Allotment in a Box, ep 1: Brassicas🥬Kathy shows us how to get the most from your brassica plants. All brassicas want is three things: 1. Lots of space. 2. Very firm soil and 3. Plenty of time in the ground! The exception to that rule is Kohl Rabi, which grows quickly and can be planted closer together🌱🌱
Some brassicas give you a nice long harvest, such as kale, where you can pick the outer leaves whenever you want them. With other brassicas like cabbage, you wait to harvest the whole plant. You’ll get a real sense of triumph when you do!🤩
Kathy’s best tip to grow brassicas is to really tread down on the soil to firm it, especially if you are growing in a raised bed. Controversial!😅It may seem like you’re breaking all the rules of old fashioned veg growing, but it’s the secret of Kathy’s kale success!🏆
What brassicas like kale really hate is wind rock💨 Kathy recommends putting a stake in early, so you can tie the plant to it as it grows. Brassicas can get really quite tall, so it’s important to have a good support in place.
