- Watch, listen and learn how to start a 1945 John Deere Model D Tractor. This 2 cylinder fly wheel tractor will bring a smile to anyone who loves old John Deere tractors.
We used to put a coffee can on the exhaust to keep the rain/snow out. It was fun to watch how far it flew when we fired the old D up.
Thanks for this. My Grandpa used to buy old John Deeres and restore them to their former glory. His mode D was one of our favorites. John Deere made a real classy tractor with this one.
Wonderful restoration job Henry. Love the sound of that D coming to life
Beautiful tractor, and in flawless showroom condition as well!
Hi Henry. Sure am glad someone sent this link to view. Lucille and I have lost track of you over the years. Great to see you and also the fabulous job you did on the restoration of the D. Can tell you are a perfectionist by the fabulous job of the restoration. I can only imagine the countless hours "no doubt enjoyable" on putting it all together and the feeling or pleasure you felt seeing the finished project. Glad you were able to pass on the video for so many others to enjoy. Thanks again for sharing an amazing machine from the past. Trust all finds you well.
Thanks Vic and Lucille
Beautiful Tractor! Looks like it just rolled right off the line!
Stunning tractor sir
A friend of mine has two of these Model D and has never had them running. This is the summer we will get them going, thank for the video.
I love the model D tractors I want to get a late 30's D model that has the old JD font on the front but I love the looks and sound of them. I missed out on a running 1938 Model D that sold at a auction for 900 dollars it was a older restoration tractor that was left outside after the barn that it was in was destroyed by a Tornado so it needed fresh paint but it was a nice tractor. Anyway I want to get one of them just to have and bring to farm shows and such.
I love most 'vintage tin' but especially those JD D's. They can do a lot of work but never in a hurry. If I recall top speed in high gear was 6 MPH so not the best choice for a 'get away' vehicle.
The old poppin Johnny love that sound we had a D model when I was a little feller
Luv that sound 😊
Runs like a watch!! Great restoration job. Congratulations. Love how it clicks over at the lowest rpm.. Thank you for the great video.. I watch it over and over, and come back to see it again a couple of month later ...
1948 Dad had a old steel wheel D, you started it on gas, switched over to kerosene and after it got hot you opened a valve that let water drip into the cylinders, That old gal could be heard miles away when you were plowing. as a 13 year old kid I loved to operate that tractor. when shutting it down I often forgot to turn the water off. Remove both plugs and turn the flywheel over until all the water was blown out. Didn't take long to learn my lesson ☺
Dang Folks! Look at that Dude's powerful *JD* *Back* around frames 2:43 ! That's how you'll brawn out too if you be hand cranking your Farm Equipment! Thank You for the upload and the Farm Memories!
Absolutely beautiful tractor
Hi Henry I'm Jon Miller my dad grew up on a 37 B on Steel that my grandfather bought and then in 49 bought a Mt and farmed with that untill the late 50s. I still have the Mt today along with the original plow and cultivators.
I have a 38 unstyled D and I love it. And I have several others in my collection. Love your tractor. It sounds amazing! Looks beautiful too!

The JD model was popular with Australian wheat farmers - a great old tractor
LOVE THIS SOUND
such a nice tractor... :)
Front axle offset ? Great video
Thank you for the many folks viewing - would love to see your comments
Absolutely love it...one great looking tractor, Thanks for sharing Henry. I put many hours in on a 1948 Model A in Nelson MN. Fond memories
Very nice Henry. Good to hear one of these tractors run and start so easy. I'm working on a 1944 model D right now and it has the same front wheels as yours. I like the size of the tires you have on the rear wheels. I need to buy new rear tires and like to know what size and brand are on your tractor. Can't wait to hear mine run after it's done.
Bet his neighbors love that. "POP" "POP" "POP" luplupluplup "POP" "POP"(hope they're retired farmers).
Nice D, so beautiful. I love the D's (I must, as I have 3 that run and 5 parts tractors). Nothing like the sound of a JD D. I like to pull mine. They're winners. You make starting yours look so easy. Check out some of my pulling videos.
Best sounding tractor is the JD D!!
Should be very able to plow a straight furrow with that tractive effort, very efficient use of distillate fuel. Liquid cooled as well.
Farmed with one just like it in my youth.
Looks good and runs well ,nice job...:):):)
Mine started before it was parked too, 7 years ago :(
My father had a cousin who had 1948 D. It looked identical to this tractor except his had an electric starter, so I guess that feature came out in the next year or so. If I remember correctly, it had only one flywheel, but I can't recall for sure.
This one also has a one flywheel, the other is a belt pulley. If it was electric start, it probably had a guard over the flywheel on the left side
Poppin Johny
A very beautiful tractor ! I have a Massey-Harris "Pony" ! I subscribe to your channel !
From France :)
Cool Traktor and beautiful restored. Seat Position looks weird ..is this comfortable to drive?
I have a John Deere 1937 unstyled Model A that I will do a video when the weather improves.
Wether has not improved for 10 months ☺️
If someone is standing close to the engine opening a decompression valve behind them is almost like a bee sting ! Old farm boy trick .
I’ve got a 1941 John Deere D
Another version of this video with the engine set so it almost starts 35+ times and then it finally starts would be hilarious. Have someone on the other side of the tractor start and stop the engine. You wouldn't have to do all 35 pulls at once. Take a break after a few and throw more and more water on your face and shirt after each break so it looks like you're beyond working up a sweat. Out of breath. Having to kneel on the ground at times. It'd go viral.
How many hits have you got on this site Henry?
Love the way these things sound, but why do they seem to misfire so much?
mijn Opa was de eerste na de oorlog die er zo een had voor zijn dorsbedrijf..v w het Marshal hulplan.
Does it come with air conditioning?
You forgot to open the gas valve!! lol
