    Song of Defense is a great ability. You mention that it takes a reaction so you are sacrificing shield for it, but the ability is meant to be used when shield wouldn't give you enough AC to avoid the spell attack or if the spell doesn't hit your AC, but makes you take a saving throw. I think the ability really competes with absorb elements spell, which take a reaction to gain resistance to an elemental damage effect and then powers up your next melee weapon attack with that elemental damage.

    Two things to consider for Bladesinger's new version of Extra Attack would be Crossbow Expert and the Soulknife Rogue. Both would allow you to do the Attack > Cantrip > BA Attack combo you get from two weapon fighting, except they can do it at a 30ft or 60ft range respectively. Of the two I personally think Soulknife is better, but it does require a larger investment.

    • @crownlexicon5225
      @crownlexicon5225 3 года назад

      Soul knife has issues of its own though. The blades only appear when you take the attack action and since they're not a weapon worth at least 1 sp, you cant use BB/GFB

      @@crownlexicon5225 The SK recommendation here is specifically for a ranged version of the Bladesinger, so you would generally be using Firebolt or Toll the Dead instead of a Blade cantrip with this version. Psychic Blade 1 > Firebolt > Psychic Blade 2. But if you still want to use a Blade cantrip sometimes with this version all you have to do is keep a short sword handy and draw it with your off hand when you’re in melee. Take the attack action, make your first attack with the Psychic Blade, use your Bladesinger Extra Attack to cast a Bladetrip with the short sword in your offhand, and then take your bonus action attack with the short sword.

    I want to make a Fighter 14 Eldritch Knight (5th level caster), and 6th Level Wizard(6th level caster), for 11 caster levels total, and can cast disintegrate, or animate objects as the bonus action, or do 1 Cantrip and 3 regular attacks a round, 1 of those being the bonus action from war magic so you can still use a great sword. This seems incredible.

    • @azaty1721
      @azaty1721 3 года назад +3

      From what I remember, you dont add the spellcasting level when considering what level spells you can learn, only how many spell slots you have. For example, is entirely possible to have 7th level spell slots but not have the ability to learn spells naturally, (adding spells in game to your spellbook via copying from other spellbooks and scrolls still works). A 14th level Eldritch Knight can learn 3rd level spells max, as does a 6th level wizard. You would have to have a minimum of an 11th level wizard to have access to 6th level spells.
      Another note, you cant use two hands to make an attack during bladesong or it ends, leaving the greatsword idea unviable.
      Also also, EK has to be level 18 to be able to cast full-on spells and make an attack as a bonus action
      Also also also, the multiattacks do not add together during multiclass. So you would have at most 3 attacks from 14 fighter with the possible option of doing 1 attack and 1 cantrip, then a bonus action that isn't casting a spell or making a regular weapon attack. In this case, using crossbow expert would be a good idea since it counts as a bonus action.

      You don't have a proper understanding of how these abilities stack or work. You'd have access to 6th level spell slots, but the spells you could learn can only be 3rd level or lower. The max level spell you can learn is dependent on your class level not your caster level.
      With your action you could make three attacks, two attacks & a cantrip, or cast a spell. Then as a bonus action you can make an additional attack if you did cast a cantrip during your action.
      I don't know where you got casting disintegrate or animate objects as a bonus action though. Neither class gets access to a feature that would allow that.

    Great video as per usual, but I will say truestrike has 1 decent use. If you're about to cast an important. high level spell, it may be a good idea to use true strike to gain advantage and will be able to do a bit extra damage. It is usually bad, and that is very niche use as many high-level spells have saving throws, but there are still some niche uses. Still sucks, but there is a very slight and weak, but present use for it.

      @bluehat_plumber9763 3 года назад

      @@zagreusnyx360 Keep in mind, you're using your turn to gain advantage on 1 attack versus making two attacks. Sure, you're all but guaranteed a hit with your one melee attack, but two separate attacks might also hit without advantage. This is especially true when you have a maxed out attack stat (STR/DEX), and that's without a magical item or other buff. Not to mention, any good melee character (including an Eldritch Knight, Profane Soul, and now by extension the new Bladesinger) should always be trying to flank an enemy in melee whenever possible. This helps promote good teamwork within any party as well as strategy in combat.
      Bottom line; this is a decent or even a good strategy. However, True Strike is still, in the majority of many scenarios, a sub-optimal, subpar and even borderline bad spell. I personally believe there is truly no 'bad' spell in D&D. That being said, True Strike just isn't good.

    Geralt uses cantrips, low level buffs (mostly from potions) and maybe an occasional smite. I've never noticed him casting anything that could be called a 5th level spell. He's most definitely an eldritch knight.
    If you want a bladesinger esque character in Sapkowski's universe, look to Vilgefortz. And even with him, I'd say the closest he got to that is when he cast instant summons, shillelagh and Tenser's Transformation (maybe) to beat Geralt up.

    With some Echo Knight, and upcast Shadow Blade, a Singer can do some vicious melee. Taking a couple levels in EK is a complete waste, the benefits are hugely redundant.
    Mirror Image is non-concentration, and wizards have the slots to use Shield spell like candy, which allows wizards to be more tanky.
    Concentrating on Animate Objects while you melee-fight is interesting too (very thematic with flying daggers).
    But really a bladesinger is a wizard, who is capable of fighting some. While an Eldritch Knight is a fighter who is capable of using some magic. If you want to melee "a lot", take EK. While Bladesinger might be better played as a very high-AC wizard, who can generally do more damage with weapons than cantrips when the risk of melee engagement is not high.
    The problem with bladesinger is that you need both Dex and Int very very high (maxed ideally). Which means you can't really get a couple of very badly needed Feats which would really make the class work as a melee character. If race restriction is now gone, I can't imagine taking anything other than variant human to be able to grab an extra feat. BS is absolutely starved for attribute points and feat slots.

    • @RichMerry

    Imo, the bladesinger is a great class to play if you get good stat rolls. Studded armor, int+dex and mage armor give you an healthy early game ac and the bladesong is really quite impressive. I hope they give you that int damage bonus at a earlier level however, it would make you a little more effective in melee early on.

      I believe that Tasha’s Cauldron is trying to be setting agnostic and give players more options. From a game design perspective it’s a positive step and as a DM you can quite easily ignore what you don’t like.

    • @artostheimplacable4095
      @artostheimplacable4095 3 года назад +2

      @@RichMerry I think the lore behind the bladesinger is more important than "being agnostic". If they want other races to be able to do something similar, they could either make a new class, or just let people homebrew, even create homebrew rules for it. I've heard of people altering it for other races before, but they made sure not to call them "Bladesingers" as everyone knows that Bladesingers are a very specific thing.

    • @RichMerry
      @RichMerry  3 года назад +1

      It’s similar to the Dwarven defender from 3.5 in that regard. Just changing the restriction is a bit easier for them to do than to totally rebrand a subclass to a Gish or some other blade magic school. It gives the responsibility for the lore to the DM and player. If your familiar with the videogame marvel Vs capcom infinite you’ll know that the developers got some backlash for removing x-men characters and claiming that other characters can do the same functions. If they called it something else would that make the bladesinger obsolete for the majority of players?

    • @artostheimplacable4095
      @artostheimplacable4095 3 года назад +1

      @@RichMerry I don't think so, not if it was done properly. They have many ways to handle it without tainting the lore.
      Bladesinger used to be a prestige class, that wouldn't be a bad option. Make a class called a "spellsword" or something and give the elven players who follow the RP and lore a reward in a prestige class. That would make it even more exclusive but I don't see an issue with that.
      You also have the aspect of the bladesong being a very specific thing, I don't think you'd give a generic "spellsword" class the bladesong even if the bladesinger class remained as an full class option. They'd probably be better off giving them a few extra fighter type abilities to fill in the gaps. Sort of like an inverted eldritch knight. A caster with fighting skills, rather than a fighter with spells.
      I understand the point of it being up to the players and the DM to use the lore correctly though, and it's cool if it works. I just doubt that many will. There'll be a lot of "um so gud dat dey med me da furst Tiefling bladesinger cos I brek da mould and am kewl" etc.

    I guess the big problem with Bladesinger is the same problem with every Gish class. Your class advances are going into making you a less pathetic melee fighter rather than boosting your ability to cast spells. Fortunately the Wizard is a top tier spellcaster anyway, so you're still good at magic, you're just not as good as a character that's devoted themselves to spellcasting.

      Your one of the tankiest thing tho. They r the only class (subclass) to be able to get to 30+ac without magic items (from my knowledge). They r the farthest thing from a glass cannon like he said in the video. U could just raise your con and get the toughness feat and your ac will be on par with pretty much everyone else. Gish classes r my fave thing to play and I don’t appreciate u hating on them. Their amazing!!
      Also it’s not like your losing out on the amount of spells u get and u also don’t have to go into melee. U can stay back with your 30+ac (along with having spells like absorb elements and the ability song of defense, and also shield but that’s how u can get up to 30+ac) and cast spells from afar if u wish to do that (personally I like going up).
      It’s not like it’s eldritch knight with not having much spells. Now they kinda suck and r kinda poorly designed.
      A Gish is a spellcaster who has a lot of defensive buff spells and they can mix it up in melee if they have to or u want to. But u don’t have to (tho I definitely like to lol). Keep in mind the added feature at lv 6 from the new bladesinger (which is actually how it is) doesn’t specify melee attack. So pick up a bow and use something like fire bolt, ray of frost, or chill touch (aka kill touch as I call it). Or any other ranged cantrip u like.
      Sorry this is long but I got triggered by u talking crap about my fave type of class (Gish) and also my fave subclass (bladesinger).

    Glass cannon? Glass canon? I haven’t even fully watched this video but I just couldn’t believe u called them a glass cannon. Bladesingers can get like the highest ac out of anyone. They can get like 30+ ac without magic items (involves casting of a few spells to do so but meh you’ll have a lot of spells later). They’re more so a glass cannon inside of a damn tank lol. But u could just get your con up and get the toughness feat and boom no longer a glass cannon and also song of defense is nice (especially if the spell shield can’t bring your ac high enough). Or use absorb elements which if u can use is much better then song of defense but if absorb elements and shield don’t work then song of defense comes in. They r the farthest thing from a glass cannon.
