First Chinese Special of the new year and another spec-monster! These Starkings pack a punch with their 4Hz, high beat movement, sapphire etc etc. Not bad for less than a fifty, eh? Cheers, JOMW.
If a start up company created a watch with the same spec you wouldn't balk at paying the thick end of $300, and the manufacturing would likely be in Hong Kong!
I believe the movement in these Starkings is the Dixmount Gaungzhou 28,800bph DG4813, there basicilly a modified DG2813 very popular with reps and homage watches most of the time there unregulated so it can be a lottery with accuracy replacements are around $50 US ..........just my 10 pennies worth!
Looks awesome, but very similar to the Cadisen you convinced me to buy on singles day, so I will hold off on this one. Thanks for making videos Jodi, I recommend you to lots of people!
They should make a field watch! With those specs it would beat everything! In my opinion it could use a bit more water resistance (at least 75m or 100m, but I don't know any watches that have a WR of 75m) and maybe a simple leather trap and a better looking dial.
Did you catch the price of the watch? Get real and pull your head out of your ass.
Jody, the movement is DG4813 High Beat (25 jewels), there is 3Hz one with the same name, but it's 21 jewels.
It's very reliable thing and it will probably last fairly long time (upwards of 5 years w/o servicing).
Thanks Martin!
Nice review Jody, I've checked out these watches at Long Island Watch and just picked up a 38mm Seagull 1963 Airforce re-addition piece with the acrylic crystal from Mark and some say it's not from Seagull but that movement is for sure and keeps brilliant time for the price, a hand wound column-wheel chronograph movement that once upon a time Venus Watch made the caliber 175 and sold all the tooling to the Chinese Government way back in 1958 (I think) and if Seagull didn't make it maybe Red Star did but the watch is a little treasure and proud to own a Chinese made piece and now want a Soviet from around the same period.. Sorry for going off topic!
Trevor
I have the previous black dial Starking and my experience is similar to yours, so inconsistency doesn't seem to be a burning issue with this company. Not sure that the added character is a plus in this case (although the date window frame certainly is); whilst the other one bore more than a passing resemblance to some models in Longines' Elegant range where this one is getting its styling cues from is a bit of a mystery. Aside from a fairly horrible crown I have no complaints and feel like I got my money's worth and then some.
There is no doubt that these Chinese specials are great value for money. In particular the Starking seems to be in particular great spec. But in my own personal opinion specs don't make a watch. It's how it makes you feel, and that's why all my Chinese specials Inc 2 Starking have been sold or are being sold. Yet my 3 Seiko 5s with much less impressive specs are all in my rotation. But as I've always said each to their own. Great watch, just not for me. Great review as always 👍
I wonder how good the working conditions are for those who assembled them.
4 months with the watch...white dial version...
Still looks great and it fulfils the role of a low-key dress watch! It keeps surprisingly accurate time… At least this particular one… 5 to 6/ seconds to the plus daily… Checked against my casio world time...Even like the bracelet however the butterfly clasp doesn’t allow for any type of micro adjustment… And it always seems like my wrist falls in the slightly too tight or slightly too loose range when removing or adding the last link… This watch would get more rest time if it fit just a little bit better. I’ve ordered a couple of dress watch leather straps...Of course those are coming from China to so I’m still waiting😂😂😂
Thanks for coming up with these reviews.
I bought the gold with white dial version. Love it. Decent quality. Thanks for the review.
That blue one is such a beauty!
Finally picked up the AM0184, black dial on the bracelet. Loving it so far, though would prefer the date window at 6:00 (or better yet, no date). My third Starking! Can’t get over the value on these beauties from the Orient.
Chinese Specials are the best! Currently wearing my Guanqin 😉
wearing a Guanqin as well. the one that looks like the Tissot Le Locle.
Great stuff .My Chinese I regulated myself is still running worn within 5 seconds a day! Quartz time as I nickname it( well you get my drift!) Star king and Cadisson should have pitches at Basel!!!!!!! Cheers,Len.
Thanks for the StarKing reviews. Based on this review I put out some specific hints for my birthday and my daughter picked out an AM0269 for me with a sunburst blue dial. By no means the highest quality watch in my collection, but most definitely the best quality for the money. There's really no close second. This thing is amazing for less than 50 bucks. It's be amazing for twice that price.
I am glad to bring us these little nuggets of joy from deep within the Internet. I would never notice watch existed without your channel.
Starking offers very good value for your money. I own the previous version with a black sun burst dial. Talking about the movement - it stoped completely after setting the time. I’ve had already contacted the seller when it started to move after two or three weeks... 🤔
I bought one of those starking, it runs at +/- 200 seconds a day, and no matter how you regulate it's stills inaccurate because it varies depending on the winding level a lot. So money straight to the trash.
It could be the hairspring is sticky so coils are sticking causing it to gain beyond normal limits. I can't imagine it would be anything major to resolve this issue. This movement appears capable of keeping reasonable time. Not sure about long term reliability though😬 or sadly you have been at the hands of Chinese quality control and have a 🍋😟
I finally bought the previous Starking you reviewed - based on your review. (White dial / SS bracelet.) Because I saw it down to $46.50. I thought I would pull the trigger since it was over $50 before - closer to 60?, and then 2 days later it's under $42. Grrrr. Still waiting on it.
I bought a Starking on 11.11 last year. Been wearing it for a few months now. It has a +10.5 s/day. My issue is, the watch ticks funny if you lay it on its side. You can actually see the sec hand stuck and jump. Other than that, it's spot on nice and accurate.
It's called "Indirect seconds." The second hand is placed outside of the power delivery train (going train) of the movement so there is no inherent mechanical force on it preventing the hand from bouncing around due to backlash(the play gears have to have in order to not bind). They put a spring force on the gear to keep it from jiggling, but that is often out of adjustment, so you get the stuttering. It's a common problem on watches.
Got the skeleton staking because i love the look of them
Great way to start off 2019.
Always excited to see what your next discovery from China is...keep'em coming!
Those watches don't look like 50$ watches. Insane value for the money.
not bad, shame there isn't a blue dial/silver case version.
Exactly my thought. That yellow gold isn’t doing it for me.
I just bought a Grand Seiko, a couple Orient Stars, and I own Rolexes. But I think I will get this one too. No hate for these Chinese watches anymore after watching your channel.
I like the pie dish case, and I like that watch. And I like it that much I've just bought one. Thanks Jody
Great review! I have the blue model and it’s absolutely gorgeous!!!
I have the blue and gold one....really love with it until now
Love Ali Express best deals on Chinese watches period,I got two star King watches both from Ali Express and they both give me plus two seconds a day, had them both for about two years and they both give me plus two seconds a day still no problems within those two years of ownership either, I also have a loreo day date hulk diver that's been giving me plus two seconds a day for two years straight with zero problems as well, it just irks me that Jody here has been getting star King and loreo duds that have been giving him plus ten to plus fourteen seconds a day when I've been getting certified chronometer results from all of my loreo and star King watches
I don't get it how these get so cheap! There is a sale going on on AliExpress, and you can get a fully automatic, although not sapphire starking TM0915 for 28$! And this one for a fifty! Really nice review as always.
Nice watch for under $50. I like the styling and especially the Roman numeral at 12 o'clock position and the date at 6 o'clock. I think that for the price I would go for the blue with leather even though I normally agree that a stainless bracelet is the place to start.
Nice choice for a review. Could you take a crack at some of the Carnival brand? Similar in style and pricing with many styles.
Could you make a Gustav-Becker-st1901 chronograph watch review. I guarantee that you would be the first English watch review channel on RUclips to do so. Also it looks cool - similar to the Seagull 1963 but its flatter in its design -> but is it worth it?
That is a sweet looking watch good call
@@fraserp2377 Yes it is a very good looking watch, unfortunately any info about this watch is.... to put it mildly - sketchy and inconsistent at best. But I can with a 99% certainty say it is a Chinese watch, sold in China and on ebay for around 172 pounds. I would love to see a review and a thumps up or down on overall quality.
thats insane! im ordering one now! Jeeeeez, thats crazy for price. im waiting on phoibos to restock so i can order py007 black in mid of march. stop persuading me! haha
Just got this, really like it! (Two tone version)
i would pay MORE for multi coated sapphire.
I hope they would allow such option.
Great video as Jody. Perhaps you try some of the more expensive Ali watches such as th San Martin SN001.
I've just ordered one, after reading good things about them.
I got to unsubscribe! You're videos are costing me too much money! Lol
Just checked your link:
$28.35 US Dollars or £22 sterling - delivered!
Oh bloody hell I am tempted for twenty two quid.
What do I do?????????????
They’re addictive I just bought 3 of them
You are the starking king
Star(king)²
I also just ordered a starking, really impressive for the price. I justed wished they used some other hands
Now that I got my sarx055, I'm going to check this one out.
Hey Jody, I just noticed that Ali Express is using a screenshot of one of your videos to promote the use of sapphire crystal on the starking.
Hello mate! Yes, Starking asked me if they could use it, and paid me for the privilege. Wonders will never cease! Thanks for letting me know mate.
@@JustOneMoreWatch Wow kinda cool :-)
Next up Rolex will ask you if you really really don't want to buy a Submariner :-D
Cheers mate!
I haven't got any Chinese watches but very tempted by these
I like to know about the bracelet, is it 20mm to 18mm or 20mm to 16mm. Thank you.
Great videos my friend. How are your experiences buying from aliexpress? Where are they located?
Thx
Please, make a review on Benyar BY-5144
Great find. Happy weekend to you
Nice video. The starking watches look amazing.
What is your take on the Guanqin Nomos Lambda homage?
Ehh, I like the understated nature of the original. For some reason this one looks cheaper.
Great video and review
I would say an improvement on the ones I saw on Amazon. More color details.
How do you find these Jody? Incredible value and even look nice too. Could get one as a holiday dress watch but then I would not wear the SARB. I must resist or my grail gets ever further away...
Great review and great value for the price.
Very attractive watches but there is no way am I going about with "Starking" on my watch face.
Jody, what about a competition - ask viewers to come up with potential brand names because as I have said before, the likes of "Starking" is just not good enough, certainly for the western market? I am sure with your contacts you could gain some attention.
Starking watch for the winner :-) :-)
Quality review as ever.
Thanks.
Surprisingly I don't mind the name because it's put together and not separated. Seen some weird chinese names like Yaozhee, and Roylees lol.
Picked up the high beat Starking in black for my nephew and had a hard time giving it up.
Bought an even cheaper Starking that I think it has the same movement as this. After a few days I noticed the second hand stutters a bit (or it's not a smooth 8bps) between 30 and 50 seconds, but not the rest of the rotation. There's something wonky with the gears in there...
Did you buy with a white dial? I bought one (an hommage to Tissot Le Locle) and I got what you describe. In addition, it was way too fast (but I regulated it) and when I hack, the watch don't restart itself, I have to shake hardly to make it ticking again. In the other hand I have 2 other starking auto with black dial and they are running really fine. On reddit someone suggested that maybe the movement was magnetized, I am waiting for a demagnetizer and I'll give a shot.
Came late. Always a great value for dress occasion.
Here's my opinion, as someone has stated that the low value, means these are throw away watches if they break, and you can just get another one. However, I feel that if that's the case, then you really are better off buying a better watch and a reputable movement. My reason being, that $50 each time adds up, and by the time you get to the 4th watch, it'll be $200. Whereas getting a $200-$300 watch should last you way longer, if you look after it.
Hence, I would only buy this if you are really on a tight budget, and only as a one off and not get another once it breaks, because you can put that money towards buying a better watch instead.
The low value, throw away and just get another one statement is the thing that really needs to proved don't you think. Cheap doesn't automatically mean it should be resigned to the crap pile. Point taken about spending good money after bad, that's valid. I have two Chinese watches and to the most part, I'm happy with them. And no breakdowns as yet. And I truly enjoy them. I also have Hyundai vehicles, not long ago they were considered of poor quality.
What if it lasts 3 years?
Please do a video on saint honore watches from jomashop,I mean you get an elabore grade regulated and adjusted eta 2824 movement for less than $190 including shipping with saint honore watches from jomashop and people absolutely need to know they can get a deal like that on a great Swiss made watch with assisted and regulated elabore grade eta movement
Can't find this on Aliexpress. Do you have a link?
Whats a good slim watch under 9mm you would recommend? Doesn't have to be automatic, but under 150$
Not sure if I should watch this because I've already bought 4 watches JUST BECAUSE OF YOU!!!! Oh well, it's a safe habit :-)
Marty, you gotta come back with me.
Where?
Back to the Future
Not a fan of plated watches but that's definitely VFM
I've got the other Starking one, the bracelet is beyond awful. The watch itself is very nice so I'm wearing it on a suede strap now
What are you talking about?!?
The bracelet is really well made and wears very comfortable. No sharp edges, the clasp is fine. The polish+brush finish is a nice one too.
Can you please check out Aarni Wooden watches! They're a Finnish watch company, supposedly swiss movement in The watches, pricing starting 169 euros. I'm thinking about buying one for my Brother as a bday gift (he's a carpenter). Would love to hear your thoughts! + No one has reviewed them on RUclips yet!
how you find the starking watches you have so far? after more than 1yr have you had any problem so far?
Watch-nuts can´t ignore a watch like this on a price like that. But a dress-watch on a bracelet is a no-go for me. I´d choose one on the leather strap for me. But very attractive anyway... Good value for the money, no matter what.
Word on the street is AP have just come with a series of homages (still maybe they fixed the crown)
nice watch for the price ... cheers
hello sir. is this watch hack and hand wind? thank you for this lovely review. it is a very handsome watches specially the blue and gold tone. cheers. :)
I think that the chinese brands like STARKING epitomize the dominion of the chinese industry low cost on the days to come.
I bought one(AM0184)and after a month, the second hand started stuttering occasionally. I regret taking a chance on this one. I have reached out to Starking and they have not responded to my request for a replacement or refund. I would not recommend this watch, Do not buy.
What is the power reserve for this?
Hi Jody! Would you recommend starking over guanqin?
I would recommend Cadisen C1032 over both.
Nice to know that. Thanks Jody!
Just remember guys, it doesn't have to be a chronometer to get chronometer results, which is +4 - -4 seconds per day
Does the watch still work?should I order it at 11.11???🤔
Jody: Have you seen the Aesop watches on Ali X? Legit, or just a fable?
Fable
Not bad. I’d like it better if they split the name into 2 words “Star King”.
Yeesh, not a fan of either color combo. I purchased the last Starking that was reviewed because it was so clean/minimal in it's color and execution. But as always, thanks for the review bud!
It gave up after less than half a year. Remarkable indeed....
There is no need for me to spend 50 bucks on a watch that looks like I have won it at a fairground attraction in 1994. The one with those little cranes.
New spinnaker dumas review coming soon I hope?
21 hours!
Where are they located?
Is there any cheap square automatic watch? I have been searching for one but couldn't find any.
Check out the Parnis Naut. I have one and I love it. Now is around 90 dollars. Cheers!
They need to make invicta pro diver copy for $70-80.
Lol a copy off a copy! No thanks
@@NathanChisholm041 homage of rolex sounds too cheesy.
@@zsel81 The pro diver is only a little bit more I don't understand why you would want a copy? They can be bought for around $130
Tissot homage?! Lol :D Also, with the chinese movement like that you have to take it to the service and clean it right away.
They use very cheap metal to make these. I have seen lots of Chinese watches show signs of rust at the pins and discolor on the case quickly. At most its a 20 dollar movement, 5 dollar case, 10 dollar crystal and a 3 dollar band at retail prices. I wiil stick with the brands that don't use salve labor.
Hi Jody. Did you ever reviewed the Cadisen C8089M ? I own one and it's really a gem of a watch. I bought it in yellow gold touch, the other got a rose gold touch to it. It runs a Miyota automatic movement, which is deadly silent. If you happen to get one ,I'm pretty sure you'll like it. Keep it up !! www.gearbest.com/men-s-watches/pp_009571624726.html?wid=1433363
its March 2020, is this watch still working fine?
They now do a Miyota model, that would be my choice if you're keen. Cheers!
Check this out: Starking BMO990
Have you ever had a watch that says 'sapphire ' and it's not?
Brill xalue
yup, bargain!!👍
Nothing worse than when the collars don't match the cuffs!
xalue? ffs
Well.........they are cheap enough I suppose. But they look it. Especially that bracelet. Ugh.
What's wrong with the bracelet ?...………...it looks to be well made and much nicer than the majority of watch bracelets in this price range.
:)
