    Stop going to college. Get good at what you want to do by experience. College is a waste of time for those not going to be doctors or lawyers. I got caught into that idea that college was going to set me up for life. Big mistake that was. I was sold the story that that was the way. I have more than 3 friends who never went to college and earn 6 figures because they got a head start and got really good at what they wanted to do. Don't waste 4 years on more English, Science, math classes that you don't need. Stick to the path that will bring you results. Great experience beats a good degree!

    I don’t understand people. Why is it so important to try to impress people? I make $50K/year and have no debt. I survived the housing bubble, divorce, even a six month long absence from work due to an injury. I drive a 26 year old Volvo as my daily driver. I don’t have cable. I pay $600/month child support (up to date on that). I own a small home worth around 45-50k completely paid off. I have savings and investments. I learned how to maintain my car and home myself except for major repairs. It’s not that hard people. Sure I don’t impress anyone at a traffic light and I have given up on dating (most women do not want a frugal man). I even manage to vacation for two weeks every year. People need to be humble.

I am now retired and still debt free. It never ceases to amaze me how so many people can't put pencil to paper and do simple math. Nobody and I mean nobody should go to college without a game plan. Reality check: if the wife gets a job making 40k a year, that is not 40k towards debt. That is 40k gross.
    Google says Pennsylvania average for a child that age is 10k a year.
    If her job pushes them into the 22% tax bracket before deductions, her share is about 8k Plus the cost of a car, gas, clothes appropriate for her new job, etc., etc. She'll net 23k on that 40k after the 1st year (unless deductions).
    Not saying to not do it, but go in with you eyes wide open. And you have to make sure your earnings are well past the break even cost. (I.e. don't spend 10k on child care for a 10k job)

  • @chasa4347
    @chasa4347 6 лет назад +35

    I'm guessing he used student loans for more than books and tuition. Also, one needs to look at the market before picking a major. In the 90's my baby sister got a pharmacy degree, pharmacists were in demand, and an excellent career. Since then, many schools cranked out pharmacy mills, increased the requirements (need a masters now) and pharmacy over the internet along with Walmart pharmacy has made a good career so so. Do your homework in advance, don't chase your passion if your passion doesn't pay the bills.
    I appreciate that Dave didn't tell him how stupid he was, as that wasn't needed here.

    • @sbrazenor2
      @sbrazenor2 6 лет назад +3

      Any hot career path turns out like that. Demand for the degree increases as people look at high wages, then schools start pumping out graduates to meet the market demand for the positions, and then you're looking at a diluted market. Companies find more efficient solutions to serve customers, often cutting out jobs. It's common and a lot of industries have been impacted.
      I decided to just get back to being a truck driver because of issues like that. (I have a degree in Finance and have worked in the field.) Trucking always has a spectre of that next big issue in the market, which never turns into a problem.
      First, 53' trailers were going to ruin the business by cutting the need for drivers, and that didn't work. Then double and triple trailers, that didn't work. Then rail based intermodal was the killer, and it didn't work. The attrition in the market has actually caused an increase in demand despite all of the labor saving shifts. They're treatening automation, but that's at best 15-20 years out for practical use and jobs like mine are not compatible with that tech because I interface with people and dock in strange places and congested areas.
      You have to always choose a career that's difficult to replace humans in.

    • @chasa4347
      @chasa4347 6 лет назад +1

      good points Sean. My career has been in process control. Not that my job couldn't be off-shored for cheaper talent, but because of industrial accidents, regulations have kept a US workforce in place. Would anyone else like to go to the City or State where it's easy for everyone to get 100K a year as Dave makes it seem?

      If you put your mind to it you can make 6 figures. You can do luxury car sales at entry level make 6 figures

      @@hands3013 We both can name a hundred or more jobs or revenue streams that people can make 100K a year at, to my point very few will be as easy as Dave makes it seem. My Union contract has us at 35$ per hour or 72,800$ per year excluding overtime, if I deliver pizzas on the side and make 1500$ per month as Dave often suggests that still would leave me about 10,000$ shy.
