I had almost forgotten about those silly anti-fog stickers on the car windows. My dad still used them into the late 70s. Lots of awesome memories watching this. Thanks so much.
I was10 years old in 66 I remember the March 4th blizzard . My parent's had a 62 and 64 Chevy over the years , these cars take me back . As another comment states , the neon lights , wow . Thank you this was extraordinary .
United Army Surplus @ Memorial Blvd and Portage Ave. Long gone as are all the buildings in that area. The Hudson Bay store is just to screen left..which is also vacant now. @2:50 Heading north over the Donald street Bridge into downtown. @4:56 Henderson highway heading north, Browns Drugs killer neon sign is still there as is the pharmacy. @9:56 Chans Cafe on Main Street was THE place to eat, mingle and catch all the great bands of the day upstairs. This reel is a "reel" gem!!
Advertised in the window of the Safeway store were Art Linkletter's Encyclopedia for Boys and Girls. I got the whole set when I was a kid and still have them. I used to read those cover to cover.
Cool the Birt's Saddlery (2 white horses) is still there today I think. That building was the first photography studio around 1880. Real wild west history.
Yes and then when you rolled down the window, they would crack and splinter, I remember. My dad had a 46' Ford and the heater would not keep the front window clear of frost. Had them there too.@@petervitti9
Brings back a lot of memories as a youngster growing up in Wpg late 60s-early 70s. The Genie natural gas sign. Long gone companies like BA and Roco gas stations. How about Security Storage? And the cigarette ads. The old Safeway logo. And, yes the frost shields on cars. Remember my dad having them on his '62 Fairlane. That '65 Impala convertible would be worth quite a bit today. People also didn't seem to be in a hurry like nowadays.
You can really see how they just kept expanding and widening roads with only cars in mimd when you look at old film from the 60s to 90s. Were only just begining the undoing of decades that made the car hellscape we live in now. To be fair most cities in NA did this. Luckily a lot of central Winnipeg neighborhoods are still very walkable and livable, and every year we take back little pieces from the cars and improve the lives of people who live here.
interesting: that super-duper city bus appears to be no typically poxy model manufactured by Brill .. it looks GM'ish, which appear forever the sturdier

Winter in a "Prairie Town", brings back some unpleasant memories for me !

Turn 65 today, and this is such a fantastic reminder of the way Canada looked when I was a kid!
No, I believe at 2:50 its heading North over the Donald street bridge actually.
@@jfn482 I stand corrected, thank you.
Just put boards up all around the downtown.

Fun fact: Art was born in Saskatchewan, a prairie boy.
@@javierdenardo2607 Right you are ! I did not know that. I just googled it now....born in Moose Jaw . Thanks ! An interesting fact !
What awesome footage.

7:45 i vividly remember that natural gas sign, with the genie, on the right as starting over the river via the disraeli freeway.
Frost Sheilds . . . . Lots of people have never heard of them.
Grew up during the sixties. Hated frost shields! We kept them on during the summer. Yellowed. My dad encased the car seats in plastic seat covers.

This is an amazing trip back!! Love your posts!! Thanks for posting
the videos from the 80's i recognize a lot of stuff, but very little from the 60's
0:60 - Portage Ave and Colony Street - the Army Surplus Store... it is now a University of Winnipeg Students Association Building
Even back then, there were two seasons. Winter and construction
2:36 is River and Donald heading towards Confusion Corner, I'm pretty sure.
3:33 Ellice, North of what is now Portage Place

6:15, City Hydro central heat plant.
Temperature between -12 and -33. Yep nothing has changed.
Talking about Global warming in Winnipeg is a really tough gig.
I would think this footage is from 1968 based on the Chevy Impala year. Grest find.
The one with two sets of small round taillights is a 65 .
Lol... Donald Street essentially looks the same
Before the big blizzard?

It is another make of the time, Twin or Fageol-Twin.
So who is J.W Martin?
The lights are great. Now it’s so generic.
For those in California Mr Martin was plugging in his Monty 2:00. It was an electric car invented by Monty Hall.
I think I recognized route 90, Sherbrook and/ or Maryland
