    Thanks Jim. I did my 2000 Explorer XLT 4x4 front left bearing last night after a late dinner. It was nice n cool working after sunset in the driveway. Started at 2030 and was done test-driving by 2300. My wife was flabbergasted. I told her I can accomplish anything if I've got Stevie Ray Vaughan as working music. and coffee. Coffee saves lives.

    If you did it, I didn't see it. My bearing came with a warning that it needed to be torqued to185 lbs. or the warranty was void. Anyway, 2 hours later, I'm still beating on my old bearing trying to get it off. Thanks for getting me this far.

    I went with loosening the front axle splindle nut with the tire on and on the ground. I had to remove the little center cap on the rim with the tire off , then put the tire back on. Another short cut was removing the brake caliber bracket with the caliber still attached (along with the rotor) I set it on top of a upside down 5 gal bucket.
    The 32 MM axle spindle nut was the hardest part for me. I haven't put it all back together yet, waiting for it to cool down to under 90 outside.

      Just did this job. Can confirm, axle nut was a pain in the ass. I put a pipe on my breaker bar to get even more leverage and the pipe was just bending sideways. Ended up borrowing my neighbors impact to get it off.

    Hey Jim...Recently, I bought a 2003 Explorer V8 and it is good. My mechanic checked all four and nothing is the least bit lose or tight. His conclusion is that the bearings are good and the noise I am hearing is ambient. We went for a test drive together and I demonstrated that the noise appears to be coming from the right front. It is especially noticeable because it is most audible when smooth turning to the right at 60 Kms in the city 60 and 110 to 120 on the highway as those are our speed limits. The sound goes away when I straighten out or turn to the left at speed. I am slightly hearing impaired but the humming from what sounds like metal on metal with very little lubrication drives me crazy. I am not into turning up the radio and in fact, silence is golden when I am driving. It is not a grinding sound but more a humming with a slight vibration sound. I want to replace both front bearing assemblies and my mechanic said it could be something else. CV joints maybe? The boots look good. What do you think? Any suggestions.

    Nearly freaked out when I took my hub cap off and couldn't see the axle nut or an axle. Then remembered it's a RWD.
    Man it was an easy job without that axle in the way of everything. Also wasn't much of a fight to get the old bearing out of the steering knuckle.

      Do you have anything on the rear end? I have a 2004 Explorer Eddie Bauer with a clunk in the rear. I had the left rear up and I could spin the tire like 40° before the gear engaged. Pretty sure that's not supposed to happen.

    🤔 Guys always watch multiple videos and always try and do the work yourselves cause all mechanic work should be done with torc specs that’s exactly why things dont last as long as they should.hand tightening and air hammers is the lazy way 😳 of doing things and that’s why I never take my car to a ( mechanic ) 🤦🏽‍♂️.

  • @thebipper75
    @thebipper75 4 года назад

    Well I'll have to say I've been a mechanic for many years and I never use Impact Guns to put in axle bolts! do it by hand then use a torque bar to get the proper specs using Impact Guns to put in axle bolts are going to most certainly Destroy your bearing prematurely
