@@DTArchive Idk I feel like the two newest at least have a couple bangers while the rest I never bother with. I like the opener and closer of D.O.T. Just hearing that Portnoy is bringing in a lot of his own thoughts and opinions on all the various elements is more than enough for me to know this album is going to slap.
i completely agree with Jordans' point about something being missing without Mike. I always judge based on live and I did see them 2 or 3 times without Mike (and I saw the Winery Dogs twice and I saw them about a dozen times before mike left) and there was definitely a personality to the band that was not there without MP. MM was a great drummer, you cant take away from that, but there was a hole.
Well he walked out on the band just when they were going to start their album. I would’ve preferred that Mangini remained with the band, he was brilliant!
It would be great if they made the part 2 of "A Mind Besides itself" with Mike's return, just like they released Metropolis Part 2 at the door of the "New Millennium"... Just connecting things like him ; )
I agree that's an issue, but it probably wasn't Mangini's decision. They decided to go full bore into playbacks and backing tracks, and you need to use clicks to make sure everything stays in time.
Yeah, Jordan, there was something missing without Portnoy. There was no egotistical, overbearing drummer who felt the need to control every aspect of the band. There were no stupid Cookie Monster vocals that destroyed parts of their songs, i.e. Count of Tuscany and Nightmare To Remember. There were no varying setlists on a nightly basis, which the fans think are cool but are very difficult on a band known for their complex songs. There were no sloppy drum performances on a nightly basis. But we got our buddy back. I am starting to realize the gave Mangini the same treatment they gave Derek.

Totally agree about the conceptual element. Mike brings something to the table that goes beyond „just“ the music. Really excited for this one!
Portnoy was the man who made prog more soulful and sound less stereotypical.
If Jordan thinks we're going to freak out, I think we will 😆

Mangini is a better drummer and Portnoy's fills were going stale. Hopefully he doesn't spam the same rehashed fills...

Mike was ALWAYS a drummer of DT!
It took them more than 13 years to understand that Mike is the soul of the band

Absolutely. I enjoyed DT's albums and live shows with Mike Mangini, but there was an element missing. For sure.

I'm not expecting anything extraordinary simply because DT is held down by LaBrie's current limitations.
Metropolis part. 3
Finally Home
Just what they were saying about the last one, so we'll see...
