- Lyric
A desert road from vegas to nowhere
Someplace better than where you`ve been
A coffe machine that needs some fixin`
In a little cafe just around the bend
Chorus:
I am calling you
Can`t you hear me?
I am calling you
A hot dry wind blows right through me
The baby`s crying so i can`t sleep
But we both know the change is coming
Come in closer, sweet release
I am calling you
Can't you hear me?
I am calling you
A desert road from vegas to nowhere
Someplace better than where you`ve been
A coffe machine that needs some fixin`
In a little cafe just around the bend
A hot dry wind blows right through me
The baby`s crying so i can`t sleep
Amd i can feel the change is coming
Come in closer, sweet release
I wanted to play this song for my mother when she died after 8 years of Alzheimer's disease because when I was young we watched Bagdad Cafe many times together and we used to listen to this soundtrack frequently, on cassette, in the car when we used to often drive in the countryside of rural New South Wales, Australia together. It was a very bonding era for us after leaving our life and dear family friends and my older sisters in the big city of Brisbane, 12 hours drive away.
But when my mother died her partner hijacked her death and funeral and I wasn't welcome to contribute to her funeral as I wanted to, so I didn't end up being able to play this song, (or any other) for her funeral.
That was in 2018, and all these years later when I occasionally play this song it still cuts deep but also soothes me and reminds me of a time in my life when my mother and I were extremely close.
Amazing song and singer. Nobody can sing this like Jevetta.
Much love to you all who hold this song dear, and the movie as well.

One of my all time favorites.
Wow.. Beautiful.. thank you.. and Thank you for sharing. What a beautiful story.. I'm sorry about the funeral.. but you still have this 😊🙏😊🫶 yes.. thank you.. song & movie special to me ♥️♥️☮️
I feel the same way about this song. My Mother Christine and I watched this film so many times and it means so much to me. My Mum died suddenly 8 years ago and this song makes me feel so close to her.
I miss her so much.
Sending love to you. Xxxx
Mercy. My mom and I watch this beloved quirky movie when we need comfort. This song is an anthem. My mom is 90, I have the privilege of being her companion. Your heartfelt bittersweet stories have made this sing, movie, and time with my mom, who is the love of my life, even sweeter than before🙏💜🙏
A beautiful love song for your dear mother who’s funeral you were not able to attend. My heart goes out to you and I so agree about Jevetta’s rendition of this haunting song much love to you.
No one else will ever sing this song the way Jevetta Steele did.

Nous sommes en 2024 , cette chanson et ce film sont gravés dans ma mémoire pour toujours 💖
I bought the DVD several years ago.. I love the movie and this song in particular.
Feeling all alone in a world of mindless zombies and then this song comes on and suddenly there’s an element of sense to it all. Thank you beautiful song, for reaching a broken and torn heart.
Beautifully said
@@carllundin1603 - beautifully sad.
Le ferite si rimarginano e la vita continua in qualche modo🍀🌻🙏🌻🤗
Just right.

Her voice says more than I ever could...
Phenonamel movie damn near a masterpiece.
Went to see this little gem of a movie called Bagdad Cafe in the late 80’s and fell in love with it’s wonderful, quirky characters. I’ll never forget that as we were leaving the theater everyone, and I mean everyone, was softly singing “I………am calling you”. It was magical
😊😊love that
Her voice is unforgettable and haunting. It leaves an impression unlike any other.
Haunting. Perfect description ❤️
Jeff Buckley, listen 🎶
So much so. When you listen to this, you feel it deep down and your soul.
I saw the movie when it came out in the late 80’s and this song has haunted me ever since. Breathtakingly perfect! I’ve listened to it often ever since I first heard it!
I was just thinking how I would've loved to have seen this in a theater and really get into it as opposed to watching it here and there on streaming. Didn't do it justice
Same. For some reason for the first time in years this popped into my head. And I pulled it up to listen again. It's still as hits me as hard and sweetly as it did long ago. It touches something deep down in my soul. 😌💞
im with you on that. this song has been in my head for over 30 yrs now. It is probably the most beautifull song i have ever heard
I still have this movie in DVD😂
Yes! Ditto.. I've always pictured how it would be & look like on the big screen ~ getting to see it at the theater
This song is like a cry of the soul, it was used perfectly in the film Bagdad Cafe.
I agree. Perfect opening that set the mood and then the film just took off from there.
Oh, yes!
Completely agree! I loved the tv series too.
Yes
TV series?
The first time I heard "I am calling you" was on an AT&T commercial. Couldn't get it out of my mind and called AT&T and got Jevetta Steele's name. Then I found the song. Then I found the movie. This was back in the early 1990's. I've been in love with all of them since.
The exact same recollection. Like from 1992.
In Italy we had a Volvo commercial with it, in 1990. The song has been in my mind ever since.
But I also hate that they used such a beautiful special song to me, for a commercial though! You know? What I mean? Much 🫶 tho
Look, people fucking love this song. We've loved it for years, and years. Don't come in here talking about how some wippersnapper from the voice sang it better. Have some God Damn respect - it's Javetta Steele
No one will ever sing it better …. Eff off don’t even try
Her voice makes me cry😩
She does the best wail of any singer. Ever. I have listened to this song dozens and dozens of times. Most powerful, poignant, evocative movie song out there.
😊🙏🫶 love that
There is nothing better than the original version. Thank you jevetta steele!

I was gonna post the same. I only wish there were captions to the video.
Amen to that sis jevetta voice is so powerful it gives you emotion for this movie💃💃😍
Jeff Buckley's version is great, too.
I've been looking everywhere to download it, buy it, whatever and cannot find it in digital format. Amazon offers vinyl, CD, and cassette! What year are we in?
I've also checked out a bunch of covers, but really, no matter how good the cover is it's just sacrilege in comparison.
No covers needed. Will never be Jevetta.
The longing in her voice is real. My current mood.
2020 still one of the most beautiful songs
2023 and yes still one of the most beautiful songs.
💯%
Just watched Bagdad Cafe & hadn't seen it in years! I'd forgotten how good this movie is and the awesome cast that it has. And of course when Jevetta Steele started singing it brought those chills back when I first saw this movie waaaaay back when.🤗 Classic hall of Fame movie for sure!💯👍🏿
Just picture it: 1988 a little gem of a movie comes out and changes the world and is nominated for Best Original Song!
THE MOVIE AND THE SONG, JUST AMAZING.........
I'm so grateful to AHS: NYC for introducing me to this beautiful song. I cry every time I listen to this version, but I can't stop listening.`
Me too!
I just started AHS- NYC tonight.
Pati Lupone was great but I just had to look for the OG!
The song just oozes the feeling of deep, lost longing.
It touched my heart. 🥲😅
No.. can't stop listening
Deep.. lost longing .. yes ....
The perfect song with the perfect voice for one of the best and one of my favorite movies of all time!
have listened to this a million times and still get goosebump...and my buddy, CCH, made her debut in this film
Wasn’t she the nurse in All That Jazz?
Became a CCH Pounder fan after watching this movie... Many years ago.
She was phenomenal in this film and I have followed her career since. I lost every role I auditioned for to her! 😂 She definitely deserves all the success!
Wait whaaat??! How exciting tell me more! 😄 and sounds like you know some pretty cool, well-to-do people also!! 😃😃
Wait what?? You auditioned with her? .. I was into acting my whole life 🫶
I miss the 90's soooo much. 😟
Her voice stirs up emotions I don't know how to explain, especially the part "I'm calling you" so piercing. Watch the movie, couldn't get it out of my head either.
Jj Smith absolutely a s well said Couldn’t put it I to words thank you
I just heard this for the first time in SongPop game. I had to go back and see what song it was, because I was instantly magnetized to it. ♥️🎼🎶
Same here - saw the movie almost 25 years ago and it left an unforgettable mark inside me. Hard to explain. And the song is so magical and emotional I can't even listen to it. It somehow breaks my soul. Not in a bad way. But so much emotion, it's hard to handle. Maybe one day again.
I LOVE THE MOVIE, I LOVE YOUR VOICE GIVES ME PEACE, TRANQUILITY. IT'S AS IF IT TRANSPORTS YOU TO ANOTHER PLACE
this is underrated
Many others have done justice to this song but Jevetta's version is the BEST. It has an easy, natural, uncomplicated and cleaner sound than the others'. Thank goodness they used this one for the soundtrack of that wonderful movie.
easy, natural, uncomplicated... quite right.
I agree. My fav of all time.
I remember having watched it totally at random on VHS a long time ago ; just because I liked the movie cover...I was amazed by it, and still am
Can't describe that voice, just impossible.
The Angels are calling and I’m listening. Love this song and the movie. Both are classics!
The singing opens up worlds for me. There’s a musical universe out there and this is the kind of stuff that brings it about.
Ooohh that's nice
This voice is killing me... Goes deeply into my heart 😍🙌
Me too 😍
I heard this song from the movie Bagdad cafe and ever since than the movie and the song have been one of my favourites! Theres just something about the movie as well as the song, they are just so beautiful. I find Javetta Steele's voice in this song to be very hauntingly beautiful.:-)
The movie was great because it wasn't pretentious, didn't have any political messages trying to be shoved down your throat, it was just a well told story by a cast that could actually act, accompanied by some amazing music. Man I loved that movie, and this song. Jevetta Steeles version is still the absolute best version hands down.
Her voice is so beautiful and moving that I don't understand why we didn't hear more from her on the radio in concert and everywhere. Or maybe it's just me who missed her and wasn't paying attention. I hope she made a lot of money from this song in this movie.
@@zerogrey3798I've never heard any other version and I don't want to!
What a beautiful voice Jevetta Steele
Thank you to the gay intern who got this song on AHS:NYC so more generations can appreciate Javetta' work. I've been listening to her album on youtube for a few days now, i can't believe she isn't more popular and has more music out.
I'm sorry 😄 but what is AHS/NYC 🤭 .. and you've got me interested in checking out what you've been listening to by her!

+Rowena Mattox Me too. Every time.
This song sounds haunting for strange reason. I would heard it about 4 times over the years when the movie would come on...and it always gave me that feeling. It came on tonight (2/15/21) and the same feeling again.🤦🏾♀️
Esa voz desgarrada y el sentimiento con el que la artista interpreta,, llegan a lo más profundo del alma .
Oh m’y god 👌🏽 What a fragility that was found in that song A 💎 - piece diamond that song thank you so much For this wonderful song👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽❤️😌☺️
I don't know why. But this song make me cry. I love this song
This song sounds haunting to me. It is like someone calling me out from the other world to reach out to me and maybe even sits right into my seat of soul in my body ....definitely it possesses me.
Nobody manages to do a cover at its true value, even the greatest singer on the planet.
Jevetta Steele, you're the greatest

Jevetta Steele you are the best of all, the original, wow!!!!!!
I found this song from watching American horror story and it hit me instantly when I was watching it.. I had to find what song the lady was singing and here we are.. ms Steele, you have quite the voice❤.
Goose bumps. Amazing voice. Notes so clean
this song represents all the good things about the marriage of my mom and dad. I was still a baby, they were shaken by the unfulfilled promises of perestroika, but still very young, my dad worked as a front desk clerk at a hotel and I *think* he got that vcr by stealing it from work, somehow dug up a copy of Baghdad Cafe same way he dug up a lot of other leftfield euro flicks, they watched that movie A LOT, movies like this are the way to mom's heart. marriage fell apart because of dad's fear of responsibilities, mom took off for US and took me with her, dad passed away a bitter man from cancer, mom still looking for comfort in this country 16 years on. life goes on, song remains very important to me. damn, I feel dizzy from typing all this out.
Thanks for sharing. God bless you and your mother
🙏❤️🙏
Perfect movie for that blend of hope and melancholy ❤️
Che la vita ti sia lieve e dolce 🍀🌻🌅
I never heard such voice that literally pull out all my emotion out. You are my Goddess.

A great little Movie to visit on a rainy day!. What a Voice Jvetta Steele has!
wonderfull sound ...maybe 1987 ? I remember many scenes with Jasmin (magic)and Brenda (singer) and brenda son played piano with his baby.. the little bagda cafee on route 66,,, sorry ,i am crying
This voice/song makes me think of a time when I was deeply in love and realized I wasn't enough....it still stirs those memories...
😢
That is the perfect description for this song
Yes....exactly that!
I love this song sooooo much! I haven’t heard it in years then it was covered on American Horror Story. Gives me chills and all the feels!
The original version sung by Jevetta Steele is the best....
The song and movie have a quiet cool that makes you feel more than you want to.

Years after watching it (many times over)

Uma das mais lindas músicas que já ouvi ,M- A -V-I-L-H-O-S-A-👏👏👏
This song is so haunting. There’s so much pain in this song and it’s pulling at my soul. Wow! I would love to know what the writer was going through when this song was pouring out. It’s sad to think that “sweet release” could mean suicide.
What a powerful song.
Jevetta is such an amazing singer. But, if it wasn't for Baghdad Cafe and me being so moved by this song she sang that I looked it up,, I never would have known who she was. I came here tonight because I just saw a 1994 movie: "Corrina Corrina" on TV and, Jevetta was actually IN that movie singing. She did "Over the Rainbow" and a few other songs in the movie which showcased her amazing voice to me once again. Truly a gifted singer. I wish she was more well know because that gift would have been able to bless so many others so, thanks for putting this video up JessieMelodyWorld K.
P.S. Just did some research and, apparently there are many circles where Jevetta is well know like theatre circles and, she's worked with many artists like Prince, Mavis Staples among others,, released an album in 2006 so, I was glad to read that.
We don’t deserve to hear sounds like this. Magnificent
We ALL definitely deserve to hear this….but I do understand what you’re saying. I believe that we are MEANT to really hear it. Goes right to the soul.
THIS SONG!!! SO MANY GOOD MEMORIES.
Perfect sound , perfect movie .. Hello from Turkey.
This song is priceless, I've not heard it in Donkeys years until Patti Laplunne ? Sorry if I've spelled her name wrong ,sang it on Ryan Murphy's Season 11 on AHS , gotta hand it to them, evert season , The Choreography and musical direction is incredible .But I agree,no one performed this as beautiful as Jevetta S x

What a voice!!!
Here from AHS NYC
Perfeição 😍
I saw the movie now third time, i like cch Pounder , Jack Palance and last but not least, Marianne Sägebrecht, zum verlieben, so lovely; and than this wonderful song, a masterpiece. So magnifecent.
Her version always gives me goosebumps. So intense and beautiful...
I love this Song so much I listen this song everything day before to go to bed.
Song of heart, voice of love
My mom (86) died 12-26-19 and my wife (50) died 10-12-20. I saw the movie in college and was for ever haunted by this melody and pure vocal style. It still drives me to happy tears.
Please accept my condolences. I understand how you feel about this song.
My daughter on the Tucson High swimming team: championships in Phoenix, we rode in October at the break of dawn with this song on our journey.
I will keep you in my prayers.
I remember visiting Paris after the movie came out there and this song seemed to be playing everywhere. Day or night someone was blasting this song out of apartment windows, stores, cafés, you name it. It was everywhere. The French must have bought more copies of this record than any other nation on Earth. The Polish version version is beautiful and outstanding and very tear-jerking, but can in no way be said to surpass Jevetta's chock-full of African-American SOUL version. They are both crowing jewels in their own category. That's what 7P thinks. ⚙
