  • Nothing like the feeling of sinking in a boat offshore but at least I know my Deep Drop Chicken Rigs work! Support the channel and get some:
    southfloridafishingchannel.com
    In this fishing catch and cook episode on the South Florida Fishing Channel we go deep dropping at the islamorada humps and catch some great fish, but the weather quickly shifts and we decide to head back to land.
    The wind and waves pick up, but nothing I haven't been in before. We hit a wave and hear the transom crack. The fiberglass at the top bolts of the engine is almost completely ripped off and the bottom bolts are cracked through and water starts to pour into the bilge.
    At this point we are officially sinking 10 miles offshore with land not in sight. The only thing I see is Molasses reef tower, tiny off in the distance. On top of that boat sinking issue, the sun is almost down and it's going to be dark. Not a good time to sink...
    This is a scary fishing catch n cook. But at least it's a fishing catch and cook. If the boat would have sank there would be no catch and cook.

    If you were in this same situation where you feel your boat is sinking offshore and there is no one around what would you do?
    Huge thanks to the coast guard for getting to my position so fast. It felt so much better knowing coast guard was in the sky looking for our boat if we would have sank offshore.
    Now I need to find someone to fix my transom and hopefully I will never have boat sinking in my youtube video title again. It is scary when you realize your boat is taking on water and sinking, but it important to stay focused and do what you have to so you can live to fish another day.
    Hope you enjoyed this offshore fishing catch and cook video. I will try my best to figure out more catch n cook videos for ya'll and i'll see you on the next fishing catch n cook episode!
    PS: I promise there will be no more boat sinking...

Not sure when my boat will be functional again, but I'm digging deep into my creative brain to put out some super fun videos for ya'll including catching sharks from a paddleboard, blowing stuff up with the airgun and building some cool things. It is a good idea to get a epirb, though expensive they save lives and so if you dont have one get some. Might need to reinforce the hull once repaired inside the bilge with some steel beams or something.

    Glad you guys made it back. I had a similar experience but mine was just straight up my error. I hit the 17 mile mark in our old 1978 Bonito bow rider. Myself, two buddies, so accustomed to it that never in a million years did it dawn on any of us how dangerous things can get and how quickly. well, this particular 15 mile trip ended with a swamp motor, no boat, and my friends and I holding on to one another. We managed to get life jackets on, but one friends was about 5 times too small. No idea what the hell we would do, My mother had already called the Coast guard when a squall line had come thru which was why we were headed in. We lost our radio on the squall snd she freaked because she couldn't get us. So we floated from 7pm until about daybreak the next morning. It was far and above the scariest thing Ive ever been through. I am guilty as hell to this day for putting my friends in such dangerous situation. I own a Mako 171 with a Merc 90 behind it, today. I don't much leave the harbor these days. It changes a man I suppose, or at least it changed this one. Best of luck and be safe out there.
    Chas.

    The back of that boat needs more than just fiberglass. You need to get that thing to a pro that can rebuild the whole back end of it with stainless steel and an Armstrong grade transom.

    • @mumbols

      Aluminum and stainless will work with fiberglass. I make reinforcements for my uncles boat and his friends deep sea. You drill the stainless and or aluminum and lace the fiber in and out leaving tails. Then build the form around it. Stress point only moves when you don't brace bottom to top. You can build a square tube frame inside and then drill to the glass. Much more process but it works very well. You can do with wood frame then glass it over and lay fiber but has to be done right because bubbling in between will create a flex point that eventually will crack and fail. Did a lot of fiberglass repair and custom work for supporting lots of weight. Its all in the approach and how much you have to work with.

      Fiberglass is plenty strong. It just depends on how thick it is, what kind of core structure, the condition of the core, and the design.
      Edit: my current boat project is a full hull extension on a 1965 Bertram 25. It will end up looking like a bracket, but be for width, full flotation. The transom part will have a total of 16 layers of 17 oz. biaxial epoxy fiberglass and 2.25" thick Coosa board.

    Hey H, man i know that feeling! I had a boat that had a similar transom and when the wind was blowing and my boat would turn waves came in the back end! I dont like open transoms. I had someone strip it down and add marin plywood and close the transom while attaching the new transom to the old structure. Then I made an alumimum plate that covers the entire back and front of the transom so the inside portion is grabin more with more to grab all the way up to gunnels or the top of the boat. Then I used a bracket and then the engine. Your will boat will rung as if its i longer and it will give you speed. I didnt like that because of the exention it made the back heavy but it was Awesome! Good luck boss!

But how do you place a 4 stroke 250 that weights much more than the transom was originally intended for. Remember that your boat is an older boat that has a transom intended for 2 stroke. Your transom may be rated for 250 but its not rated for that weight nor that amount of torque that engine has. Also your transom is very open in the back. While your very lucky, this will be a lesson learned. Please be safe and next time do more homework when repowering. Best thing you can do is convert it to a euro transom. Or close the transom. Use straight Coosa foam with many sheets of glass. Put a heavy duty bracket and have it reinforced. And while its opened in the back, check tge transom as well. Remember that old school 2 strokes weighed around 415lb. Much less than your engine

    I'm really sorry that you went through that but glad you guys are safe. That's a lot of stress! Couple of things that could be learning moments for everyone;
    1) you did not have a mayday situation. You had a Pan Pan situation. The difference is that mayday means assistance IS required (i.e., the bilge pump is not able to keep up and we know we cannot get to shore before we sink). Pan Pan means that you have a serious issue and may soon be in need of assistance but you may be able to recover the situation yourself. It's likely that the Coasties were able to determine the difference in your situation and reacted accordingly but using the correct language can help to make sure the right resources are devoted to assist (and correctly prioritized if they happen to be working other situations).
    2) If the guys that mounted that new outboard sunk that aluminum bolt plate that deep into your transom and didn't warn you that your transom was rotten - big shame on them. It's possible that it sank into the transom during that failure event but the caulking looks like it was set that way before. Either way, I have a feeling you will be better equipped to evaluate the condition of a transom in the future. This was avoidable if a quick proper and skilled evaluation was made from the outside of the transom.
    Again, REALLY glad it worked out well for you...and while it's not a small repair, it's definitely a reasonable repair. Good luck and can't wait to see you back on the water.

    😨 sorry about that Transom being cracked. Glad you’re okay! Good thing you had your dad and brother to help out and the coastguard show up quickly! And a hi 5 to that other captain that heard your mayday was there on time to help you out too. This is why it’s imperative to have a radio on the boat!!

      Never had a problem that you knew of over time and force of the motor they bottom of the bracket always starts digging in. Theres a reason why conch boats stopped making there 33ft and you see so many regulators on the market. Its law if physics in leverage

    • @mikelyons469
      @mikelyons469 3 года назад +1

      A motor bracket would put more pressure on the transom. Remember Sir Isaac Newton? "Give me a lever long enough and I can lift the world."

    Time for a lot of work on the boat, maybe an upgrade to a new one. Every fiberglass boat I have ever owned has had glass, gel coat and or wood rot issues. Lessons learned, My newest boat is all aluminum, it is built without wood, glass or gelcoat.
    Good job on the “Life Savers and Good Samaritans for being there so quickly for you.

    That Toadfish Point you have is for opening Clams and oysters my friend. I remember going to a Tourney weigh in and saw Toadfish who uses 100% recycled materials for their rods and tools. Truly an amazing company! Worth every penny.

      That oyster knife is too sharp.......before you stab your hand, get a dexter, its longer and more rounded. At aged 66, probably shucked 10,000 oysters and maybe half with no gloves, no serious cuts. Just bakeor steam the tough ones.
