- Learning how to be successful in the music industry when you're still in school is no easy task. Your parents typically won't be able to help you get a record deal and it can be intimidating just trying to get started in the music business. What do you do first? Who should you listen to? How do you not give up on music when your family tells you to be realistic? These are all things that no one tells you, but you need to know as early as possible. I needed you when I was 15! I gave up my music career out of fear and 27 years later things are very different and in a better way for new emerging artists, no more knocking on doors and sending demos to labels. My daughter is 13 and wanting a career in music and I'm all for supporting her in everything she wants to do and we are starting slowly with a home studio. We are from the UK and I feel the music scene here is as great as it has always been. I love your tough-love approach. Too many people sugarcoat things for 16 years old. Everything takes work! Make music, attend music events, festivals, open mic nights, school bands, anything to get you out there! I am loving all your videos! :)

I am in a similar situation now, I’m 18 and a senior in high school. At a certain point you gotta detach yourself from your parents’ ideas I think. To become an adult you need to. Your videos have helped me figure out what I need to do when I get out of high school. But sadly I’m in so many high level courses that if I shift my focus too much, I fail and probably won’t keep my scholarship.

I've been there bro. You need to break out of that indoctrination of your parents and serve yourself and your needs bro! You are young af and if you know that music is what makes you the most happy- then you gotta do it. I realize that you may have many high level courses, but you gotta make sure you spend even just a little time each day on your music or what matters to YOU the most. Don't put your passions on hold, you don't want an old grumpy man regretting that you never went ham at this right? Then work more!!!

I'm glad you got to the point about record labels. We don't need them anymore. That's the beauty of the internet. We have the power now. Like you said, the most important thing to do is taking action. Wishing and having passion mean nothing if you don't put in the work. My IG has been growing from working consistently on it from 2018. I gotta start putting up stuff on my RUclips though.
I’m gonna make more songs more often. That’ll help. The thing about youtube is every time I make a video I gain 10-15 subs. But then I take a month to make another one and my channel goes in decline. I need to keep the hype going. I’ve had 110 listeners from 11 countries on Spotify from the only 3 songs I released on there. It was only half a year and I was EXTREMELY surprised. I think I’m gonna make it. I hope I can stay motivated

I'd like to suggest to the person in the UK to mock what we are doing. My daughter that is. Lots of content, build an audience. Make instagram cover, Originals in posts and IGTV and do what you love and do it often and you will get attention from the world around you. Meaning opportunities will come and in certain ways (if your engaged) people will come from places you don't expect. "waiting" for someone to find you is not really going to happen. Do something everyday. Oh forgot to ad the IG account for you to model. It's working. We also use distrokid to distribute content that isn't even always recorded that well... Who cares. This was a life changing video. I live in Colombia and even tho I’m currently trying to build an audience and learning music, I’ve always complained a lot about being stuck in this country and stressing out trying to figure out how I was gonna get out of here to ACTUALLY START building my career. But you’re right! We have to do the best with what we have now, with that meaning I need to shift into a mindset of focusing on releasing more stuff using what I have.

Additionally, if you don't have engineering software and money is the issue there's plenty of really good free options to start with. I use Studio One 4. I've upgraded to a paid for version, but I started with the free version, it gives a lot of good features for no money, the stock plugins are pretty much all you'll need to start making music and learn how to mix on your own.

I’m in High School, and I make sure to keep music as a side job, and within the month I’ve been doing music I think I’ve done really good
I've started making music and released some of it. as for marketing I haven't done much of that, but I have a lot to work on when it comes to music quality (mixing, recording, production, lyrics) all of that stuff. But once I can make professional sounding tracks I will start marketing like crazy. hopefully I'll be able to gain a massive buzz.
