“Drink water from the spring where horses drink. The horse will never drink bad water.
Lay your bed where the cat sleeps.
Eat the fruit that has been touched by a worm.
Boldly pick the mushroom on which the insects sit.
Plant the tree where the mole digs.
Build your house where the snake sits to warm itself.
Dig your fountain where the birds hide from heat.
Go to sleep and wake up at the same time with the birds - you will reap all of the days golden grains.
Eat more green - you will have strong legs and a resistant heart, like the beings of the forest.
Swim often and you will feel on earth like the fish in the water.
Look at the sky as often as possible and your thoughts will become light and clear.
Be quiet a lot, speak little - and silence will come in your heart, and your spirit will be calm and full of peace.”
    Saint Seraphim of Sarov

When my husband and I were first married we had to go away over lunchtime, so I made my husband a sandwich for the road. I ran to the garden and grabbed some lettuce and quickly rinsed them off. I looked the leaves over quickly but not thoroughly. My husband was happily munching on his sandwich and suddenly stopped eating and pulled something out of his mouth. It was a slug. He said it didn't taste bad but he thought the ham was awfully gristley and chewy. I was mortified for about 3 seconds but then I thought it was hilarious. I still do. Good thing he has a good sense of humour and is forgiving.

I always recommend parents of young children plant potatoes. You can plant store bought, so it's nothing fancy, but I always thought harvesting them was like digging for treasure! My daughter used to love being asked to go dig potatoes for dinner. She got very good at plunging her hands into the garden and pulling out treasures. Then packing the dirt back for the next "dig".

      @tonyaciuba547 4 года назад

@@joannelambert2635 Here in the US the store bought eggs are pasteurized, so they have to be refrigerated afterwards. The eggs are usually white because most poultry farms use the white leghorn breed (good layers and don't require as much food as heavy breeds). White leghorns lay white eggs. Some use brown egglayers like sexlinks or Rhode Island Reds. Those are usually marketed as organic cage free even though the color of the eggs are dependent on the breed of chicken. Personally, I prefer to raise my own chickens and have a variety of colored eggs without the pasteurization and added chemicals.

I was pursuing a biology degree and we learned "organic" food is a myth as something can be sprayed/added to the food after the harvest and have it still be considered organic, and its mainly advertised as such for the price tag. Another note about slugs - don't let dogs eat them and don't let them have veggies that could have them on it. Last year my dog Ronan got a condition called lungworm, where a parasite enters the body and can cause some serious issues reminiscent of pneumonia. It was terrifying to watch him go through that and he had to be medicated for 2 months to rid his body of the parasite.
And yeah, I accidentally threw a little garden spider in our stir-fry yesterday because I failed to wash my spinach 😂 Lesson learned!

In 1973 I got my favorite cookbook as a wedding present. It is called The Cattle Country Cook Book, Basic Recipes from East of the Cascades by Nancy Strope. I am still using it! As far as I know it is still in print. God bless you and your family. I love your videos.

Aren't those old cookbooks great? I taught myself to cook using the Farm Journal's Country Cookbook (1959). It had all the basic things, and a section on cooking for fifty people, lol. Now I'm going to try to find the one you mentioned - sounds like it's right up my alley!

I don't know why, but it never dawned on me that I could eat onions straight out of the garden. I saw a complicated curing video years ago, and it scared me away from growing onions. I guess I need to revisit the idea.

I'd even soak farmers market vegetables( supposedly clean) before I has a garden really intensively. My granmother only really ever used salt water, maybe a drop of dish soap if the produce was really dirty.I will never forgret having a couple of mt tiny Sunday school babies (age 3 and 4 atthe time think thy had done a magic trick when I had them pull carrots out of the church's garden bed!Wish I had filmed that!😊Lovely recipe. Nothing like growing and preparing your own food. Thank you for taking about REAL food and it’s blemishes. I work at a farm gate that deals mainly in oversized and undersized and unwanted produce because it’s not deemed perfect enough for market sale. The amount of good food thrown away because of its look is just so heartbreaking. Your message will reach many, thank you 🙌🏼 xx Cathi xx

Jess for slugs & snails put a container or saucer of beer out in your garden ( where ever they are) I have done this for years & have never had a problem here in sub-tropical Brisbane Australia, Jess I totally agree when it comes to supermarket perfect food- Thank Goodness we are lucky enough to grow & eat our own produce that is not sprayed or treated with terrible things, Unfortunately I cannot grow cauliflower so I do have to buy from my organic store. Loved this video. Cheers Denise - Australia- YOU ARE THE REASON I GROW FOOD because of your motivation. !!!!!!!!

Prestine looking store bought produce makes me take pause, too. However, so do bugs on my homegrown food. It speaks volumes to me about what may be happening in my garden. I use soil regeneration/biological practices for high nutrition/plant health. The high levels of sugars in healthy plants actually repel insects. I haven't had an infestation or crop wiped out for years. My garden is 100% pesticide-free + no synthetics anything 😁 It is possible to grow great food without all the bugs. Does my garden have bugs? Yes. Beneficials need to eat, too lol. Do bugs infest my crops? No. I happily eat and share my pristine garden food 🥰 It is very possible.

Love it! Dec. 28th is my daughter's b- day. Her name is "Isis". People tend to get nervous saying her name. Except for the bellydance community. They absolutely love her name. I look forward to seeing the new kitchen. Too bad you didn't over winter your peppers. I did, and they are producing like crazy right now. Pepper plants can last as long as 2 years before dying. They turn massive like tomato plants can be. Thank you for sharing.

Good morning from Maryland! Jess and Miah: you are both such an inspiration to me. What a blessing you are to me. You remind me so very much of myself when I was young and raising our 5 children. I grew everything that we ate, made all our clothing, rugs, curtains, blankets, etc. For me it was just what we did! There was no homesteading movement. Lol Hubby and I are both pastors and teachers. There nothing better than tending to God’s garden and His children. Such a blessing for the two of you to share with your children! We recently bought a log cabin and several acres of good Maryland ground. Devotions are finished, My large garden is growing abundantly and my chickens are laying profusely. I’m currently knitting hubby a blanket, relaxing while watching my favorite RUclips channel: Roots and Refuge. Ever hear of them. 😆 May God’s blessings continue to shine on your family, friends, neighbors and fans!
