Would have been 9 years old. I wondered when I watched it if I was in any of these videos with my Mom driving around or in the store. I miss her so much. Thanks for the trip down memory lane.
I agree . I was 22 and in my prime just starting to really hit the bar scene and everything all over. Man those days were great and would kill to go back to a time before cell phones. Great video
Won't lie, I mostly watch these "old Winnipeg" videos because I'm hoping to spot my gramma driving around. At this point you'd be just as likely to spot me and some other miscreants in my old blue Ford Maverick as well. I have already had the experience of spotting her on youtube once - I had no idea, but there's a video on here about the McIntyre Block and she's having her fortune told. So now I pine for another hit.
Interesting video. The other day I was describing to my kids how the lane direction change lights used to work on the old Main/Norwood bridges. Now I can show them this video so they can see for themselves.
This was probably taken in the afternoon rush hour, since the middle lane was red-X so it was reversed outbound. The 3.58m (11'9") side clearance had to be so challenging, since many trucks surely were clipped by the hanging pillar over the curb lane - it wasn't built to 1980s road width standards. As it was, 4.1m (13'5") - the general clearance - was quite marginal for large trucks and it was not easy to bypass that corridor without taking the Perimeter.
One thing I had immediately checked is the old defunct rail line parallel to St James. I'm a sucker for trains. IIRC about the lane lights, St. James had them too... probably to aide traffic from the Arena and Stadium. Green paint on light standards were so vibrant. Too bad they rust easily once they used salt on the roads during winter. Disraeli Bridge might've used the same paint. That went brown for years!
I live down by the Legislature and have always wondered what used to be in the vacant lot at the SE corner of Kennedy and Assiniboine. Those buildings must have been torn down sometime in the 90’s or early 2000’s.
Thank You for this I Lived in Winnipeg 1980 to 87 and still miss it out there was nice seeing again as I remember Winnipeg and alot of the places I went
Sure, the city is newer now, again, more so since the 1960's, but those years were more less fast pace, stress-less, and just good ole simpler times. I would give ANY money just to go back when, and live it again :D
Can we stop at Saan or Macleod's so I can get better swim trunks? Nevermind, let's just head straight to Skinner's Wet 'n Wild. No? Bah... but it's summer. Well we're downtown, let's go to Magicland. I wanna beat Narc on 40 quarters worth of gameplay! and on the way back can we stop at Pick-a-flick, I wanna rent Police Academy 6! Why notttttttttt.... Well can we at least stop at Sam The Record Man? I wanna get the Prince soundtrack to Batman! It's Batmania! Why are we still in the car??? Now quick. Pick up a pencil and a piece of paper to write down which error, I repeat which error Astro made on purpose...
Wait... I know the mistake. Magicland had free play there. Pay by the hour. I remember they had a dealer was $3.50 from 9 a.m. to noon and one day where there was no school I went there and would you believe it I was actually bored by about 11 and left early.
@@nardpuncher Good guess, but no. I said "40 quarters worth" because it's an absurd amount of quarters to spend on one game, and would only make sense to do if it was unlimited. But I can see how the wording could come across the other way. The mistake was that Macleod's was a hardware store, they wouldn't have sold swim trunks.
Born in ‘71 and left in ‘89 to spend a winter in Banff…still in Banff! Been back ONCE in 35 years. Let’s just say out West is a little more peaceful and cleaner…😂
My god its hard to even IMAGINE this once existed AT ALL, let alone less than 30 years ago. Degeneracy, poverty, 3rd world immigrants have absolutely destroyed the city and country as a whole. Times like this were so calm, peaceful, crime free, affordable, AFFORDABLE HOUSING and transportation! Look how clean the streets are! No homeless, drunks, Indian truck drivers mowing pedestrians down or causing major traffic issues.

You sir were the same age as me, :D Watching this makes me respect the past even more than ever before :D

Winnipeg offered a simpler life for sure, than Houston, Texas where I am now. I grew up in Winnipeg and went to Shaftesbury High School between 88-91.

The skyline looks very different now, also so much cleaner back then
great video ! i recognise all the places and it brings wonderful memories.
Wow Winterpeg looks exactly the same but older cars back then!

Ten months later I moved to Winnipeg June 1st 1990.
Very true story

I love it more!

Ahhhh, a time when paint on the road was cancerous but it was alright! I still love this city

Winnipeg is an absolute sh1t hole now. Has been for no less than 10 years and constantly stooping to deeper lows.
I want to wish the cameraman all the best with his epilepsy. Get better soon.
I can remember when there were people downtown.
0:16 ooh the apartments I used to deliver papers to a few years after this was filmed
It is now 2022 and Portage Ave. Is still under construction.
clear skies and +30 that day according to the weather archies. Probably was at Lester Beach
Wow a much simpler time,!!!
I remembers Mothers. Great place to go and trade sports cards.
0:58 that 73 Ford hydro truck might be the same one used in the movie Trucks, made in 97.
Very cool!
Lived in motel 75 for 6months in 1978 ,went home to Scotland, would love to see it again, loved Canada ❤
No vagrants at the Legislature, much cleaner city than now.
😢
sweet and clean unlike today
Video ended just before it got the my old condo on Edmonton St.
201 Portage is just under construction. I thought it was there around '87 already.
Does anyone remember the old velodrome around Empress? Maybe am dating muself!
Those MCI Classics were brand new then. Only one captured here.
@0:24 one of my favourite places!!!
2:00 I think they're just finishing that road up Apr 2024
Peak Winnipeg
Wow, I’m a month or two away from from being born at the Woman’s Hospital. Also my maiden name is Olson as well

Totally. No cell phones, hitting up the bars downtown . I just turned 22 as my bday is August 23 . Just slower and less stress back then
Ohh for sure! Days actually felt longer....and not rushed, like these days from AIs to horrible bosses, 😅
thx...

2:00 What street, anybody?
Loved the video but I would have loved to see sights in the st vital end of the city
There is editing software available that will stabilize the video.
4:03 no one selling pot in front of Mothers it seems. lol
Wow, it looks no different

A narration would have been better than music.
not much has changed in downtown winnipeg, looks pretty much the same just way more homeless now
Interesting , however the goofy music ruined it for me . And no using mute doesn't do it for me .
I'm so conditioned to seeing people asking for money on street corners in this city that I thought that cop was a vagrant at first glance. 1:00
Same old boring crap city nothing has changed except the cars 😂
Budbug and roach capital of Manitoba. Potholes that destroy cars. Stabbings for no reason on visitors.
