don't take her seriously anymore.
***** I'm a medicine student and I would never EVER treat a transgender as someone with a disease. Actually, if you dedicate some time studing this subject, I'm sure you'll perceive that it's likely that transgender won't be interpreted by science as a disorder in the near future. :)
I love when the 4 individuals dancers are cast as "masculine men" with facial hair and plaid shirts. This juxtaposition with the high heels, the way the shirts are worn and the characteristics of their dance moves brings up a powerful visual question for me. "What does it mean to be a man". To me being a man is a values statement of "I will stand up for those who cannot protect themselves". Something a man would do is own up to their mistakes, and be strong of will & character. In this video the attackers in the bar are male but not men. They are male cowards with so much insecurity they lose their will & character and exercise their physical strength unjustly on someone who cannot physically protect themselves. For this reason I especially like the casting choice of Andrew Garfield. The Spiderman statement "with great power comes great responsibility". The attackers in the bar have physical power but no responsibility. The attackers may consider themselves men based on their physical strength, and ability to attack someone weaker. Ironically, the dancers are likely just as strong if not stronger than these attackers while not sacrificing their will or character. I also like this casting choice, because it is both well done, and demonstrates multilateral support for the LGBT community.
This song gives an indescribable feeling. It feels like a mixture of pride, beauty, joy, but it also gives me a feeling of shame that lingers in the back of my head
As a trans person, Seeing a cis person play this role in the way that he did shows that he understands at least a little what we go through. The way he stares in the mirror and is shy around men and cautious but trying to be confident. It shows that cis people can visualize how we feel in such an intense and heartbreaking and heartwarming way. I understand why other trans people dont like how cis people play roles about us, but in certain circumstances I do like it. for example of a movie, they're looking for a person who fits the physical description of the person, especially if it's based off of a book. While trans people should always be offered positions for trans roles, they aren't always available. If they're looking for a pre-op pre-hormones person to play a role that is specified about pre-transition, it can be hard to find an actor that hasn't transitioned or doesn't plan to. Many actors have the financial or insurance means to transition however they please. For roles that require a transitioned or partially transitioned person the same challenges can be faced, the actors may not be available, (Which doesn't mean they shouldn't try to find a trans person first) But when you cannot find one willing to or available to partake "The show must go on". I've watched a few movies and music videos that were played by cis people and it is honestly quite amazing how great of a job they can do. As long as they don't turn around and act like they know what it's like to be trans or mock trans people, of course. We shouldn't blame the cis actors for them getting the part because honestly, it's the directors and producers who make these decisions "Then don't try out for the part" is a low blow, because we all need money. Some people honestly just want to help spread recognition or put out a good image. We have gay people who play as straight people trans people who play as cis people Straight people who play as gay people, how is it any different? It's acting, not reality. Just because a cis person plays a trans person doesn't mean they're mocking us, a gay person playing straight or bisexual doesn't make them fakers or trying to win "Straight brownie points" In reality, there's many many more cis than trans people, and we have to accept that we wont be portrayed in every way we desire. As long as it's done respectfully, I don't see any problem with it.
thats what separates an actor from a good actor. a good actor is believable in the role. i think andrew nailed the part, he doesnt have to be trans to be convincing.
I just want to say thank you for you comment. As an actor I find it hard to explain to my fellow LGBTIQA+ friends that we don't need to have a gay actor playing a gay man on screen. That's not what we want as actors, we want a large variety of roles. So, you cannot limit people to what they are on real life, otherwise as you said transgender actors would only play transgender roles; that won't make them happy. Acting is about playing characters that are different from you, that's why a straight girl can play a transgender man. And imagine the satisfaction that that girl will have if you consider that she did a great job! Acting is not reality. I understand the fight for representation and I stand to this fight; but don't confuse this with acting, acting have to be about the excitement of the roles. Again, thanks for understanding this.
They're walking around Head full of sound Acting like We don't exist They walk in the room And stare right through you Talking like We don't exist But we exist Daddy it's true I'm different from you But tell me, why they treat me like this? If you turned away What would I say? Not the first betrayed by a kiss Maybe it's true They're staring at you When you walk in the room Tell 'em it's fine Stare if you like Just let us through Just let us through They're down on their knees Begging us please Praying that we don't exist Daddy it's fine I'm used to 'em now But tell me, why they treat me like this? It's cause we do it like this Maybe it's true They're staring at you When you walk in the room Tell 'em it's fine Stare if you like Just let us through Just let us through Let 'em stare! Let 'em stare! If that's all they can do! But I'd lose my heart If I turn away from you Oh, daddy don't turn away You know that I'm so scared But will you watch me drown? You know we're going nowhere We know that we're young And no shit we're confused But will you watch us drown? What are you so afraid to lose? Down on my knees Begging us please Praying that we don't exist You're down on your knees Begging us please Praying that we don't exist We exist We exist We exist We exist
I'm seriously getting tired of comments on youtube. Wherever I look, hate and more hate. People seem to lose their humanity on the internet, as if their words are not aimed at real people. In real life most of them would never say these things, which it still terrifies me, cause they're still thinking it. I refuse to believe we're a species led by ignorant hate.
I know what you mean, though for me, it's not just RUclips. Nowadays I tend to avoid _any_ comment section, whether it's for a news article, a music video, or even a discussion for a game. Because in nearly every single place that allows comments, people use it to vent their rage and hatred towards anything and everything...as well as anyone. It gets so tiring avoiding it, and when I do happen to read horrid comments it gets tiring trying to repeatedly tell myself that "no, not _everyone_ is like that...only some of them" when I'm staring at a comment like "This shit makes me puke" in regards to gender identity disorder. There's only so much of that I can take. I should probably just quit the internet for a while. EDIT: Actually, I just found an addon/extension that disables comments on every site. Much better solution!
Wooo am I the only one who came here to see a music video by one of my favorite band, just to discover one of my favorite actor dress up like a woman and dance? That was quite a surprise omg
This music video genuinely makes me tear up every time. It is done so fantastically and the emotional punch of the topic is just so powerful. Acceptance and kindness should not be the exception, it should be the norm.
I know some trans people don't like this video but this just means everything to me and encapsulates so much about being trans to me. From the frustration of trying to pass to the horrible sinking feeling of watching a couple dancing together, knowing you're so undesirable as a trans person it's just so. Oh man...
Trying to pass is excruciating, not having a feeling of being one within themselves but having a duality fight within! The horror of waking up everyday to someone they see in the mirror they incredibly don't love, have self loathing for, a feeling of being trapped between a here and there and self hatred..heartbreaking..
There is something that I read once, a quote by Andy Warhol. I know it sounds simple, and not exactly mind-boggling philosophy, but I like it. Anyhow, here it is............. “Sometimes people let the same problem make them miserable for years when they could just say, So what. That's one of my favorite things to say. So what.” ----Andy WarholYou are trans? So what. At least you aren't boring. You are unique. Fighting that duality? Why fight it, let your duality be a strength. It gives you a unique perspective most people don't have. Don't pass as a 100% genetic female? So what. Look your best, be your best, act your best, and then you are the best you can be..........and that is all anyone can do. We can't ever really be responsible for how someone else may feel about us. We are, however, completely responsible for how we feel about ourselves. I know, sometimes easier said than done, but true self-acceptance is work, and that goes for a lot of people...trans or not. Another quote I like is "You are what you think about all day." If I think about all that I am not, all that I can't have, and about all the people that hate me, that is what I will be. Instead, I will choose to think of myself as unique, that I count, that I have something to offer the world, that I can't help but be myself and there is nothing wrong with being myself, that for whatever reason my life will be a bit tougher because I am trans, but it is that struggle that will offer me unique perspectives, develop my empathy and compassion for things and people, and help me to become a stronger and more evolved person. Sorry for the ranting and raving, guess I am in a wordy-kind-of mood. ;-)
I think trans people are so brave. Everybody judge, but too few are strong enough to live their lives as they think it should be. You are admirable, stay strong :)
R.R. Leah I have, with doctors and psychiatrists, and the treatment is to transition, you know, be trans. Why its called transgender. Get with the program.
IT'S BACK YES. as much criticism as this video receives now, at the time it was revolutionary and I think Andrew did a wonderful job with his portrayal despite not actually being trans. Regardless of that, this video is still so incredibly fun to watch by the second half with all that impossibly expressive choreography and cinematography. No matter what this video and song will be remembered as a landmark for so many individuals.

2024, down on your knees, begging us please we are don't exists I've always said 2nd song on an album will define how good it is 👌and is the best track. Best song on the Reflector album too
I don't care what you are, this song has a lot of emotion coming through it which i think everyone can respect. We've all felt like outsiders at one point or another, i guess that makes us that much more similar and human.
I'm crying. This is my favorite song, and I have been listening too it on repeat for months now... I always imagined it as we exist, meaning the LGBTQIA+ community (I have a girlfriend and I can't even hold her hand without getting made fun of) so this means a lot to me. This is beautiful.
i just discovered this song last week! but it's definitely been playing on repeat hehe... same with my girlfriend btw, we have to be kinda careful - but times are changing! good luck to you audrey
this hits so much harder now that I've been out for over a year. During the fight when she falls to the ground and shes kicked in the face, I swear my heart stops for her. I can't help but cry.
Why did I read the comments? Have I learned nothing about the internet? This is a great video and the intolerance in some people's responses ranges from regrettable to outright despicable. Excellent song and an equally impressive video.
This video speaks to me. My mom had a cousin who was homosexual and he was looked down upon by his own father. All he wanted in his life was for everyone to have a good time and for gays to have equal rights. My mom also has a friend who is a lesbian and is getting married this fall. Me and my family and friends are all for gay pride and I strive to let people know that gays exist too, and they are people.
Andrew "Always Happy" Garfield :) looks too happy in the video, but proud that he doesn't care what people think and can adapt as an actor to any role and own it with his own spin. Great song also as the song plays the story of the video as nowadays there isn't a lot of that to promote the visual art.
Wow...Arcade Fire always create such resonant music videos. Not sure anything can ever beat The Suburbs for me, but that's a close second! In a time where bands' music videos seem to be less and less thoughtful, this is very pleasing. Best music video I've seen all year (along with Muse' Panic Station)
Mike Valley Reasons why I love it: 1. The Song is great 2. Andrew Garfield is awesome! 3. The video has an important message 4. It's pissing a lot of ignorant people off(love that) Go watch another video if this offends you. Nobody wants you guys here.
Seeing the comments on this video have made me even happier that Andrew Garfield, such a prominent and relevant figure, took on this role. It's really fantastic that he decided to do this, not at the beginning or end of his career while he was desperate for a job, but right in his prime, with all the spotlight and income an actor could want - Just on SNL, a movie just out, another movie in the works. Visibility is important, and these comments have reminded me just how important it still is. The levels of ignorance that I have seen in the past couple minutes, reading these comments, have made me cringe, laugh out loud, and want to punch someone in the face. Some of these commenters are barely a half step above the type of people who would complain about women wearing pants instead of skirts or dresses. This is a great video. I think Andrew Garfield did a fantastic job, especially as a cis actor taking on a trans role. I commend Andrew Garfield for his performance, and I would like to thank him for providing a little more visibility to an oppressed group of people.
By saying that only trans people should play trans roles, doesn't that imply that only cis people should play cis roles? That only straight people should play straight roles? Saying that is kind of oppressing yourself. I don't think that the actor's personal life should matter at all here. I find this video amazing- the actor is only supporting the LGBTQA+ community!
Isn't that kind of the entire point of the job behind it though, acting? To play a type of person who is different than yourself? And no, this shouldn't extend to white actors using blackface but that is because of the history of that association, the real oppression that doing that used to indicate. But a cis person playing a trans person doesn't have that type of association.
Listen, no one is saying straight people playing trans roles should be illegal, They just want trans people to have more representation because transgendered actors are very rare in case you couldn't tell. The message is meaningless if you wont even help the ones the message is for.
that's completely different, cis actors and actresses have all of the recognition in the world. by having trans people play trans roles, it would be a lot more representative and will give the community more recognition.
@@Jason-bj3lk this is absolutely right. But for getting attention to a minority, majority should see the issue. So, when someone irrespective of gender or Sexual orientation would do it effectively, would bring attention. That's what matters... I think the scenario would change and people of any spectrum would get recognition.
I love this song and its message. My heart goes out to the families and people who were injured, killed, and traumatized by the Orlando, Florida Shooting. May God Bless and Keep them and may his face shine upon them and give them peace.
This video brought me to tears. I don't know if transgender people want to be the way they are why don't we just let them be? I think if we learn to accept and love people for their true identity the world will become more beautiful. Just my thought .. Thank you for spreading such a powerful message Arcade Fire !
We Exist.

I'm asexual and, as you now, we also get a lot of comments on that we don't actually exist and stuff, so I think that video fits the situation perfectly, not only regarding the transgender people. ^-^ Btw, happy National Coming Out day! ;D
remember being 14 and watching this video without understand nothing but at the same time understanding everything about it (if that makes any sense), years ago I came out as member of this lovely lgbtiq+ community and my heart rejoices everytime I watch this video. this song helped me to understand myself and embrace my own pride.

1000+ manpoints to Andrew. What a bold performance. Really shows what he is capable of as an actor, and as a human being. Absolutely brilliant.
I think many people in the comments don't understand the importance of videos like this. It's awesome to see anyone take a stand for the LGBT community and that's exactly what this does.
Yea, I'm all for that and everything, but cross dressers and dancing cowboys were not what I thought of when I thought of We Exist.
***** ...was hurtful to watch something different of your expectations?^^
ALAN You don't have to "turn around" and be supportive of something like this if you're religious. Religion is about loving yourself and others, forgiveness and believing in a higher power. Fundamentalists give all religious people a bad name.
I agree, but can't help think they're using the topics they touch on more for attention, rather than opening peoples minds.
Felecity Rex do you not understand the concept of acting?
I'm sitting t my desk at work trying so hard not to cry. I've been struggling with my identity a lot lately. thank you.
You are beautiful
i hope the struggle eased up on...
Garfield plays the part so well I kind of wish this was a movie

He’s great in angels in America
This is a powerful message marred with hateful comments but it just shows as far as we've come the journey ahead is a long one. Thank you Arcade Fire and Andrew Garfield for doing this video.
He's still a babe no matter WHAT his orientation is
agreed as a transwoman I feel this is dead on to how I feel for sure so powerful and its awesome that andrew had the guts to do this video with class and realness to it and not make it comical or a joke. yes its good to laugh but this is a serious song with a message. I am so glad arcade fire wrote this song and did this video and is being very respectful to the trans community and using it the right way and not making a bad stereotype. :) So awesome!!!
I want to see you on All Stars 2!
Completely Agree
Megan Rice Sexual orientation and gender identity are two totally different things, and are not interchangeable. But I get what you meant.
The ending was an actual live performance at Coachella that's the first Tim I ever heard "We Exist" and we we're listening to the lyrics then we see Andrew Garfield getting up on stage and we were just screaming! Amazing performance
wow srsly? that's coool!
That’s weird because it seemed like a dead, photoshopped art asset.
I'm super jealous.

You need to get a life of achievement instead of virtue signalling mental illness compliance

Am I to assume you are MTF? this song touches me so much. i am bisexual, part of the lgbtqa+ community.

***** didn't want to disappoint you, but it's only in your fairy tale filled head...
Nebeason What's so fairy tale about what he said? Also it's tale* not tail. xD
"This video, right here, is the future. Embrace it. Learn from it. Let it open your mind and inspire you."
Now what, preacher, should I say amen?
People are free to like what they like as long as it sells.
A beautiful video, but so sad. When she dissociates while being beaten, flying free through the air... that got me. Then at the end as she seems to go to the other side and the whole crowd is cheering her... that got me too. My daughter is trans and it's a worry, how cruel the world can be. Schwinn D. I didn't mean it in the way you though I meant it. I wasn't even comparing gay and transgender!

Favourite actor and favourite band, nothing could make me more happier! Thank you Andrew and Arcade Fire.

OMG, I'm so glad this song is back.
Haha
lolololol objecting to men having sex with young boys is 'bigotted'?
Weatherva Well, that would be a valid reason to intervene would it not? If you notice, I mentioned that in my original post. I don't think you quite understand what I mean.
As a straight person...this also means alot to me . Not a bad way or condescending way , but it encapsulates the struggles of paving the way to being the person I am born as , and being ok with it , despite what people think , not seeking THEIR approval , but my own . The music , most importantly brings up so many emotions and memories. Beautiful song , a masterpiece
This is so relevant after the Orlando mass shooting.
I wish everybody on Earth would just understand.
We should only treat each other with love.
This message is simple : No matter who you are, what you do, you exist! Hence the title "We Exist"
I agree!!!
This is beautiful. This is so heartfelt. I'm so happy they based the video on this, I wish it was popular so more people knew about it ♡ Beautiful.
Win Butler, lead singer of Arcade Fire, said this song is about a gay son (and daughter too, of course) coming out to his father. But they recorded a music video with a trans character. Then, personally, I consider this is about all of us LGBT. Cheers to us.
"Let 'em stare if that's all they can do

Don't much give a crap about the video or lyrics, I just like the tune, kinda like I like Bach, Chopin etc, no political social messages necessary

Citations for those claims? Because the APA, AMA, and about forty years of peer-reviewed scientific research say you're wrong Hell, there's more research out there claiming it's an endocrine disorder than what you claim it to be. :\
So yeah. Sources?
*****
Well, you're free to believe your pseudo-scientific idea, that's your opinion.

That transition to the concert with the instrumental. That is so bonkers. It's such an insane acoustic impression paired with the images.
Brilliant acting performance

We have gay people who play as straight people
trans people who play as cis people
Straight people who play as gay people,
how is it any different? It's acting, not reality. Just because a cis person plays a trans person doesn't mean they're mocking us, a gay person playing straight or bisexual doesn't make them fakers or trying to win "Straight brownie points"
In reality, there's many many more cis than trans people, and we have to accept that we wont be portrayed in every way we desire.
As long as it's done respectfully, I don't see any problem with it.
This really what I wanted to say, but I can't improve on it so, ditto and thanks.
You, human, are a wordsmith
thats what separates an actor from a good actor. a good actor is believable in the role. i think andrew nailed the part, he doesnt have to be trans to be convincing.
I loved this comment!!
They're walking around
Head full of sound
Acting like
We don't exist
They walk in the room
And stare right through you
Talking like
We don't exist
But we exist
Daddy it's true
I'm different from you
But tell me, why they treat me like this?
If you turned away
What would I say?
Not the first betrayed by a kiss
Maybe it's true
They're staring at you
When you walk in the room
Tell 'em it's fine
Stare if you like
Just let us through
Just let us through
They're down on their knees
Begging us please
Praying that we don't exist
Daddy it's fine
I'm used to 'em now
But tell me, why they treat me like this?
It's cause we do it like this
Maybe it's true
They're staring at you
When you walk in the room
Tell 'em it's fine
Stare if you like
Just let us through
Just let us through
Let 'em stare! Let 'em stare!
If that's all they can do!
But I'd lose my heart
If I turn away from you
Oh, daddy don't turn away
You know that I'm so scared
But will you watch me drown?
You know we're going nowhere
We know that we're young
And no shit we're confused
But will you watch us drown?
What are you so afraid to lose?
Down on my knees
Begging us please
Praying that we don't exist
You're down on your knees
Begging us please
Praying that we don't exist
We exist
We exist
We exist
We exist
Nice!
Thanks~

I'm seriously getting tired of comments on youtube. Wherever I look, hate and more hate. People seem to lose their humanity on the internet, as if their words are not aimed at real people. In real life most of them would never say these things, which it still terrifies me, cause they're still thinking it. I refuse to believe we're a species led by ignorant hate.

cannibalnomad Thanks!
I hear you. I need to quit youtube for a while I think.
EDIT:
Actually, I just found an addon/extension that disables comments on every site. Much better solution!
Hate comments are only accepted on justin beiber comment section
"Down on their knees, beggin' us please, prayin' that we don't exist" is oddly empowering for me
Wooo am I the only one who came here to see a music video by one of my favorite band, just to discover one of my favorite actor dress up like a woman and dance?

We've all felt like outsiders at one point or another, i guess that makes us that much more similar and human.
that was some awesome cinematography right there.
Still relevant to this day in our society, we exist yet we hardly survive.
I'm crying. This is my favorite song, and I have been listening too it on repeat for months now... I always imagined it as we exist, meaning the LGBTQIA+ community (I have a girlfriend and I can't even hold her hand without getting made fun of) so this means a lot to me. This is beautiful.

i'm still speechless when watching this video again.
That boy there fills me will pride... plus some other emotions which are weird and deeply confusing
Why did I read the comments? Have I learned nothing about the internet? This is a great video and the intolerance in some people's responses ranges from regrettable to outright despicable. Excellent song and an equally impressive video.
Andrew really gives his all in this vid...bravo to him.
***** it represents everyone who is lgbtqia, not just transgender
what makes you think that he is transgender? he's probably transsexual, but not transgender.
Totally straight yet this song makes me cry every time. Thank you for creating this AF
Finally this iconic video is back .Stop taking shit down RUclips or whoever !!!!
I love it :D
You love it even knowing that it is not normal?
Mike Valley Reasons why I love it:
1. The Song is great
2. Andrew Garfield is awesome!
3. The video has an important message
4. It's pissing a lot of ignorant people off(love that)
Go watch another video if this offends you. Nobody wants you guys here.
Francisco Garcia I love every reason you list above. :)
great band, great song!
omg, ANDREW😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍. He played this part perfectly, awesome, he is absolutely my favourite actor, the best🙌
I have nothing but respect for Andrew after watching the video
My God. I'm bawling at this. BRAVO Arcade Fire! Still gets me.
Increible video! Que grandes que son Arcade Fire.
Andrew garfield es simplemente MARAVILLOSO 👏 este hombre es magia pura , lo amo 💕 💖 💜 ❤️
what a great piece of art!
the music, the acting, the script. just amazing
Is it normal this song/video always makes me cry like a lot!!??
Yeah , me too, of desperation
I love this song and its message. My heart goes out to the families and people who were injured, killed, and traumatized by the Orlando, Florida Shooting. May God Bless and Keep them and may his face shine upon them and give them peace.
Beautiful song, as well as an incredible music video. Much respect to Arcade Fire and Andrew Garfield!
This video brought me to tears. I don't know if transgender people want to be the way they are why don't we just let them be? I think if we learn to accept and love people for their true identity the world will become more beautiful. Just my thought ..
Thank you for spreading such a powerful message Arcade Fire !
I did not expect to cry at the end.
2340 peoples.. Praying that we don't exist
but we exist.
We Exist.
i wish this song had more views.im very much impressed by Garfield's acting & dance moves.and of course arcade fire who never fails to surprise me.im hearing this songs after exactly 2 years.
Just discovered this awesome video. So very well done and Thank-You!
Andrew sure can move those hips.
His hips movements are better than mines UnU hahahaha
He can dance better than me :/
Hahaha so true
I'm asexual and, as you now, we also get a lot of comments on that we don't actually exist and stuff, so I think that video fits the situation perfectly, not only regarding the transgender people. ^-^
Btw, happy National Coming Out day! ;D
All on the LGBTTIQQIAAPFGPBDSM spectrum so it makes sense that you would fit in. A very moving song no matter where you stand I think.
dragonymash my son is asexual as well hard as he had. Friends sending him porn which he didn’t want
remember being 14 and watching this video without understand nothing but at the same time understanding everything about it (if that makes any sense), years ago I came out as member of this lovely lgbtiq+ community and my heart rejoices everytime I watch this video. this song helped me to understand myself and embrace my own pride.
i completely agree❤️
THIS IS SO WONDERFUL
Absolutely mesmerizing seeing Andrew Garfield in this light, it's unusual but I don't want to look away.
Por esta actuación Andrew debería estar nominado a los Oscars
This always gives me goosebumps. Such a piece of art, all of it!
Can I like this video a thousand times? This is so beautiful (and never fails to make me cry). We do exist!
