I've learned a lot of his songs but some of his older songs like this are in a such a funky tuning and have such a wonderful sound. I don't even know where to begin - that's why he remains one of my favorite artists because I can't even fathom coming up with this shit on my own. This feels so wholesome.
Update: After listening again, I DON'T think it's in the same tuning as The Fire, (A#GCEFC) I think it's more of a CGCFFC or something similar to Another Friday Night with a capo up around the 4th. Just guessing though.
regular Bm position with g and high e string open, sounds so similar for me. so it may be wrong but I thought it’s standard tuning. same era with wouldn’t be a lie song though. who knows…

I have never heard this song before. Evan D, who covers many of Ben's songs just sent me a notification that he had covered this song. It was done so well but I really wanted to hear the original so here I am.
I'm sure this song has deep meaning for Ben. He sings it with such passion. I have an idea what he is singing about and it's a sad time in his young life. Thank you Ben for sharing this.❤❤

Was this completely undiscovered until now? Didn't even know there was a bonus version of Games in the dark
Not completely undiscovered fella . People knew it existed but it wasn't accessible anywhere. The tracks that have come out today are from a version of games in the dark that Ben probably burned to cd himself and handed out as promo . Different to the 1s that got published, which had different versions of the songs, and no Jessica or Back to the river.
As far as I'm aware there were two little mugs who have always had the songs but didn't want to share them because they r mongs and having ownership of a Ben Howard song was one of only things they had going for them. Little mugs. . Judging from the Reddit post, one of the mugs finally sold their copy and the songs have finally seen light of day . Great day for all us REAL fans. Hope you enjoyed the track fella GAHH DUDE 😃 .

wow. never fort id hear this. thankyou so much fella. . curios to see how you got your hands on the track . its hard to explain how early ben howard makes me feel. long b4 all the hippy drum machine sh*t and celtic crap he made me endure a couple weeks ago. realy makes me miss the ex missus. we used to make love to the old pine ep and a lot of ben's early stuff when he was still a good artist like ed sheeran. when i listen to ben howad the rest of the world becomes quiet to me. lads groupchat pinging off arranging what boozer we're going to tonight. could've cashed out on an acca for £20 on bet365. but none of that matters. the phone is on silent and face down and the notifications just arnt important. today has been a great day because two other accas have come through so far and i'm experiencing old ben howard. REAL ben howard again for possibly the last time. I just weep...uncontrolled tears pouring down my face. hot and burning my cheeks, nose running. fists clenched. pint of carling washing down the bitter taste of upsetting memories. Convulsive shudders from deep inside, Releasing the hidden pains of my past...

@@barrybazjohnson6141 I agree completely, I remember the first time hearing Old Pine and thinking of my abusive uncle. The line "Oh, we slept like dogs down by the fire side" hits me hard, because I remember how my uncle kidnapped me to the woods when I was 12 years old. We slept there all night and he told me I'll never see my family again. Ben's first fiew albums saved my life. Miss the old Ben.

You kinda got to realise how boring it'd be for him making the same songs for 10 years though. Can't hold it against him y'know.
All comes down to preference... lots of people love CFTW, so I wouldn't really say Aaron Dessner "killed him". His music changes a lot with each album which keeps things interesting. I love all of his music, but I tend to gravitate to his newer music more
