- The Loma Prieta Earthquake, epicentered just nine miles from Santa Cruz, California, hit on October 17, 1989 at 5:04pm. The quake affected everyone in the region, including the employees of the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk. To commemorate the 30th anniversary of the event, we interviewed Boardwalk staff who experienced the quake, the recovery, and who are still part of the Boardwalk family today.
