1961 Renault Dauphine Fuel Issue Resolved!

  • Scary and potentially dangerous situation regarding too much fuel pressure. My Solex 28 IBT is VERY sensitive to fuel pressure. Too much and it will force the needle off the seat resulting in excess fuel exiting the carburetor via the vent. Always exercise caution, have a fire extinguisher handy, and safety first!

    Glad to see you post about your Dauphine. My 62 just arrived in my driveway after spending an unintentional 12 years outside of Denver (very long story) and one of the first things that I did once getting it here was to locate a used 28 IBT to rebuild. The car currently has a 32 PDSIT-3 Solex on an adaptor, which is a later VW. I assume that it was put on as an upgrade. The mechanic who had the car said that it (yard) ran but probably needs a complete rebuild. Just wondering if you had looked into a bigger carb and what info you might have found out. Love the Dauphine posts you've done, there are just way too few out there!

      The Dauphine is truly an interesting car and frequently on the receiving end of jokes--some deserved and some not. However, I enjoy the car, quirks and all, and at least I don't see myself coming and going at every stop light!
      Good luck with yours...and get out there and do something daily, no matter how trite or for how long. Even five minutes a day translates into 35 minutes per week! Keep the momentum moving forward.

      Maybe 28IBT needs 1-1.5 psi. My Weber DARA works well with mechanical fuel pump (1 psi, 70 liters per hour). This pump is enough for 1.7 inline-4 (moskvitch 412) and works fine even at 5000 rpm

      Thanks for the sharp eye! I never noticed it and certainly did not see any fuel spraying since I recorded the video a while ago. I'll pay particular attention in the future...and keep the fire extinguisher handy nearby, too!
