  • On the occasion of the 175th anniversary of railways in Denmark, Märklin/Trix launched a big surprise: a totally newly tooled model of the legendary DSB Class E steam locomotive. This is an excellent choice since these engines are so iconic for the steam era in my home country. The model represents a specific locomotive, namely E 991, which can today be found at the Danish Railway Museum in Odense. Actually, the model is labelled as era VI since it is an exact replica of the museum locomotive. The video turned out to be a little longer than my usual products so here is a list of the different chapters:
    00:00 Intro
    00:36 Unboxing
    03:03 Detailing
    04:57 Running
    06:58 Sounds and lights
    08:20 Layout shots
    09:10 Outtro
    The background story for the prototype is as follows: In the mid-1930s the Danish State railways (DSB) faced a rising need for new locomotives for heavy duty trains. DSB had already announced that “steam was dead” and the future was in diesel traction, however, the problem was that no diesel locomotive with sufficient power was available at the time. Then DSB received an offer from Sweden too good to refuse - Denmark could buy 11 secondhand pacific compound express locomotives for the price of the scrap metal. The locomotives were left jobless in Sweden because of the ongoing electrification of the SJ-main lines. The locomotives were originally built in the years 1914-1916 by Nyqvist & Holm AB. They soon showed excellent running characteristics and impressive top speeds and were well suited for the relatively flat Danish landscape. But that was not the end of it. War and occupation in the years 1940-45 meant that DSB urgently needed even more steam locomotives and rather than spending time on new designs it was decided to simply build copies of existing types. That meant 25 new class E locomotives this time build by Frichs A/S in Aarhus, Denmark. Compared to the Swedish version, the Danish-built locomotives had an additional dome, enlarged cab side windows and welded steel tenders. Massive shortcomings in materials and production challenges due to the war put Frichs behind schedule so delivery of the last of the 25 locomotives did not take place until 1950. In fact, E 999 became the last new-built steam locomotive in Denmark. In the 1950s, which is the era I am modelling, the Class E continued to prove itself as a powerful locomotive for both express and freight trains. Most class Es stayed in service until the end of the steam era in Denmark in 1970. A small handful of Class Es have survived in Denmark, Sweden and the UK, including E 991, which is the locomotive featured in this video.
    Please visit my blog www.sundborg.wordpress.com for my on my plans for a layout set in Denmark in the mid-1950s.
    The Märklin/Trix model is not the first H0-scale version of this iconic locomotive. Models of Danish class E and Swedish class F locomotives were introduced by Danish manufacturer Heljan in October 2008. Five years later in 2013 an improved version of the class E was released. The improvements were much welcomed since not all of the original models had satisfactorily running characteristics. Mine is actually running quite well as can be seen in this video: • DSB Class E from Helja...

      Enig i at det er et flot lokomotiv Märklin/Trix der har banket sammen. Desværre er det kun et diorama og ikke et helt anlæg der ses i videoen 🫤 Tak for kommentaren!

    another superb video of a masterpiece, with the most chillax soundtrack.
    isn't it funny: the stunning detail on a stupendous loco model, with those enormous flanges as a nod to operationing reliability. looks almost a little reminiscent of trix Express.
    I'm sure it works reliably on the trix track, but realistically it does limit your track choices, I can see it going bumpity bump over anything lower than code 100. I might be wrong though... it obviously runs on your fantastic layout...

      Interesting point. Actually, I don’t have an operational layout. The landscape in the video is just a diorama 😒 You are right - the “pizza cutter style” wheels are typical Märklin/Trix and this is the first Trix loco that I own, so it remains to be seen if the loco can cope with say Tillig Elite which is normally my preferred track. Glad you liked the video - and the music 😀🎶

      @@SundborgModelRailway love the music brother: you have good taste in all your videos.
      Excellent choice with your track: I must admit I have tillig TT, but I am aware that HO elite is meant to be superb.
      From memory some models a while ago had 'clip on' flanges to enable operation on trix express track, and vice versa. Seeing as trix is meant for 2 rail dc it's a shame that shallower flanges or even wheels couldn't be catered for.
      Tbh, the loco is soooooo gorgeous it would like awesome just sitting there on your diorama...
      You have excellent taste my friend.

    Dejlig video af en overraskelsesmodel fra Märklin/Trix 😊 Det ser godt ud med alle de medfølgende dele monteret - desværre er flere af dem mest egnet til vitrinemodel - så når den skal ud at køre på din bane en dag skal en del pilles af 😊

      Glad for, at du syntes om videoen! I lige måde kan jeg så sige. Har set din film af E 991 i Kælderkøbing flere gange. Du får rigtigt udnyttet lydeffekterne. Ja, Märklin/Trix er ret klare i mælet mht detaljerne: De er til vitrinebrug. Nogle af dem, så som banerømmerne burde vel kunne finde anvendelse. Vi får se når jeg engang får bygget et anlæg at køre på 😊

    Thank you for the nice video. I am new bie in model trains from India. I liked this loco. Is smoke unit installed in built? Is this loco good for regular running on the tracks or this is better a showcase model?

    • @SundborgModelRailway
      @SundborgModelRailway  Год назад

      Thank you. I am glad you liked the video. The model is absolutely for regular running, but you can add some extra details which can give the model some difficulties if you have tight curves on your layout. The smoke generator is build in from the factory, but I am personally not a fan of smoke on models - I simply don't think it looks very realistic. Welcome to a great hobby!

    When the loco and the tank is in tight mode what is the minimum radius for safety driving?

    • @SundborgModelRailway
      @SundborgModelRailway  2 года назад

      Good question! I simply don’t know. I fear it is rather large, but I don’t have a layout to test it on. In “model mode”, i.e. furthest apart the loco should be able to navigate curves down to 36 cm radius.

    Hello,
    I have purchased this from Germany to India. I observed that the right head lamp on tendor not working. It is very difficult to resend the model to seller in Germany from India. Is there any way I can fix the tendor light ?

    • @SundborgModelRailway
      @SundborgModelRailway  Год назад

      Sorry to hear about your problems. It is difficult to say what the problem is - it could be a loose electrical connection or maybe a defect LED. It could also be an error in the decoder. If you drive digital you can try "reset factory setting" to check if it is a decoder problem. Marklin/Trix usually have very thorough quality control procedures in place so it is possible that the model was damage during transport. Sorry, that I can not be more helpful.

Not sure if they solve one problem and in return transit it will create some other. Let us see what they both replies. We have to pay huge customs for model trains in India (almost 80%). Really becoming non affordable business in Inida.

      That is very well spotted! These locos were originally built in Sweden just prior to WW I and the designers were clearly influenced by both contemporary European and American locos. The Pacific-style and the semi-vanderbilt designed tender are both evidently US-inspired.
