Yeah upwork actually introduced a currency called connects which freelancers are to pay for applying to jobs , making bids, boosting profiles etc
They introduced it as a way for them to reduce competition on the app and obviously to increase how much they make from people using their platform.
I strongly advise you only apply for jobs you’re capable of delivering 100% and can also show the client you can so you have a high chance of getting the job and therefore not wasting your connects
