I loved when he commented that the thing he loved about Mamamoo was that they “sing bigger than themselves” and that’s just such a beautiful compliment and really speaks to who Mamamoo is as artists and as a group. Shoutout to dad he’s doing great! Thank you for reacting 💗💗

Great comments, kpop pops! I had never thought about the old school drum sound on Piano Man until you mentioned it. So perceptive.
Mamamoo debuted in 2014 with the first song, Mr Ambiguous. The song was originally titled Mamamoo and it was written for Quincy Jones by Kim Dohoon, the co-CEO of Mamamoo's label RBW (Rainbowbridge World). The girls performed it for Quincy when he was in Seoul for a concert while they were still trainees and didn't have a name for their group yet. QJ decided not to use the song so Kim Dohoon changed the title to Mr Ambiguous (Ememoho in Korean - sounds like Mamamoo), altered the lyrics to fit the new title and gave it to his new girl group for their debut. The group took on the original song title as their name. All the credits in the MV are fake. The people seen in the MV are all celebs making cameos as a favor to Kim Dohoon to help draw attention to the first group to debut under his tiny startup agency. The prank was pulled by Baek Ji Young, a famous, highly respected ballad singer who was ostensibly there to give the girls tips prior to their debut, hence the tears when she ripped into them. RBW lacked the staff and financial resources to promote Mamamoo properly, not to mention their almost total lack of clout in an industry monopolized by the "Big 3" agencies at that time and the cameos were the best they could do for them. RBW couldn't even afford a choreographer so the girls did their own choreography and busked around the streets of Seoul to promote themselves.
Piano Man was the first song I heard by MMM back in 2016. I was checking out kpop out of curiosity and, being an old fart, the bubblegum pop by the other girl groups wasn't my style but Piano Man was right up my jazz loving alley. I was also impressed that Moonbyul rapped impressively over the swing beat, by the use of real instruments, and their obvious vocal talent.
I'm not a big fan of the generic guitar riff in Starry Night so I'm not surprised that it reminded you of another song. Starry Night was the first single in Mamamoo's four album series 4 Season 4 Color. Each album had a theme season & color of course and each main single was about a stage of love matching the season & color in a four part relationship cycle. There's a lot more to it but that's the basic structure of the 4S4C concept. 4 Season 4 Color is the most complex, ambitious project ever done by a girl group.
Starry Night was from the Spring/Yellow album and the stage of love was Attraction, in this case lingering attraction for a past lover.
Egotistic was the main single from the 2nd 4S4C album and it represented Summer, Red and Passion. You mentioned the Spanish diaspora theme of the MV, ranging from the Spanish guitars, wardrobe choices, the jaguar (a Latin American big cat, natch) to the car that looks like it belongs in Havana or East LA. In the MV each member expresses her take on Red personality traits and the emotional theme Passion in the context of a fiery breakup song where they're telling an egotistic jerk to take a hike, so that's why we see Hwasa staring down the jaguar to express Wild & Fierce, Solar giving come hither looks into the camera, wearing revealing outfits and swinging seductively on the pole to express Sexy, Seductive and Provocative and Wheein playing a hot-tempered, vindictive, badass bitch on wheels who wants to burn his guitar playing butt and dance in the flames lol.
Mamamoo isn't really underrated; I'd call them underappreciated. In the kpop industry they're generally acknowledged as the vocal gold standard among girl groups and they've had a very successful career as a group and as solo artists. Two examples: MMM was the first group to have all members chart on Billboard as solo artists while the group was still active as a unit, and MMM toured the US for the first time last year and joined TLC, Destiny's Child and the Spice Girls as the only girl groups to sell over 70K tickets on their debut US tour. However, despite their world class talent and success in S Korea, they're not nearly as well known on a global level as the most popular kpop groups and their album sales are a small fraction of the biggest groups so yeah, if they're not exactly underrated they're definitely underappreciated and imo they're taken for granted by kpop fans. I grew up loving the Supremes and got to see Diana Ross in the early 80's and it came as a bit of a shock when Mamamoo became my all time favorite girl group.
Since returning to Korea last summer after their world tour they've been focusing on solo and subunit projects. Currently Moonbyul and Wheein are on separate solo world tours and I'll see Wheein in Brooklyn on June 4. She just played the first of 8 US concerts in San Francisco yesterday. Moonbyul is touring Asia at the moment and hasn't announced dates & locations for the rest of the tour yet. Hwasa is doing a series of fanmeets and performances for her fans in Korea and East Asia. Solar just wrapped up promotions for a new solo album and will kick off her own solo world tour with a couple of shows in Seoul in two weeks.
I'd highly recommend checking out Solar's new EP Colours. She spelled it that way to emphasize Ours as a way of simultaneously celebrating diversity and community. Each of the six songs on the album is in a completely different genre or musical color and the EDM song Colors expresses the album concept and her overall message of self-love and respect & acceptance of others for their uniqueness and individuality by including the gender fluid dance troupe House of Love in the MV and live performances (not something you often see in a kpop MV or socially conservative S Korea). The main single But I is a mix of ballad and punkish rock and has a stunning MV that was shot in Mongolia. My favorite song on the album is called Blues and I'm pretty sure you'll like it too. There's no MV unfortunately but I can't wait to see how she performs it at her upcoming concerts. MMM almost always uses a live band for their Korean concerts and I'm hoping Solar brings a kickass band with a horn section and a fiery guitarist and maybe even a Supremes style trio of soulful backup singers for an extended arrangement of Blues that showcases her vocal pyrotechnics. MMM often rearranges their songs for concerts and special events like award shows and we never know what to expect next.
Hope you enjoy getting to know Mamamoo! They've got an extensive and extremely diverse discography that includes hundreds of songs, dozens of group, solo and subunit albums, and there are hundreds of hours of fantastic live performances available on yt. As any moomoo (MMM fan) will tell you, Mamamoo is best when they're live because of their amazing, always live vocals, charismatic stage presence and bff team chemistry. I should also mention that Mamamoo has the most songwriting credits of any girl group in kpop history so they're not just talented singers, rappers and performers (for example, Solar wrote or co-wrote the lyrics and music for 5 of the 6 songs on her new EP). They're involved in all creative aspects of their career including songwriting, choreography, styling and MV concepts and it's often said that Mamamoo are artists rather than teen idols and a woman group rather than a girl group. 😂

My jaw honestly dropped when you said Mr. Ambiguous was originally for Quincy Jones haha! I would always hear fans call them a "woman group" and I can honestly agree! There's an air to them that always convinced me of this. I always like hearing about small companies and their respective group(s) being able to have great success in such a cutthroat industry like kpop. They’re definitely deserving of their praise and more. I definitely agree with you that their popularity is much less so globally than domestically, which is unfortunate because their vocals are just SO GOOD!
I really appreciate all the information you gave us! I honestly wouldn’t have ever known that the name Mamamoo came from the song, which is a really neat thing to take it from! Also, the extensiveness of their album concepts is something I honestly wish I could see it from more groups, because that would let someone (the group members or the creative team) be even more creative than they’re usually allowed to be!

@@magiceca YW Lilith! Mamamoo has always gone their own way and marched to their own beat. I think that's a big reason they've always been one of the biggest shit magnets in kpop but I also think their success has helped to expand opportunities for the next generation of groups and artists, esp for women. They're seen as role models by younger idols as well as young women (and others!).
Imo the main reason almost all kpop groups stick to a narrow stylistic range is that the agencies form the groups and select the members to fit a specific marketing concept (cute, innocent, sexy, girl crush, etc) and they commission the music from songwriting teams to match the group concept. The idols often have little creative input or control over their careers as far as I can tell. Kim Dohoon formed Mamamoo with the novel idea (for kpop) of selecting members for their vocal talent, creativity and performance skills and marketing them as artists, therefore they've had more creative input from the start and more flexibility to pursue their own diverse tastes and experiment with new musical directions than most groups. But even compared to westerners who aren't under strict control how many artists have a discography that ranges from jazz, swing, r&b, soul, doo wop and rock to hip hop, latin pop, reggaeton, bossa nova, EDM, ballads, country, folk and more? Very few have the versatility and the chops to pull off such a variety of styles successfully and, as kpop pops put it, with authenticity, but good luck finding a bad Mamamoo song among the 400 or so in their discography. 😂
Sorry to blab on. Take care!

Mamamoo's Wheein is currently in US for her 1st solo concert. Check it out if you can. Her solo music leans more on the R&B side & her live stage is amazing! You don't need to know her songs to enjoy it. It's simply good music that you can vibe to. It's also a chance to meet fellow MMM fans. Not to toot my own horn but we're a pretty cool bunch ;)
