  • “Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication,” Robert Adams has famously said. We see this not only in the austere refinement of Adams’ compositions and his unfailing focus on nature’s vast beauty and our impact upon it. It’s also part of his approach to bookmaking.
His latest books "Los Angeles Spring", "Summer Nights, Walking", "Eden" and "On Lookout Mountain" are available here: steidl.de/Books/Four-new-book...

I can’t tell you how much Adams and his wife have inspired me today I am undertaking several 5x4 projects at the moment 2 in Northern Spain and at least one more in Northern England and all of them have as their central theme this idea of documenting the last vestiges of what went before hopefully before they disappear. Time is not on my side but I feel I need to leave this body of work behind for future generations to understand what we are doing to this planet. Adams and his wife are due recognition for such stellar work technically excellent and poignantly important.

Remarkable man and I find the relationship with his wife so touching. One of the great figures of late 20th century American art. Hopefully one day that is fully recognised.

This was so lovely to watch. The things he says are simple but impactful in their simplicity. Thank you for creating this video with Robert Adams.

What a wonderful documentary, so many thoughts and insights to digest. I am always inspired and in awe of what Robert has to say about his work. I have recently got the books (Summer Nights, Walking has been a 3 year wait for me), and they are quite special. I am impressed by just how much work has gone into making each of these books. Gerhard gave some insights into the thought and effort behind each book (such as the sourcing of that wonderful blue cloth and the difficulties of binding), it would be interesting to hear more about this in another video just to appreciate what goes into making each of these gems.

Poignant. Wonderful. But the underlying sadness I feel watching this makes me feel like there is something here that I am not quite getting. Adams' darkroom has been packed away. His tone is as though he is no longer photographing? Then a bit later he made a remark about those who can no longer see. If anyone has knowledge of this, can you direct me toward more?

Yeah, I also got a sad undertone, as if he was giving up on something. Either on photography, on America, on hope or even on life in general.

existence is torment. that's why artists chase their ideals in art. existence is a terrible thing and those ideals doesn't exist outside of art.
