    Great to see a reading list on youtube that isn't just the same books as every other person - some great reads in here and some books that I would love to read in future. Keep it up :)

    Love that you’re reading an eclectic mix and classics, it’s hard to find booktubers who aren’t reading all the modern chick lit or booker prize lists etc.

    This is such a wonderful list. It’s the first review that I’ve watched that mentions Richard Wright’s “Native Son.” An amazing book that made me want to become a literature major. Thank you for the content and wishing the channel much success.

    Wow, I'm South African and did not expect to see Coetzee on booktube. Really unique book taste, awesome stuff! (Also his surname's pronounced 'coot' just said faster like the 'oo' is shorter and 'sear' like searing a steak)

    Loved the thoughtful reviews and the books read. "Dirt is matter out of place." interesting quote. Thanks for video. Not sure about the horror but maybe you can convince me. Would recommend "The Bear" by Phillips. Great short read, more current fiction oriented

      @@Ihearbooks Thank you! All i’ll say is simulated horror can be cathartic… but its definitely not for everyone haha. Ive been needing to try some more current fiction - will definitely check out The Bear

    I agree on The Bell Jar and have similar difficulties with books centering on mental health issues, I always expect to love these books based on premise and popularity but then they just don’t connect the way I want them to and fall flat for me

    I've had bad experiences, personally, stacking books like that in vertical piles. The paperbacks have a tendency to warp slightly, but perceptibly, from the weight of the other books. Also, solid picks and thoughts. You should check out Borges if you enjoyed Marquez, if you haven't gotten to him already

    I just picked up that copy of Interpretation of Dreams and the cover is fantastic.Also, you know you can read philosophers from the last 300 years and not thousands of years ago lol. They tend to be more fun.

      @@KcIsReading Any postmodernists worth reading other than Foucault? Also, Jung is a nice middle ground between philosophy and psychology if you're into the darker but ultimately transformative stuff.

    Coetzee is a great writer but Heart of the Country is one of the few of his that I haven’t read yet - must get to it soon. Have you read Waiting for the Barbarians, Michael K or Disgrace?
    I’m not surprised that you enjoyed Garcia Marquez’ prose - it’s so rich! But I do wonder why this gets marketed as a love story- for me it portrays love as a disease and it seems to mostly be about the loss of the local culture through ever increasing influences from Europe. The rich doctor only seeing value in the culture of Europe - even his death has echoes of Flaubert!

    • @KcIsReading
      @KcIsReading  3 месяца назад +1

      @@ianp9086 That’s precisely why I think its dangerous! Was really confronted with my own temptation to hope this would be a love story, despite how increasingly frightening it was to see how both Ariza and Fermina’s lives were turning out.
      And this was my first Coetzee - gotta check out more
