    You guys are good planner right from the beginning. You're an example of "living the best of your retirement life" in the Philippines. You built your dream house out from your retirement savings and now, you're debt free and reaping the fruit of your hard work in the USA. If you're still living in the West, that would be impossible, so kudos to both of you. Hoping more good couples will be blessed like you guys do. God bless.

    I live in Mactan Newtown - I'm poor by foreigner standards at 70,000 pesos a month. My monthly living obligation is 30,000 - and I budget 6,000 a week for food. (24,000) Visa is 1,000 a month - giving me 15,000 to spend on women and entertainment. Much cheaper to have one woman to live with you full time than you have a revolving door - but women and entertainment will eat a lot if you're not careful. Life is good - I live a life of resort style luxury.

    You may not pay rent but you will pay property tax which is 2% in the City and 1% in the province on a 10mill php property value is 18kphp/m for the City and 9kphp/m for the province.

    • @buildingthephilippines
      @buildingthephilippines  Год назад +3

      What would the rent be on 10m property? Maybe 50k per month as compared to 9k per year.

    • @mikeheap7978
      @mikeheap7978 Год назад +3

      @@buildingthephilippines yes I'd say 50k php/ month in the province, the property tax outside the City is 1% which would be 100k/yr or 8.5k/m.
      I only mention this as it's an expense you didn't include (as well as repairs and maintenance costs and the same for your vehicles), not to be difficult Sir. You don't live for free just because you own and built your property which looks very nice btw, property tax, ongoing general maintenance + replacement costs needs to be budgeted for. Only my opinion but I'd be setting aside 15 -20k php/month for these costs that will increase as your very nice property ages. What you have is exactly what I would do, look to Cavite or northern Luzon province to build (where the climate is more forgiving).
      FYI I have been liviing in a 60sqm 1 bed rented penthouse apartment with access to a large roof garden and swimming pool in Makati for 6 years. A 2 bed 110sqm recently came up for sale in my building for 15mill php, it made no financial sense to buy, property tax @ 2% was 300k/yr, maintenance juice is 15k/month, maintenance and repair costs of say 10k/month, total cost 50kphp/month + 15mill to buy versus 35kphp/month rent, juice included. Also very little capital growth left in Makati real estate as the markets already vastly over inflated.

    I'm sorry that you're spending almost $1,000 a month in the Philippines, and in a rural area at that, not even Makati, BGC or Greenbelt).
    As I have watched your videos, a couple of them (the one where you guys had to pick up your laundry among other videos).
    I was born in the Philippines and was brought up by very simple parents (my father was born in mainland China, so you could imagine how difficult his life was. My late mom was from Negros Occidental.
    So, basically, I'm here to simply share how you might be able to save money & hopefully, it's still doable, now that you have a luxurious life having a swimming pool that is kept alive by a pump which basically is connected to the electricity. This is one of those things that will drain your money. With all those tall grasses around your house and rainy season for the rest of the year up to next year, your swimming pool might even be a breeding ground for mosquitoes/ I'm just saying 🙂
    Another one is, I wish you could have had gutters installed which will be the source of your water to flush the toilet and perhaps to use for cleaning.
    I wish you could have had water tanks installed where the gutters would fill up during the rainy season in the Philippines and later on will be used to water your garden. You then don't have to pay so much for water. Am I right?
    Another is, since you have a wide land, you could have thought of planting fruit-bearing trees as well as veggies that you guys would often use for cooking. Since it rains for about 6-8 months, a greenhouse could have been thought of too.
    Raise, chickens that you could convert into food, of course.
    Laundry... Definitely a killer there. Just imagine the gasoline you will be using for your tiny scooter to go to the laundry place and come back + how much do you guys spend for the laundry? If it's just the folding that you are after, you guys can definitely do that. You guys are still young.
    Hope these all made sense, even a bit, Greg & Wilma.
    I wish you the best

      Hello, registration for a vehicle is $50 for 3 years. Insurance for full coverage depends on cost of car. Ours was $800 first year and goes down every year as the car depreciates. Tax also depends on size of land and house size. We don't know yet as we are waiting for the assessment. Our land tax is $1.25 a year.

    Hi Greg & Wilma. Thank you for openly sharing your monthly budget. Did you buy or lease your land? As a Canadian, my understanding is I can’t buy land. Are there opportunities to lease land short or long term perhaps in the cooler mountains of Dauin? I’m contemplating building a tiny home - perhaps 25~30% the size of yours without a pool. What would be a realistic budget to build a very simple, low cost 300~400 square foot, open-floor-plan home concrete or even treated bamboo? Any idea?

During my first visit I hope to visit as many islands & places as possible on holiday and to look for suitable land & properties for sale and decide on where I would like to live permanently. I will take my time. Dauin is definitely on my list. My cash budget will be around 8-10 million Philippine pesos for land and house etc. I would love to be able to build a house to my own specifications but sadly Greg unlike yourself I know nothing about building a house or a swimming pool. Hence why I choose to buy a newly built modern Western style property or a Resale property. Greg your videos have been a great inspiration to me. Thank You. A few other areas if I missed needing to be added would be; vehicles insurance - house/property tax. The later taxes seem a little more confusing/involved to me - what I have gathered is they evaluate the value separately for the house it' self and property and then ad these 2 calculated % together to come up with a figure - is this true? thx

      Vehicle insurance goes by vehicles type and value of vehicle. $800 year one, $700 year two. Goes down each year. We don't have homeowners, will look into it (not sure it's even worth it). Taxes is one payment in January. However, our assessment has not been done yet. Municipal is in charge of assessing our entire properties worth. Our 2023 tax was 75 pesos of $1.20. Our 2024 tax we don't know. I'm guessing around $20 once we get our assessment.

    Hello Greg and Wilma, love your channel. You remind me of myself and my wife. We are planning to retire in the Philippines in 5 years when my step son will be 17. However, with all the terrible things going on in the United States, we may make that decision sooner. We originally thought Tay Gay Tay would be idea as I like cooler weather. but in this video you mentioned it's cooler where you are. So that caught my attention. I will try to find an email for you so I can ask more questions and get some advice. You have the best channel on the subject of the Philippines. Oh by the way, my wife is also Filipina from Samar. Watching you and Wilma is like watching us in a mirror. (Not my real photo with the war paint) LOL

      Tagaytay is an expensive place almost like Manila. If you want a cheaper one, try Negros (like this vlog) and other areas in the provinces. You can live in a $1K budget but you must not spend for unnecessary things. Focus on what are the most important ones, just like Wilma and Greg

    informative video and the budget was much less than I expected. I was hoping if we relocated there , a family of 4 could life off 125k-150k per month. Your video gives me hope that its possible

    • @buildingthephilippines
      @buildingthephilippines  Год назад +1

      Yes, once you have settled in house, transportation, furniture, all household items then really you can live pretty cheap.

    • @mikeheap7978
      @mikeheap7978 Год назад +2

      Yes 100% a family of 4 could live comfortably for 125 - 150k/month no problem. 150k in Manila and 125k in the province depending on your own circumstances below. Factor in allowances for inflation which currently stands at 8% in Philippines.
      I'm a single retired 56 year old and I've lived in Makati, Manila for 6 years with my 3 rescue cats. I spend about 90k php/m but I eat out a lot, not too much drinking and have a girlfriend.
      Things that affect your cost of living most would be location, a need to own your own transport, how many nights out, how stuck on western food for shopping you are and any existing health issues.
      I live in Makati, Manila and give you mh costs which you could reduce by 20% for the province.
      For a family of 4 with say 3 bedroom house in Manila your looking at 50 -70k/m php depending on location (You may need to furnish).
      The benefit of Manila is I don't need my own transport, I use taxi's which are cheap as chips, 250php for 40min journey.
      Meals out you can budget 350php/pers in the day and 600php/pers at night.
      I spend 5000php/m for 1 on food shopping, I buy my veggies, salad and fruit from the wet market which is 50% cheaper than supermarkets.
      Healthcare is much cheaper here in the Philippines than the West but medicine can be similar costs unless you buy local drug brands.

    Amazing that adults well on in life need to be educated as though they’re just graduates out of high school or college. Sad really. They should be embarrassed to not know or consider all costs of life for today, tomorrow or the future.
    Need to consider the fact that your power goes down fairly often. That’s an inadvertent way to cut electric bills.
    In or on Hawaii, I think the optimum living elevation is in the 700’ above sea level range. Where as you are is always cooler than lower and not too high to always be cool. Nice breeze level.

    850 wouldn’t even cover rent where I live. You guys are getting a great deal. Two smart people that planned right for their retirement years, kudos to you two, enjoy it. You didn’t mention what you budget for medical…you said that you should budget for medical, but you didn’t elaborate, that would increase your budget. I think budgeting $100 per person each month for medical is a good middle of the ground cost. Put that money back every month and never touch it.

    • @buildingthephilippines
      @buildingthephilippines  Год назад +1

      Thanks for the comment. We are self insured, so just have money in an account that we won't touch. Its enough to cover any major medical problem here probably times 4. Its a pay as you go society, so need money up front just to be admitted. Credit card will work as well. Great question.

      @@buildingthephilippines I had a friend that had a heart procedure at University hospital in Manila and the total was almost 30k, not all medical is cheap, it depends on location and how good the hospital is. You should be putting money back, you are getting old and your body will start breaking more often and the medical attention you will need only gets worse

    It’s a reasonable amount of monthly expenses. We live in Iloilo,in a town called Oton, our expenses ranges to 40-55k pesos. Once a week of treating ourselves to eat out. Most of the time I do cook. Regarding insurances, we both don’t have an insurance but we set aside an emergency funds. Our first year in Philippines I always list down our expenses but later part I get rid of it. Thanks for the good video

I have done a few videos on where we bought lots of rice for community's as well as specific poor families (rice, can goods and medicine). We did get some negative comments stating our channel was heading towards asking viewers for money. If you have watched our videos you will see that we don't. We decided to not video anymore assistance videos. Great question.

      You don’t have to broadcast what you do for charity. Obviously it comes from the heart and not a way to show you off- oh look I give this much to get some recognition. The bigger donors don’t care and in fact don’t like to show off when it comes to their philanthropic activities.
