It is stunning. I love the direction Jaguar has been going lately. Their cars really have a personality and style unique to the brand. This car looks so unconventional, especially the rear end.
I saw a review of this on Evo's channel, they tested the available engine models of this and they all agreed that the V6 was the one to go for over the V8. Handled better, and drove smoother. ( a little remeniscent of the Etype which was favoured more for its earlier v6 engines over its v12 later models )
I had a chance to take one (V8) on a unleashed drive today. My god, this car is everything the reviewer says and more. The car in dynamic mode is loud, crude, and hella fun!! I never in my life would have even looked at a Jaguar... now I want one!!
It's astonishing. It really is... astonishing. When I heard that the top range model of this F-type Jag costs around 90.000 pound, I thought those numbers were overestimated, but after seeing this review and just how wonderful this car looks and what's under the bonnet (forget the comparison to the 911) as well the features it has, I think this car is truly brilliant, worth the money it costs and deserves the title to be the successor of the great E-type Jag.
I was in London the other day & there was a bloke in a black F-Type pulling out of a road in Park Lane & as he drove onto the main road, my God!! The noise, it sounded biblical! An amazing sound :-D Really woke me up as he properly cained it. A good moment.
Looks like Jag has done a good job here, pushing all out performance with their productions. Passenger seat looks little isolated and lonely looking at the arch coming from dash towards gear and arm rest area, apart from that neat interior neat and aggressive exterior design, looks like it has good handling and performance of the engine sits very well with the car. Thumbs up in all for sure!
I couldn't agree more; definitely a (very) optimistic claim. I have no doubt that the F-type is a grand car, but the 911 Turbo (especially 997.2) is really quite an elite car in terms of all measures of performance!
This is one Jag that gives Aston Martin a run for its money when it comes to a beauty contest. And for those of you griping for more hp, I'm willing to bet, the execs are contemplating an R performance version.
He means in-gear accleration, which the f-type is as quick as the 911 turbo, and the f-type is slower to 60 is due to the lack of grip as it is rear wheel drive instead of 4 wheel drive
There is more to it than that if you're talking about track performance. That's what I'm referring to. For whatever reasons, the Jag cannot hang with even the base 911 on the track. See Tiff's track battle video.
Bro been telling folks the same thing I think the V8S goes head to head with the Carrera Jaguar say they releasing a quicker one an F-Type R to match the Turbos I suppose!
I talked with a Jaguar representitive at a Moto Expo car show in London. He said that only Indian thing is the money. TATA were like "here's the money, now go off and show what you can do with it." And this is the result - the F-Type. Jaguar is here to stay as quint-essential British car.
Well everyone has their way of thinking ;) If you have noticed, JLR was going through big losses before going in the hands of TATA and now its doing amazing. Last 2 years, the company has earned tremendous profits. So I assume TATA engineers too had a good role and support in that. I belong from Dubai :D the company is doing great here too.
He's sort of right. He just failed to mention that it's the 997 Turbo that does it in 4.2 sec. So I guess the F type would have been more relevant 6 years ago on that front. Still a great car i think. Hat tip to Jaguar
There is reason why minor changes of exterior design in Porsche department are used, its the true tradition of design that they are trying to keep. However as mentioned here, justification of price does matter, as it is all the greatest engineering and technology involved in the heart of the car it self, engine dynamics and more for the car to perform, Porsche is expensive but is a standout over Jag and many other in more ways than one perhaps that is the reason of price difference compared.
I think the Z06 is the one. It's got plenty of character, performance, it looks and sounds great...but its rear suspension set-up was invented by Obadiah Elliot of London in 1804. Come on guys, get with the project!
i understand what you're saying, but every reviewer that has driven this car, has said that it is a great chassis. too many people are worried about numbers nowadays, that's all.
I can't deny its beautiful, but it bears a striking (while updated of couse) resemblance to the Maserati GranSport Spyder from the mid 2000's. No matter, they're both beautiful anyway
Jags are very dependable. The Jags that I have owned (and still do) had no serious problems at all. My Tahoe (A GM product) has cost me a fortune in repair costs. Same with the three Cadillac STS' that I owned. I was a GM customer for years but they were too problematic. I drove a Jag and fell in love with it and never looked back. I still like GM but I can't afford the maintenance.
Yeah... that comparison was ridiculous! 911 Turbo is on a different level of performance, but exclusivity, feelings and emotions put everything in doubt between the two
Of course, it is one of the very few video reviews uploaded so far. This is the week of uploading. In a minute evo TV and Chris Harris are sending theirs. But, yes, Sutcliffe is, as always, great for reviewing. British car or not.
To be honest Steve has been very positive driving different Porsche and other sports cars. And the kinda British cars Steve drives are the top on the line. So no surprise if he is positive to those cars. (I'm not British)
True, but Jag are selling it for £80,000 which is 911 carreera money and Jaguar say they will release a F-Type R to match the likes of the Turbos later on. Hope to see which 1 will really be quick!!
Yes JLR is owned by India now, TATA , one of the biggest company in terms of revenue the world. but when tata bought the company, they didn't really change the staff and workers of the company. Indian and british engineers have worked together to make this car. And its not unfortunate cause the company is doing great in the world market.
Guys, this car is not to be compared with super sports cars, it should be compared with super-sport convertible muscle sedans like CLK and 6 series Convertible wise. It can never go faster than a Porsche 911 Turbo and it's not supposed to. It's for your weekend enjoying cruising through long roads.
"The clock would have you believe that a Turbo S is quicker to 62 and as fast to 100mph, but, as ever, the clock lies. This car is different-world fast to the Turbo S." - Harris on GT2 RS, which, remember, is a lot slower (by about as much as 0,5 s) to 60 than a Turbo S. I therefore support Steve's opinion. One needs to understand that 0-60 is not everything.
Actually it's owned by Tata but is still built in the same factory by the same people in England. The owner of Tata loved Jaguars as a kid and bought them as his trophy company. All he does is give them money for research. That's why they are doing so well.
A rear wheel drive car is never going to match a 4 wheel drive car in that statistic however when you consider 911 Turbo Cab = 286 BHP per ton F Type Cab = 296 BHP per ton you can see where he is coming from, this car is quick!
@thornrev: The first F-Types to be released are simply not comparable with a '911 Turbo' and should be compared with similarly spec'd & priced cars. The new Jaguar F-Type looks fast & good value in comparison with similarly-priced Porsche 911s, as official figures quoted in my post above prove. Jag are known to be working on hotter versions, possibly including a more track-orientated version with 600+bhp. Then there's the desirablility factor. The new Porsche 911 doesn't look 'new' at all.
I could be wrong but i think in that test that was just the F Type V6 and not the top of the range V8 Supercharged version reviewed here. I agree the Turbo would be quicker than this but for the price of a Turbo you could by this and a brand new M3! and at the end of the day this car will rarely see the track
I drove the vehicle, the first in North America at Circuit of the Americas. The F-Type is everything they say it is. Go drive this little beast then comment.
Considering that Porsche has been working on the 911 for 20 years and this is the first year of the F Type I'd say that Jag has done well. As far as looks the 911 can't hang. Jag is going to have to put it on a diet if it's going to hang with one of the best sports cars in the world. I wonder how the V8 F Type will do? Jag claims that it's faster than the Carrera S! My guess is that it's only faster in a straight line but we shall see.
I don't think anyone that is interested in buying a Jag is the least bit impressed that Porsche has a better track time. I bought my XKRS because I love Jaguars. I could have bought the Carrera S for bragging rights but that would be silly. When track times are that close it really comes down to the driver. A set of tires can make or break three seconds.
Jaguar has surpassed all expectations for me. This is a true successor to the mighty E-Type. Anyone who doesn't agree please try to find a bad word said about this car.
And who is saying 997 turbo does 3.2 seconds, it was a figure tested by Motor Trends, the official time is about 3.7 sec with manual transmission and 3.4 with PDK. If F type had dual clutch, it could easily reach 3.6 second range. And besides F type V8 S is not contender against 911 turbo, more like carrera. Probably the F type R or R-S will go into that category.
That's the point. They play in totally different leagues. But this biased piece of a so-called reviewer claimed that the F-Type is "911 turbo fast", which it certainly isn't.
I don't think he stated specifically which 911, people. Just that the F-type was in the same realm. So trying to hold out for the the TOP top 911, is more than a little fanboyish. Besides the C7 "Stingray" will do 0-60mph in under 4sec with only 450hp. Still the F-type should be a welcome addition to the fold.
Ok it, we are all thinking it. It looks awesome, just awesome. The price and the v8 option I think are poor moves. One it's way to expensive for what it is and I see more going for the XK rather than this V8 version. The main engine that I think is the key is the 3L supercharged V6. Problem is its not offered with a 6S manual which I think a lot of people who will go for that engine(90%) will be disappointed in that aspect. Other than that it is great.
You don't think I would take the Jaguar over the 911 because of the V8, looks and interior because the 911 Turbo has a better power-to-weight ratio? That's weird, I didn't think you could see inside my head. Also, I believe you are wrong. Porsche 911 Turbo is 480 BHP and 1585 KG, whereas the F-Type 510 BHP and 1665 KG. The Porsche's power-to-weight is slightly under the F-Types assuming I have calculated it correctly.
I'd gladly trade the odd 0.1 of a second's hypothetical acceleration for style and presence. If you don't like the new Jaguar F type I suggest you stick with your Beetle's!
Performance-wise Jaguar is about 10 years late though. The F-Type isn't even close to "911 Turbo fast" as he claimed. More like base model 911 fast. This thing needs 4.2 seconds from 0-60. Even an old, pre-facelift 997 could hit 60 in 3,7 secs effortlessly. The facelifted 997 w/ PDK could do it in about 3 secs flat and the new generation turbo will undoubtedly hit 60 in under 3 seconds. Same story when it comes to handling. It does look pretty damn good though.
Great looking and sounding car. But too heavy even with the alu construction and no MT or DCT. I hope they will do some weight trimming! And 0-60 is slower than the 991S (not that I would care about that).
911 turbo "dull"? I think you've watched a little too much Top Gear. The thing with the 911 turbo is that it's not only one of the fastest cars out there, but also one of the most fun to drive. That's why it has such huge success each and everytime a new one comes out. Search for "Jaguar F-type vs Porsche 911 Cabriolet - Tiff Track Battle" on RUclips for a pretty interesting, and for once completely unbiased, track comparison.
You're wrong though. All engineering for Jaguar Landrover is done in the West Mids. Tata has more of a "hands off" approach than Ford had. Ford dictated too greatly what they thought Jaguar LR should be; Tata sees it as a long-term investment and obvioulsy aims to see a return on that.
this is absolutely one of the most beautiful cars I've ever seen.
It is stunning. I love the direction Jaguar has been going lately. Their cars really have a personality and style unique to the brand. This car looks so unconventional, especially the rear end.

Thanks Steve. Your reviews are amongst my favorites!
someone who appreciates interior quality and luxury more than epic performance
I was in London the other day & there was a bloke in a black F-Type pulling out of a road in Park Lane & as he drove onto the main road, my God!! The noise, it sounded biblical! An amazing sound :-D Really woke me up as he properly cained it. A good moment.
I happen to be a Porsche fan, but that is a good comment about what really matters in driving for everyone but racing drivers.
I got to see this car at the Canadian Internationale auto show and it is amazingly, stunningly, beautiful
My man Steve Sutcliffe!!! Let him do all the vids!!!!
Definitely one of the prettiest cars at the Sydney Motor Show.
best f-type video i have seen thus far... great job!!
I stood by one and the images simply dont do justice. With the black wheels and in red it is beautiful
He means in-gear accleration, which the f-type is as quick as the 911 turbo, and the f-type is slower to 60 is due to the lack of grip as it is rear wheel drive instead of 4 wheel drive
Best looking Jag ever.
thats a relief now the comparisons
early E-Types had straight sixes, but yes, they were favoured over the later V12 which was designed more with the american market in mind
Ordered a 911 have you?, HA!, this thing is beyond epic, looks, performance, sound, all of it. It's taken them a while, but Jag is back on form!
There is more to it than that if you're talking about track performance. That's what I'm referring to. For whatever reasons, the Jag cannot hang with even the base 911 on the track. See Tiff's track battle video.
Love your reviews my friend, thank you for a great drive in this new Jag.
As someone who has driven the F-type and the 911 turbo, Porsche needs to back to the drawing board because the new JAAAG is amazing.
I can't think of many cars I'd want more than one of these
i like how its so compact.. great for the city
Agreed, especially when I'm exceeding around 130-140 mph I get more excited knowing I'm exceeding 200 kph
Simply the Perfect Jag
What i say is Steve is a proper car tester.
Bro been telling folks the same thing I think the V8S goes head to head with the Carrera Jaguar say they releasing a quicker one an F-Type R to match the Turbos I suppose!
You must be a German car fan. Jaguars have come a long way.
Im happy that they are happy!
Chris Harris is going to have an absolute field day with this car! Great review btw Mr. Sutcliffe.
England makes the most elegant and beautiful cars in the world...
I talked with a Jaguar representitive at a Moto Expo car show in London. He said that only Indian thing is the money. TATA were like "here's the money, now go off and show what you can do with it." And this is the result - the F-Type. Jaguar is here to stay as quint-essential British car.

i understand what you're saying, but every reviewer that has driven this car, has said that it is a great chassis. too many people are worried about numbers nowadays, that's all.

Wow, fair enough. Ok that changed from the end of last year. Was something about the 3-series tourer, technical issues or something.
Yeah... that comparison was ridiculous! 911 Turbo is on a different level of performance, but exclusivity, feelings and emotions put everything in doubt between the two
Jaguar has class.
I like the copper bits on the paddles, engine start button
Of course, it is one of the very few video reviews uploaded so far. This is the week of uploading. In a minute evo TV and Chris Harris are sending theirs. But, yes, Sutcliffe is, as always, great for reviewing. British car or not.

Another positive British car review from autocar? Shocking.
you guys need to sort out your video rendering quality, 1080p mode looks very compressed

A 911 turbo is 4wd and rear engine'd. It's always going to have an advantage off the line. I would like to know how the 60-120 times stack up.
I can't wait to see a hardtop version, maybe an R or RS kit
Actually it's owned by Tata but is still built in the same factory by the same people in England. The owner of Tata loved Jaguars as a kid and bought them as his trophy company. All he does is give them money for research. That's why they are doing so well.

Gotta love the F-Type!
Is it available with a manual transmission too, or just an automatic?
@thornrev:

if chris harris is reviewing this car, i know he will love it!!
I liked the review, but would have liked to have seen the other variants. I prefer the sound of the V6 F-type personally.
I could be wrong but i think in that test that was just the F Type V6 and not the top of the range V8 Supercharged version reviewed here. I agree the Turbo would be quicker than this but for the price of a Turbo you could by this and a brand new M3! and at the end of the day this car will rarely see the track
2013 Turbo has not been released yet, where did you get this information from? Wiki article doesn't even mention a turbo model.
How did you find it when you drove it?
Stupidly good looking car. Would be fun to rent for a weekend along the coast.
I drove the vehicle, the first in North America at Circuit of the Americas. The F-Type is everything they say it is. Go drive this little beast then comment.

Welcome back to a proper British sports car
It sounds like it may be the best British sports car ever ?
AWD says nothing about power to weight ratio, actually it adds weight. But I'd choose the turbo over the jag as well!
I don't think so, because my Mustang is still front engine RWD, but the IRS will def add some weight, just not THAT much.
Can't wait to know!
steve is the man. Cut him some slack
edgo45 the v8 version is 1665kg which calculates to 3670lbs .. not sure where you got 4900lbs from.
I don't think anyone that is interested in buying a Jag is the least bit impressed that Porsche has a better track time. I bought my XKRS because I love Jaguars. is there a hard top version?

Manual box has been hinted at by senior Jag management. Fingers crossed.
Great looking and sounding car. But too heavy even with the alu construction and no MT or DCT. I hope they will do some weight trimming! And 0-60 is slower than the 991S (not that I would care about that).
911 turbo "dull"? I think you've watched a little too much Top Gear.

its all about the driver but agree with you totally car of the year 2013?
Steve do u reckon this V8 f type would easily trounce any Aston martin out there? I have a feeling it would.
Judging by the way he was talking about the performance of the car in the couple of minutes, i was expecting it to have at least
totally agree.
fantastic car.
the rollover hoops need to be wider!
Since there are many comments in regards to Porche vs Jag, type in Jaguar F-type vs Porsche 911 Cabriolet - Tiff Track Battle
