In the dinner where she brought the kids after she lost her court case near the beginning of the movie, the actual Erin Brockovich played her waitress and the actual Ed was the older gentleman in the booth nest to theirs.
This movie was nominated for 5 Acadamy Awards, and Julia Roberts won for best actress. The crazy thing is that the cleanup from this is still going on today,. According to wikipedia, in 2019, the wells in Hinkley still had 100x the Chromium 6 that California allows maximum. PG&E said that it will take 30-50 years to clean up the contamination. Erin went on to assist with multiple other Chromium and other toxic chemical class action suits across the nation, and is still involved in the field as a consumer advocate. She is probably one of, if not THE best informed, most knowledgeable person alive today about Chromium 6 who isn't a trained scientist. I believe that some of the specific conversations were likely changed for entertainment value, but it seems that the basic details of the story are pretty historically correct. Erin Brokovich says on her website that she really did talk that way and dress that way, and that the movie is about 98% accurate.
Your reactions are priceless. Hadn't seen this movie in a long time. The acting, story, settlement, was really a grab your bootstraps buckle up success story. Julia Roberts owned that part.
@jacquelinedimattia774 Julia Roberts truly deserved her Academy Award for this iconic part. She also looked so lovely in that back and white gown accepting her award.
The funny thing is that people who knew Erin Brockivich thought that Julia Roberts was a terrible choice. At this time, she was seen as America's Sweetheart. Super Classy. Whereas Erin was brash and trashy (I say that in a good way as shown in the movie). But she nailed the role and everyone agreed that she was the perfect choice once they saw it.
A really great movie. I like the scene with Erin speech against the Pg lawyers. You should also react to A Civil Action and The Rainmaker two great lawyer movies like this one. Fyi the real Erin Brockovich appears in the movie as the blonde waitress at the start of the movie.
CLASS ACTION with Mary Mastriantonio and Gene Hackman. ABSENCE OF MALICE with Paul Newman and Sally Fields, although it's not quite a courtroom drama - it very much fits into ERIN B's genre. Courtroom dramas have made for some of best films: ANATOMY OF A MURDER with Jimmy Stewart, 12 ANGRY MEN with 'everyone' about a Jury Room, not a courtroom; and my favorite WITNESS FOR THE PROSECUTION with is a grand mystery wrapped in a courtroom.
This adage about profit for the shareholders evolved about the same time the Glass-Steagall legislation was eviscerated allowing banks to use depositors money for purposes previously outlawed since the Roosevelt administration. Total b.s. fed to us by investment bankers.
also in the same scene at the diner, the real Ed was also sitting behind Julia Roberts. its also funny that they've switched names for the movie. the real Erin's waitress name on her nametag says Julia
Could you imagine walking into your local bank with a cheque that big and asking to make a deposit into an account that has probably never had more than a couple of thousand dollars in, just to see their reaction would be priceless.
Erin just needed to be a little nicer to her boss, ya know! I mean nobody owes her anything but I get it she a had hard life. I love this movie and the way it turned for her and especially Ed Masery. Ok what you got next for us? 😅
“If you’ve got ‘em, use ‘em.” If you’ve got ‘em they’ve already worked their witchery, haven’t they? Even in an emergency, necklaces are basically hypno-pendulums with a big, shiny “LOOK HERE!” trap at one end!
From what I understand, the legal stuff is pretty accurate but the personal life stuff is very simplified (which makes sense, since that wasn't the focus of the film).
Congratulations on the baby! Maybe in a few years you’ll have as many children as Erin. 😮🎉 PS-this movie is very accurate. Great movie and another great reaction.
@@lisalivingston6473 She had a healthy baby boy on September 23rd. It was briefly lost to the streets but my understanding is that he’s back home now. 😀
25:38 "There's a _downside._ PG&E will submit a _demur,_ and if the judge agrees with _them,_ he'll dismiss our _case,_ PG&E will have no reason to _settle,_ and it's all over." But, I mean, if PG&E _corporate_ knew what PG&E Hinkley was doing, then they were _complicit,_ and if they _didn't,_ then they were _negligent._ Surely, either way, they're on the _hook_ for something.
40:39 "As I was saying... um... I decided that, uh... the figure you _proposed_ was, uh... inappropriate. So I _increased_ it." By how many orders of magnitude, Ed?
If you enjoyed this there are some other pretty good films on the subject. Lawyers vs. knowingly negligent companies. The Rainmaker. A Civil Action, Dark Water to name a few. Good job!
This is a really great film. It's amazing what the human spirit and some determination and drive can do. Excellent performances all around, and Aaron Eckhart is really an underrated actor IMO, even though some of his roles are a bit hokey at times. Albert Finney (RIP) also did a fantastic job in this.
13:40 "She left for a whole _week?"_ I've gotten the impression she was supposed to _arrange_ to go investigate something. Just _asking_ Masry was not enough, because he was _preoccupied_ at the time. I've gotten the impression she should've filled out some kind of form to put in her _file_ that tells people what's going on with her. Then she probably should've kept some kind of record about how she could be _reached_ while this was going on. Well behaved women seldom make history, but doing _anything_ with the resources of an _office_ depends on being a team player. You make moves that affect other _people,_ you need to make sure they _know_ about those moves.
2 million still seems too small. If the judge awarded 330 million and the lawyer takes 40%, that’s 142 million for the lawyer and Erin only got 2 million.
They were partnered with Kurt Potter. He will have taken a big chunk. Other members of staff will also have received bonuses Ed Masry didnt snaffle it all
33:14 Why is Miss Brockovich not present, here? This _other_ young lady is trying to get their testimony down in _legalese,_ which I understand is _necessary,_ but this family doesn't _know_ this woman. Miss Brockovich, I think it's safe to say, they have accepted has their best interests at heart but this woman is a _stranger_ to them.
In the dinner where she brought the kids after she lost her court case near the beginning of the movie, the actual Erin Brockovich played her waitress and the actual Ed was the older gentleman in the booth nest to theirs.
And the funny part is. Look at the nametag that the real Erin was wearing in the dinner. It said...Julia!!😂😅
Furthermore, the judge handling the "demur" hearing was the ACTUAL judge that oversaw the real-life case, just re-enacting his role!
That is just freaking awesome.....I had no idea, but it say a lot about the real life people to be here in this movie..... Thank you for sharing....

She went to Palestine Ohio to help those involved in that disaster. What a true hero!

@canadianviking7846 I caught Erin's cameo, but I'll have to go back and see Ed. I missed that as many times as I've seen this movie!
its also a funny little detail that her name tag says "Julia", like Erin and Julia switched names for the movie.

Corporate greed infuriates me. Especially when innocent people get hurt. These plaintiffs deserved EVERYTHING they rec'd.
