- This week we find ourselves sailing on anchor, visiting the endangered humpback dolphins in Tin Can Bay and sailing to Pelican Bay ready to cross the Wide Bay Bar the following morning. Sloppy seas made for a wet bar crossing but we made it unscathed only to encounter contrary winds for our journey south to New South Wales. Video filmed in September 2019.

It's hard to put into words the emotional happiness I feel watching your intro. Well done!
As the captain of a destroyer I had a serious adventure in the English Channel in October 87 ... we gave a lee to assist a lifeboat to rescue the crew of a yacht when hurricane force winds struck the south coast of England, causing widespread damage.
None of the computers or forecasters had predicted that event. In fact, a BBC weatherman (Michael Fish) had chuckled about a call he had received from a woman asking about the hurricane .... “there’s no hurricane” he said, live on TV. And he’s never been allowed to forget it!

It was such a pleasure spending so much time in the boat with you two this time. For this landlubber though it was a bit daunting to see the wide, wide horizons in the Wide Bay Bar, almost like the open sea. Don't anyone take Troy's navigational skills for granted!

I sailed the sandy straits and tin can bay in 1990 - or I scraped the tin can bay end to be more precise. Up to that stage I didn’t realise I could multi task - sail & careen 😂

This part of the US we are well aware of the weather bureau and their foibles. A few years ago we waited for them to certify a tornado touchdown, kinda easy when the tree in the front yard is tied up in a knot. Left it that way to see how it would grow out..
Phew, glad I'm not tasked with predicting the path of those storms. They seem pretty crazy.

My ex-brother-in-law was a USAF meteorologist and then worked in the commercial power system for a bit. He once told me that anything more than a day out started to get sketchy and got worse the farther out you got, anything past 5 days was a wild guess. The best forecast was tomorrow will be just like today, you've got a 50-50 shot.
Yeah, like I said later, we sympathize with them but are amazed at the number of products out there recommending 7-10 day forecasts! I am a big believer in human assets when it comes to very complicated systems. Grandad's bunion never failed!

I lived in Tin Can. And I was there for the tail end of a couple of cyclones. Each time a bunch of boats in that anchorage would end up on the flats. There was, though maybe not now, an old Ferry out there and that dragged it's mooring both times too. I'm glad I got to see that because it informs my anchoring strategies. Actually it informed my choice of boat too.

Ah, yes. The weather forecast. There's a definite, possible maybe that we may get some kind of weather sooner or later.
An explanation by way of an apology for my tantrum in the last video. A lot of "T & A videos" have proliferated on You Tube nowadays. The only USP is cheesecake; sailing as well as other channels. The suspicion that you (FRS) might have had to alter your content because of these really got my goat. BTW, showing the wildlife biological names is really cool.
We have explained our ethos on our live chat videos. Number of views isn't our priority.

Any chance you'd do more explanation of wind direction's effect on course, and how to sail into, and ahead of a wind please, Troy? I love watching your adventures, been following avidly for many months - but I'm no sailor - I'd like to understand how the wind moves your boat! I'm retired mechanic - auto, aircraft, marine, agricultural.

Love your portaboat. With you storing it and then opening it up to use on a fairly regular basis have you ever had problems with the seams leaking? If so, what did you use to reseal the seams? It would also be neat to see you set it up as you get ready to use it. Great videos. Love them!!!
Still going strong 5 years later. Some slight seeping along the middle where sand pushes in but it goes away with a strong hose.

James Gleick's book titled 'Chaos: Making a New Science' makes for fascinating reading, and clearly explains why our weather forecasting ability will never get much (if any) better than it already is, no matter how much computer power we throw at the problem.
BTW, T & A videos is a phrase I learned on You Tube.

Yes but in current that strong, they get overwhelmed
I enjoy your videos. I notice that you are not using a boom vang, Is there a reason for that?
We put on a preventer when the boom swings beyong the range of our traveller. It does a good job of taking out twist in the main without the increased forces of the vang due to leverage.

ramdynebix It’s a lesser part, but still important. We’ve always used “dead cats”, but our sound has never been as clear as theirs. Might try that mic they have.

Hi, it is so good, to see NORMAL PEOPLE without big, modern Boats with all the whistles and bells. I can't stand them. Reality of most Citziens is, that we are only normal People, with normal income and thus not able to buy so big, so new, so with everything all those rich guys can have. I see you went past Motor Sailing for Old Dudes at 8.56 and I thought they stop feeding Dolphins as what had happened at Monkey Mia so many years ago.
The pilchard virus?
Free Range Sailing ,no ,it had to do with people feeding the dolphins and the dolphins got used to it and forgot how to find food or hunt for fish, so when the people stop coming for some time the dolphins died. This was some 20 years or so ago. So now I think they only feed then very little but I am not up to date with it.
Free Range Sailing ,I found this for you....
In the 1960s fishers returning to Monkey Mia began sharing their catch with some of the dolphins. Over the years trust grew with more dolphins being fed at the jetty and later the beach.
Researchers arrived and have been continuously studying the dolphins since 1984. Among the researchers’ findings was that the mortality rate among the calves of beach visiting dolphins was significantly higher than that of other dolphins in Shark Bay. This led to the development of guidelines to ensure the young of beach visiting dolphins were raised with as much chance of survival as other wild dolphins.
The Parks and Wildlife Service manages the Monkey Mia dolphin experience according to these guidelines by regulating dolphin feeding, maintaining the dolphin experience area, careful recruitment of new dolphins, and regulating boat encounters.
Regulating Dolphin Feeding
Between 1987 and 1994, 92% (11 of 12) nursing calves born to hand-fed females died. The high mortality rate was attributed to a combination of overfeeding, indiscriminate feeding and dolphins spending too much time at the beach rather than caring for their calves. Regulations were introduced to address this:
Only mature females with good survival skills are fed.
Males are not fed because they tend to be more aggressive.
The dolphins are never fed more than a third of their daily food requirements - they still have to hunt for most of their food.
Only fresh local fish hunted by dolphins in the wild are given to them. This is to prevent dolphins from developing preferences for ‘foreign’ foods.
To encourage the dolphins to spend more time doing their normal activities, feeding only takes place in the morning.
There are no set feeding times so the dolphins do not become conditioned and alter their natural wild behaviour.
To avoid stress during feeding the dolphins must not be touched and the fish must be readily available when they want to eat.
People are not allowed to feed dolphins from boats, the jetty or the shore. It is illegal to feed dolphins and other wildlife without authorisation anywhere in Western Australia.
Since these regulations were introduced in 1995 only 23% (3 of 13) of calves born to provisioned females have died.

Recruitment of New Dolphins
Five dolphins are in the feeding program. 2016 was the first time in 11 years a new dolphin was introduced into the program. Kiya had been going to the beach since she was born in 1997 but was only introduced to the feeding program when one of the old dolphins died.

And when you sailing in Norway with all the mountains and fjords, the winds literally can change 180’ from up there to down at the water.

We often make our weather calls on cloud structure when the forecast is wrong. That's why we knew it was time to go in despite the forecast.
Like parrots, magpies are one of the few species of birds that can learn to talk.

By the time you grow up, most meteorologists (weather persons) will be paid based on results - get the predictions wrong and you don't eat for a week.
Just think about how much a weather forecast that turns out to be wrong can actually cost....

In a bucket, a waterfall or at a laundromat, depending on where we are and how rich we are for water.
My local forecasters could't predict their next $hit if they ate a whole box of Ex Lax. I have a theory as to why that is but it would offend those who believe in global warming and Im not here to be a rabble rouser : )

I hate Queensland northerlies, they make the bay miserable in a boat, they bring in the excessively hot summer days and seem to blow all summer.......... except when you really want them ie sailing south :)
