- Hog Plum is not hard to grow. You simply need to understand its specific growing requirements. One thing you will need for sure, is hot night temperatures for this tree to grow. If you have the yellow variety ( Spondias Mombin ), these growing tips are the same for both red and yellow.
Hog Plum - Jocote Red or Yellow Growing Tips
Best time to plant: Anytime night temperatures are at least 50F and expected to rise in the next month or so. This is going to be mid to late spring for most people.
Sun: Full sun anywhere in the U.S. It doesn't grow well in the shade.
Winter: Frost sensitive, protect from cold wind and frost. Cold hardy to low 20F's (Mature trees). Young trees may take damage sooner.
Root system: Roots grow straight down several feet. Tap root.
Growth structure: This is naturally a shrub. It can grow up to 15-20ft. Tall in ideal conditions and short in not so ideal conditions.
Fruiting: This tree flowers in the spring and fruits ripen sometime in the spring. Those grown from seed tend to take a few years before setting flowers. Ours are grown from cuttings so they fruit same year. Trees in pots don't hold fruit as well as those rooted in ground.
Watering: Shallow water first season in ground. As the tree gets older, deep water. Do let soil dry somewhat in between watering. This is a semi-deciduous tree, once all leaves have fallen in the winter, don't water until new growth shows up in the spring.
Fertilization: In containers, any slow release fertilizer will work. In ground, compost and mulch is all you will ever need. No special fertilizers needed.
Container Grown: Due to its root system, this plant doesn't grow well in a container long term. We recommend you to plant in the ground rather than growing it in a container.
Personal Growing Tip: Once you plant this tree in ground, no top growth is normal until the tree roots in ground. The rooting process can take 1 year+ depending on your local night temperatures. Hot=It Grows faster, Cold=It grows slower. Patreon: patreon.com/QCTropicals (Exclusive perks!)
Very good video amigo! Just bought Yellow Hog plum and your video is very helpful. Salut from California!
Hi! We live in Tampico, on the Mexican Gulf Coast. I planted about 50 hog plum seeds and one, just one, sprouted. The tree has seen some drama what with a fire ant invasion, a cold snap, and what I think was some animal urinating in its pot. Last May we planted it and the tree is now six feet-tall, and kind of spindly-looking as all of the lower leaves and branches fell off during the winter. As the weather heats up, there are new branches and leaves popping out at the top. Looking good!
This was very helpful. Do you have a video on growing one from the seed? I received a fruit from a friend and I really want to grow them! My first attempt was a flop.
Haven't tried any seeds. Cuttings are easy to root, you should try that instead.
You need a cutting from the actual tree. They do not grow from the seeds.
Is it ok to cover the area where the root starts from the trunk,I planted mine and that area is covered. My tree is still healthy and green!
Exactly the video I was looking for. Thanks man
great video.
Great video on a tree that’s sadly vanishing
I have the red and the yellow variety. Florida has a native bush variety I've seen it in the wild too.
thanks bro.for great advice in repotting plant trees. yesterday i both a plant spanish plum but when i report the soil crack the roots got removed by mistake. i dont know if it will still grow. thanks for the idea next time .godbless. i am from the Philippines.
root system is nor sensitive. So a few broken roots won't damage the tree.
Great video. I have a yellow hog plum. Es un arbol de jobito que corte trimmings y quiero plantarlos por eso busque videos. Gracias por la información.
How cold can this plant survive?
Hers in south florida, we call them ciruela.
In Sonora and Sinaloa aswell it’s called ciruela
I know this is an older video, so is there any information you would update? Would you advise against planting in the summer?
they grow in the summer. Mine died from frost damage unfortunately.
@@qctropicals Was it just the frost damage? I've heard they can be cold sensitive under 40 degrees.
Good morning. Very informative video, first video that takes the time to explain all about a fruit tree. I'm in Central West Florida. I have been trying to get someone to donate a few cuttings from the Spanish Red Plum, Jocote, Ciruela. Would you be kind enough to donate a few cuttings to a Disable Army Veteran or maybe you know a friend that would be willing to do this, Here in Florida folks that have this fruit trees are not very cooperative in donating a few cuttings, I grew up with this fruit tree but in the last 50 years been trying to find one with no luck, would you be willing to do this, keep those nice videos coming. Thank you for your service.
ofcourse battle buddy. Edit your personal info out of the reply and simply direct message me instead.
@@qctropicals good afternoon hope your having a wonderful day
How do I contact you.
@@bobc.8224 contact me late spring 2022 for cuttings. I don't have any at the moment.
Hi, I live in Southern California, I brought a cutting from Guatemala several years ago. I planted it and it grew into a small tree. The tree is now about 8 feet wide by 6 feet tall. Last year and this year I had some flowers, very few, but it dropped them and I didn't get any fruit. What do you think I might be doing wrong? Btw, this is a great video. I love all the information you provide in it. Thanks for it!
A few reasons I can think of. Not enough water and tree simply drops its flowers to preserve water or it's in too much shade. Which one do you think is it?
Maybe too much water? They don't require much water, at least not in Mexico. I want to grow one in Central California.
Add liquid calcium to it
I had hope until you said it dropped the flowers 😢😢,any fruits yet?
I’m looking to buy one
I'm not too far away ... in Tempe. How large a tree does this tree become in this area? I see pictures of it online and it seems like it could become massive (but maybe not in our climate). How fast a grower is it? How small do you think it could it be kept via pruning? Do both the red and yellow have the same growth characteristics? My yard is not huge (7500 sq ft) and either water or sewer run through the middle of the front and back yard ... so that is one reason why I ask. It seems like it is probably a good idea to plant it away from foundations and water lines.
To be honest, i have yet to see a big tree here in AZ. You can keep them pruned but the girth of the trunk may get big so keep away from block walls.
Are roots deep or shallow and would mess up cement? Ty
I have one jojote tree and no you can Reproduce by brushes when is the best time to reproduce I live in Los ángeles California. My tree they all ready give me pruit for the last two years
Good morning, can I foliar spray jocote fruit trees
Is this the same as a ciduela
I live in the UK. Somehow I found one of these trees... I can't figure out how the holy hell 😳 I've researched and researched and it's THIS tree, the UK is zone 8 where it is and it should grow in zones 10-11
The UK is the last place I would've thought to find this tree.
Would love to get one of these to grow in Vegas. Do you sell/ship to here?
we do sell small ones but only during early spring. Check back then.
Hi, I would like to grow this tree on a pot . I live in New Jersey, zone 6b...Do you think it will survive? Will I be able to collect any fruit?
unfortunately unless you kept it in a heated greenhouse it won't make it. Also this tree grows too fast to be kept in a pot long term.
I already have one but I worry it will get too big can I maintain this plant small like a dwarf tree ?
Where do you live? You can try pruning yearly.
I live in central Florida and bought this plant recently. It is about 3 ft and has a thick stem with a few branches. Do I wait till March to plant it in the ground or should I do it now?
What's the lowest temperature you get during winter?
@@qctropicals lowest I would say is around 50. But then there is wind which could make it feel even lower.
Hi, we’ve had a jocote tree for about 10 years in south Florida. In the last 3 years it stopped producing fruit. We get green leaves and then it sheds around March but we get no fruit. Is there is anything we can do?
so your tree defoliates in the middle of summer? Something is going on with your root system. Either physical or chemical damage.
It’s completely defoliated by now but I notice that the same tree type in my neighborhood are full of fruit by now.
My friend is getting a little impatient with his. We are in May - no fruit and no leaves but it's alive. There's one in the neighborhood that had fruit followed by leaves, as his did for the past two years. This is in South Florida
Most people have 10 fingers you only need one
16-15 degrees of what? Celsius? or 50-60 F?
Always in Fahrenheit. I now put the conversion in all my new videos.
@@qctropicals Ok sry i did modified the comment yesterday but apparently it didn't work out. It seems an impossible plant to have in Italy xD ... where i live in winter we can get -1 (30 F) and sometimes -3 C (26 F) at night and i'm always scared that the plants die. There are so many plants that i wanna grow but i can't for those few freeking points of cold. Close to be able to grow tropical plants but not close enough 😢
@@alessandromariani3015 awesome from Italy!. I get -3 here every winter. It just takes more work to keep these plants alive, that's all
@@qctropicals I live basically on the sea, it's a steep slope, so it's not that easy to use nets, and build covers or move anything around, anyway i must try with maybe a mango first.
Do you sell and mail cuttings to California?
yes, during summer months only.
@@qctropicals I'd like to buy cuttings please. Today is June 6, 2022.
@@qctropicals I would like to buy cuttings. Please.
You tink can i have in oklahoma
you would need to provide cold protection to grow this tree in your area. Every winter for the life of the tree.
I grow this
You sale the hog plums.?

The common name is not jacote but jocote.
Have you ever successfully grafted a red plum branch onto a yellow plum tree?
