Performance DECREASED in 8-Months! Galaxy S23 Ultra Genshin Impact FPS re-Test

- After my last fps test with both of these devices, I noticed for the S23 Ultra had quite a drastic fps performance decrease from the last time I tested back in February. However, because I tested in Fontaine which is technically a more demanding region or area, I decided to re-test in the same place I tested back in February to check for possible performance degradation due to this overclocked SOC here in the S23 Ultra. Last but not least, I will also re-test the iPhone 15 Pro Max in Inazuma as well so that I can directly compare both the results of these devices with all the other smartphones I have tested since 2021.

Great Video! Thanks for bringing this up. Though what I find confusing 😒, is that the power drawl on the Red Magic 8 Pro with the SAME CHIP as S23 ULTRA is using less wattage (even with its overclocked chip) and performing better then the s23 ultra? Also the S23 Ultra heated up more than in Febuary. It appears something in the SOFTWARE is making the S23 drawl more power and heating it up quicker and endure more heat. Therefore reducing the S23 Ultra's Performance. Though Dame i believe to verify my theory, youll need to test more games. Then if samsung is again slowing down phones, we'll throw a lawsuit at them. Ill be waiting for the video. 🎉
Genshin is one of those games that gets more and more demanding each and every day. I would recommend testing other games as this drop in performance is understandable given how much this game continues to expand.
That is a great point
@@DameTech regardless, I have noticed a general slow down on my s23u compared to when I first had it. I game sometimes on it but I feel like the slow down is more noticeable managing the UI and opening apps rather than game performance (which is one of the things SD8G2 prioritizes) so there's that. I hope OneUI6 solves some of these slow down issues as it's quite disappointing for how high end this phone is..
Test Fontaine too especially underwater its so demanding.
I have switch on GT mode on my Neo 3 to push dimensity 8100 to the extreme end.
I tested in my last video with the iPhone 15 Pro Max. The iPhone 15 Pro Max got 58.9 and S23U averages 51.3 fps in Fontaine area.
I've been running it on ultra at 60 fps on the iPhone 11 since the day the game launched, and with compatibility with video game controllers
Can confirm on my side as well.
I thought it would've improved due to shaders being compiled asynchronously
This is crazy. Why aren't reviewers talking about this more.
Sadly, this only did on apple devices, not on pc or android.
one of the reason is Battery and Software, the battery degrade overtime and the voltage will also like decrease and the software also react to that making cpu to used not hundred percent
It's the game that gets more and more demanding, not that the phone got worse. I might try it on mine, can't remember such temperatures even at 27-28 ambient...
7 watt average on snapdrago 8 gen 2 is unusually high for this game. This might be due to a change in cpu core frequency management in the background. However, in reality, you won't need overclock the cortex-x3 to the max to get 60 fps. As a side effect additional power used for nothing and more heat generated. It will be better if the cortex-X can stay between 2.5 to 3.0 GHz and also maintain medium core frequency above 2Ghz to get constant higher performance.
I agree
Yeah ive noticed this for my regular s23. Much slower than when i first got it. I use my 13 pro max again now with ios 17 release. Feels like a new phone
This is most likely due to some updates. Also when benchmarking, did you go to the exact same spot as you did before? This is crucial. Thats why benchmark runs exist on pc games. Different areas with different time of day, how many enemies on screen can affect performance.
Have you seen a drop in performance with other benchmarks like 3dmark?
Genshin using more cpu on every new updates. GPU doenst care here.
Just wanna ask,is this genshin impact downloaded from Google apps store or Galaxy store?
Yes I am facing the same issue here with my s23 ultra but with just 1 game, csr2 racing. It's been gorgeous for the 1st 6 months since february and then around 3 months ago, the FPS dropped significantly, so frustrating!
Honestly the issue with the s23u for me isn’t even the fps, it’s the damn touch latency. It’s always been an issue and it still is even for their latest flagship
What helped me was disabling Samsung‘s gos. I firstly uninstalled it via adb but the phone keeps reinstalling it by itself. By disabling it the performance and touch input got much better
@@adilalkanzy1820tell me you don't know anything about Android phones without telling me
This is also i noticed from switching from android to IOS. And thats why pro players uses iphone (ML).
@@isthishandleavailableyes Ive had better input on IOS, but it has issue on ios generally, so PC was the best decicion, even the input isnt nerly good as ios.
Bro, how much latency do you get that it is an issue
I have already said this here and I will repeat, Apple CPUs have matrix accelerators for this type of game, games are increasingly dependent on CPUs than GPU, if ARM does not change its Architecture it will always be behind Apple Chipsets.
With every new update, genshin becomes more bigger and demanding
So the more bigger it gets the performance will only get worse
But my iphone 13 pro max Still Handling it even it’s heavy and Still stable 60 fps💀💀
@@HyperXrpPubgM1it can't maintain a straight 60 or 50 fps it'll dip to 30,s for sure turn on fps counter
@@NarutoUzumaki-mo4ulNo. A 13 Pro Max will not throttle below 45-55fps. And if you turn on LPM, it apparently never throttles from 60fps.
I agree, but only if other phones also perform worse vs in the past.
Yep, no wonder why CPU usage is higher on every update.
Where is review iphone 15 pro max New update IOS genshin Impact?
Do you think samsung can fix this issue if the wanted to?
Which app u use for monitoring specs?
2022 - it's not optimised by Samsung fans'
2024 - STILL
I need a phone to warmth my hands during winter. Which one do you recommend?
Iphone 15 Pro Max is definitely hotter 🔥! However, if you want true 3rd degree burn then definitely get the Xiaomi 14 Pro Max with that SD8G3. Sadly the S23U will leave your hands cold and in disappointment 😂
Crazy. I feel bad for s23u users
Even it's better than 15 pro 😂
There is no cooling system in iPhones and Google Pickls 😆

Due for the newer Updates, that Game uses More CPU on every.
Honkai Star Rail will be always the same depends on the area, unless they adding newer areas, which uses on newer Areas more than older ones.
Or Android port is poorly optimized compared to PC.
I know this would've required a lot more work; but, in hindsight it would've been helpful to have had multiple games tested and their FPSes logged. That way, if they all dropped by roughly the same amount then we'd know for sure that the issue is with the phone - hardware, glitchy update, or maybe a rogue app running in the background - and not just example number 74 of Genshin's developers treating Android to the scraps.
To anyone reading this; if you want the best Genshin experience, if that's the number one most important thing to you, play it on iOS. The developers have a definite preference for Apple and the iOS version is always better optimized and has more features, like controller support. If you primarily play emulation; buy an Android. Emulator developers are pretty bias in favor of Android because Apple makes it annoyingly hard, but not impossible, to install them while it's the simplest thing in the world to run on Android. Both sides have their gaming pros and cons, it just depends on what you want to do.
Yeah android is the only way to go for emulation. I like that you can emulate on Samsung dex
Yeah Cassia pc emulator is coming to Android devices by next year
I truly hope Apple paves the way for PC gaming devs to start just porting AAA games to mobile - both Android and iOS. Both the A17 Pro and Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 can handle PC games better than low tier laptops, and probably hang with a "few" mid tier laptops
Hey dame tech.
Try these settings in game booster plus.

I think it feels better during those throttling sessions but I am unsure.
Hello, I just got my S23 Ultra about 19PM and 22.30Pm watched your video, I am disappointed in Samsung doing this , I will keep testing the phone but must likely send it back.
yeah id wait for the S24 Ultra or pick up the 15 Pro Max.
Thanks for the reply
As a former android and samsung fanboy i kinda feel bad for samsung users
I use the playstore version, disabled the lab setting, still using the game boost and play while using pause usb delivery and my fps is stable, the phone also doesnt over heat after an hour of playing so i dont get this video??
Is there any performance difference between playstore and samsung store version?
Honestly, I tested and I don't see a difference in performance.
@DameTech so sad, no one cares about android. Even samsung itself not prioritise its own S series. Only ultra get 12Gb RAM, others all only 8Gb. Note that iPhone 15 Pro series already equipped with 8Gb RAM, already on par as average android phones. The RAM advantage on android phones no longer exist.
@vincwong8498 it felt alot smoother for me using the galaxy store version, the game looks prettier too so I highly suggest that
My red magic 8 Pro is also much slower from when I initially got it 😢. It could be snapdragon chip
Your phone didn't get slower , the game just got bigger
@@NarutoUzumaki-mo4ul hmm
Just checked it on mys23 ultra and have stable 60. Sometimes, it drops to 50. But still smooth. A few things I had noticed: gpu load in modstadt during cutting trees maximum is 87%, temperature 44 max. Wreckfest, for example, gpu load 95% almost minimum, normally 98%. Temperature 46 after 10 minutes of Derby, and still avg 65fps+.
Possible solution: Do u use Good guardians?
P s. But anyway don't think it will help because of bad optimization...
Hi bro can you do the same test over cellular data
Why you use different app between Samsung and Apple?
Initially perfdog didn’t work for iOS 17. But after using the new app I really like how easy it is with iPhone devices. Perfdog does have connectivity issues with iOS devices. But now that perfdog is working I will go back to using perfdog whenever I do side by side comparisons between android and iPhone
What about s22 ultra in 2024 genshin impact sir?
in case of testing sd 8gen2 , Xiaomi 13 pro is the best choice out of all android phones .
it give similar performance to iP15 pro max , even though its a year older chip.
Nah, Samsung has the best software in Android.
same for my s23 base model, I think it's due to lack of optimization
“Omg but dame your just being an apple fanboy” 😅. Sorry messing with ya broski 🙌 after iOS fixes I’ll probably use one my upgrades on the 15pm but excited next cycle to see Samsung too
hmm I think it's not Samsung's performance that's down but the genshin game that's getting harder because I saw other reviews of iphone 14 pro max which when it was just released can get 58 to 59 FPS
But now only able to get 50 to 54 FPS only so do you also want to say that the iphone 14 pro max performing drops quickly
But I re-tested the 14 pro max out of curiosity and still got 58 FPS average. The 14 Pro Max is actually so close to the 15 Pro Max that performance wise I don't see the point in upgrading. Metalfx is the only saving grace
@@DameTechhmm I don't know what happened why the iphone 14 pro max on other channels only get 54 FPS maybe the temperature of the room is hot 🤔🤔
Could be, ifixit just posted a new fps test and got a steady 60 with the iPhone 14 pro max. Geekerwan got a 57 fps
My iPad Pro m2 also sometimes lags and goes to 55 fps in Fontaine region so I think it’s the game itself that’s causing the problem
My opinion is ,regardless of how many times you compare genshin gameplay on galaxy and iphones .the fact that the developers of this game only gives a cows a foot about ios will always be there like cm'n we all know this!. Genshin impact will still be better on the freaking iphone 13 than the 23 ultra.
There's no point in doing these test anymore. Genshin impact will not get any better for android unless the developers does some miracle and shift their attention to android phones .
Anyone agree?
+1
Also fun fact : genshin on android still uses opengl api when vulkan is already available.
And opengl api is old af vulkan api is far better. That's why apple discountinued opengl support in 2018 and started using metal (next gen vulkan) lol
For example it runs on metal on iphone 15 pro max and gpu usage is 60%
Meanwhile in s23u opengl it uses 80% means 30% more gpu usage than iphone 15 pro max , if they had used vulkan api then 8gen2 gpu usage would have been 55%
This clearly shows they favor apple with metal vs opengl on android, no controller support for android, higher graphic settings and resolution on apple devices, 120fps only on apple devices.
It gets even worse for Mali-GPU since there is no OpenGL alternative in most games. Genshin is the only game I know really supporting Mali-GPU. Even emulation typically supports just Vulkan and OpenGL
@@DameTech interesting, i think its because nearly all of Chinese phones use mediatek or mali gpu (and mihoyo is chinese company, they even gave higher resolution for some of mi devices lol) , so maybe thats why they use opengl?
Btw genshin supports both vulkan and opengl on android but uses opengl by default and vulkan can only be enabled manually through an app called "GI TUNER" but users have complained that genshin still has some graphical glitches in vulkan and it doesn't fully supports it, its just in development.
Can u pls test genshin with vulkan on android and tell the results while keeping an eye on gpu usage?

because they add more and more things to the game and then they do not optimize
Fair point
Imagine samsung have an tsmc chipset instead of their own
Still the iPhone 15 promax the monster 💪
I mean, there's a lot of things to have into account. Games will always be better optimized on iOS, the game is getting bigger, and the Samsung is already 9 months old plus the OS is not the best for gaming, resulting in them trying to compensate with more raw power on the SoC. Also was GOS turned off? You could try with that. Anyways good for Apple, I still have hopes for the SD8 Gen 3.
