    For the gradient layer, why not use a rectangle? You can still set to softlight and adjust blend ranges, but you can also save as an asset for fully adjustable reuse.

      That is a very good suggestion. It a matter of preference i guess. I prefer to use a fill layers as it is independent on canvas size. Also in the layers panel it makes more sense to use a fill layer for these kind of operations (at least for me, whereas a rectangle is better to use as a design element or to draw a rectangle ;) ).
