You said it. Paris is a City, a major big City. It is more than sights, food, wine and what is shown on tv and in movies. It is a city with social, political and race issues. It is a city of haves and have nots. As with any place in this world, do your research beforehand, know that “near an area” tells you you are not “in” that area, and stay aware. Google the area and get the visual of it and articles on it. As a Black woman from New York City, I have traveled to several cities(Barcelona, Rome, Amsterdam, Munich, London, Zurich, Paris, Köln, Venice,…). I know where to stay and where to go in my day to be safe and maximize my travel joy at all times. Great video on a topic not covered as much as it should be. Your channel is a gold standard in all these Paris vlogs.

Tokyo is a major big city much larger than Paris and has no tourist no-go zones.
I visited Paris in 2017. I agree about avoiding the area north of Gare du Nord, I walked up that way and immediately turned back, you can just sense the change, nothing touristy and it felt run down. I generally agree with your list to be honest, it kind of matches with my experience of Paris.

Very well explained. People need to understand that Paris isn't all rainbows and unicorns and that there are real problems in certain areas so if they want to have a good vacation they should know before they go

This is a good video for people heading to Paris. In 2022 I spent a week in Paris, originally I'd booked a hotel near Gare du Nord but after reading some reviews from people many said it was a nice hotel but the area is not safe so I changed to a hotel in Montparnasse. After watching your video I can see I made the right choice, especially when I remember getting the metro to Sacré-Cœur de Montmartre and seeing what those surrounding neighbourhoods were like.
There are indeed good hotels around Gare du Nord (Hor, Mademoiselle...) If you are ready and aware of the potential issues there...

@@samurai_mr88 No, that will be fine. A fex sex-shops around but it's not a problematic part of Paris, except if you go pass the Barbes station.

Myself and my wife are staying in Paris Staycity Aparthotel La Defense at the end of the summer, as it seemed the cleanest and cheapest in our budget. Is La Defense okay? I'm aware it's a business district but we don't care so long as it's safeish! And we were looking at one last night in "Hotel Mirielle" due to our train being unchangeable last minute. I noticed it is almost directly outside of the area you mentioned not to stay in? Perhaps best to avoid? Many thanks!!
From your hotel to metro line 1, station Esplanade de la Défense, it's a good quarter of an hour of walk, but Courbevoie, the city it's in, is quite secure, and offers interesting cafés and restaurants.

This is a very good video. I have been staying in Montmartre just at the bottom of Sacre Coeur near Rue Ramey and Rue Clignancourt and it is wonderful and feels very safe you wonder some streets over towards Barbes and Magenta the vibe changes dramatically. I will be renting a room a little north of where I am now and it is pretty borderline. I will avoid some areas and probably take uber home if out late. Thank you for the information.

@@janebaker966 Maybe I was overprotective but having just had my phone stolen (and recovered thanks to FindMy) in the US I pretty much kept my hand on my iPhone the entire time I was out and about. Sure someone could still have stolen it but it would have taken some effort.

During our trip to Paris, we stayed near Église de Pantin, and overall, it felt relatively safe. However, we learned that the farther away from the city we ventured, the less secure it seemed. There was one incident on the Metro Line 5, where we encountered a drugged person who started biting into the plaster on his arm and spitting it at passengers. That was quite unsettling.
Another time, while heading to a Lidl store, we found ourselves in the 19th arrondissement of Paris around 8:30 pm. Upon exiting the Place des Fêtes metro station, we were greeted by a dark-skinned man grilling chestnuts on a lid from a trash bin, which he used as a makeshift cart. As people coming from a background of a former Eastern Bloc country, we were taken aback by the sight, finding it worse than some of the experiences we had in countries of the former Soviet Union. Seeing their reaction, we couldn't help but wonder who was more afraid - were they afraid of us, or were we afraid of them?
It's not always dangerous, but sometimes, you can get into uncomfortable situations.
It seems that some people in these neighborhoods do not have enough social inhibitors or just respect to others...

Line 5 is awful, it's crack addicts line. I have to take it everyday, you see horrible things. to be avoided, but you can't if you have to go the train stations.

Je n'ai que très rarement dormi à Roissy, mais je vous conseillerai de choisir l'un des hôtels qui entourent la gare RER Charles de Gaulle 1: par ordre de prix croissant, Ibis, Ibis Styles, Novotel, Citizen M et Hilton. Ce sont les plus pratiques et les plus proches de tout à Roissy à travers le RER B ou le CDG val.

It's very nice on the south of the railway lines, OK on the north of these lines, at the exception of boulevard Bessières up to Porte de Saint Ouen, where you will find a lot of prostitutes at night.

Thanks for the video, very important and useful. Although I will be staying in Montparnasse in a few weeks, we have booked a Dali event in Parc de la Villete at 8 pm. Is it safe to reach Porte de Patin Station, and from there go to the exhibition and Back? thank you so much for your advice.
Staying in Montparnasse is fine. The Dali event will also be OK, as long as you don't hang out in the neighborhood in the middle of the night.
This specific part of the 19th has a lot of traffic in the day (nice interesting museum) and evening (concert venue). The only thing is not to stay there after concert hours

There are a lot of restaurants in Belleville so you will have people out until at least midnight. You shouldn't have any issue with finding a taxi, or even better, call a Uber.

Ah yes now I understand that my first night in paris it was there by the canal in north east. My motorcycle saddle got cut there with a knife.. While parked outside. Just came back from Paris but I dont think the nice parts are payable for me too expensive. Nice video.

Honestly, it's not the worst place to stay. The closer you are to the park, the better it is, but if you get closer to Stalingrad, more to the west, then, it's not the best, at night.,
In september I stayed at a B&B to the east of Parc des Buttes-Chaumont near Danube metro station. I didn’t feel unsafe at all.
After staying with my young family at an Airbnb for 10 days across the park, i would stay there again. It's a beautiful park, safe neighborhood, not crowded, and easy to get to all the popular tourist sites via the Metro

On previous trips, I stayed in affordable hotels approximately three kilometers away from the historical center. Two years ago I stayed in a hotel in Place d'Italie and everything was fine. I found an affordable hotel in Rue de Menilmontant, where I will stay in Paris for four days next September, but I think it is in the 20th arrondissement and after watching your video, I started to worry that this place might be dangerous. Is this street safe? I mostly prefer walking to get around. Is it dangerous to walk between Ile de la Cite and this location, especially at night?

Boulogne is not in Paris, but the city bordering the south-western part of the city.
It is as safe as it can be, and it's the terminus point of two metro lines, so very convenient.

Personally, I'd choose Puteaux (I lived there once😁), but Créteil is nice too. It may depend on how far the AirBnB is from the metro station.

Hi, we wanted to book a airbnb in aubervilliers. It is near Fort d'Aubervilliers metro station. Is it a good place to stay. Please suggest.
My second option is hotel in canal saint martin. If both are not good can you please suggest an area where we can get realtively cheap accomodation. We wanted to stay only for 3 nights
I would not recommend Aubervilliers.

Both would be OK hotels, the Libertel in a more dodgy area with quite a few drug addicts around.
Or better suggest me an area relatively safe but with little cheaper option than central part.
Check the 15th arrondissement or even Issy les Moulineaux, along the metro line.

Honestly, I don't have enough knowledge to answer. They are both quite far from Paris. My gut feeling would be that Carrières is safer but I may be wrong...

Popincourt is a nice popular neighborhood.
In Pigalle it would be Ok until midnight... Just stay alert in the metro, or take a Uber

Yes, it's fine. Quite a popular neighborhood, with the very nice Coulée Verte nearby. A little on the east side, so expect longer transport times, but definitely fine.

Some people come for the museums, some for the night life, but if your thing is shopping, eating and people watching, then go to le Marais, and find a hotel not too far from Place des Vosges😁

The 16th is quite secure, though, as anywhere else in Paris, you have to be aware of pickpockets, especially at Trocadéro.
The Melia, right between Place de l'Etoile and place Victor Hugo, is in a beautiful avenue.

Hôtel Duquesne Eiffel or the Hôtel Le Littré
First, both are good hotels. Then it really depends on what neighborhood you are interested to stay in.
Duquesne is between the Invalides and the Eiffel Tower with some rooms with a a view of the Tower. Nice neighborhood but not so many transport options nor restaurants around.
Le Littré is in Montparnasse, a very lively neighborhood with a lot of transport options and a lot of restaurants. Then, even if secure, this part of Paris, because of the large train station will have more "strange" people...
I personally would go for the Duquesne.
Totally agree w/ u I was so harassed when I used to reside in Paris I had to take the metro everyday to go to my castings n in many neighborhoods I got harassed.

I'm sorry , my wife had to gro though that her entire youth , she told me it destroyed her life back then , she was always scared, she coudl'nt come and go , no matter what she tried not to attract attention. She was deprived of her freedom , now people talk about it , but back then it was a taboo and she thought she was alone, that it was her fault. NOw they ignore her, they prey on young women.

Bagnolet is clearly not the safest place to stay at. Make sure to find a hotel very close to the metro stations and be aware if you get back late at night.

We intend to stay 3 days in Paris at Mercure Gare de Iest or Okko, are they safe, especcially at evening around 8~9pm
The Okko is a better hotel, they offer many small amenities, but to me the Mercure is in a little bit safer neighborhood. Both are good choice, though!

That's a hotel with a good reputation right over the Porte d'Orléans Metro station on line 4. And even if it's on the boundaries of Paris, this neighborhood is quite nice! Might be a little noisy, though!

I travelled to Paris solo without any issues. We just need to know where to stay. I stayed in hotels in 8th, 17th and 5th. All went well, except for a road fight which I witnessed at St Germain de Pres. Well, its a city so I walked passed it. 8th and 17th are good. Its expensive. Worth trying For solo travellers.

I have booked a stay in Hotel Rosalie (Place d’Italie 5th arr.) and I’m looking into AirBnbs in Montmartre and Villejuif but they’re both in proximity to the blue/purple areas so I’m not too sure if it’s safe for solo female travellers.

I wish I had seen this video before I visited Paris. Without knowing, I selected accommodation in Gare du Nord and had a rather negative impression of the city. Perhaps I would have enjoyed it more if I had stayed somewhere safer!

The problem is ofc that you are going to pay for staying in a better(more touristic) area. This sucks for low budget tourists in their early 20's, but it is the way it is.
I once stayed in a pretty shady area in a F1 hotel. The hood was a bit dirty and the demographics where very diverse. Even so I didn't have negative experiences. But that's because I am a guy and while not from an immigrant background, I do have dark hair and some slightly dark features. So I just walked undisturbed to the metro and onwards to the center and back again after spending some time there. As a guy you simply have that extra leeway that girls just don't have I guess.
If visiting a city is like trying to avoid landmines then a negative impression is an accurate impression. It is very sad what has happened to paris and what is happening to europe

@@theguy9067 What's sad is we see the deterioration. 30 years living in Paris, I can say it strongly and quickly worsened over the past 5 years. I am starting to not recognize my city. Pretty sure the Swedes are feeling the same. I live and grew up in a very 'village like' small neighborhood, very cute and safe (like parents always letting us kids hang out unsupervised kind of safe), yet we are starting to see migrants on drugs, very agitated, drunk and wandering around. I was followed and threatened by 2 separate groups of men over 200 meters last week when coming home (one suggesting he would r$pe me). It was not the case two years ago. So far no agression but I'm afraid it will happen eventually.

It's very near to a Priority Zone (Porte de Montreuil - Python Duvernois - Fougères), but then it is in a neighborhood of Paris called Menilmontand that is known to be lively, dynamic and pleasant.
You'll be just near a part of Paris called "Campagne à Paris" (Campaign à Paris) which is quite nice to visit.

In fact, Latin American while a student I lived in Paris 30 years ago and the area wasn't safe but it's worsened, I guess. I think average people do not mind if it is full of AFrican sights provided people are clean, well-behaved and respectful. The problem is that it is rarely so.

Just stay alert, use a money belt or some other type of hidden money storage and be aware of your surroundings. In 15 trips to Europe I've been pickpocketed only once and noticed immediately and got my item (sunglasses) back from the thief (you can't go anywhere when the metro is moving).

I booked a room at an Airbnb in Coeur de Ville, district Courbevoie. Does not appear to be in or close to any blue or purple marks on the Paris city map.
Courbevoie is not a bad place to stay at in the western suburbs of Paris

Unfortunately, Pantin is part of these cities of the east of Paris with a somewhat high level of criminality. But the hotel is just above Hoche station on line 5, well situated...

Don't take a hotel with less than a 4 star user rating on google maps it's not worth it and just don't stay in the 93 department at all, the whole department is a dump. Campanile is really not a good low cost hotel chain. It's bottom of the barrel. wherever you choose, just make sure there are no service interruptions due to works on the line (google "ratp network modernisation" for the full official list in English of upcoming works on the Paris public transportation network .)
I took my mom to Paris in 2015. The first thing she saw in Paris leaving the Orly airport bus was Gare Du Nord station. It is a huge station and I swear we were the only Europeans in the whole station if you don't count Romanian gipsies. As a Slovakian, she'd never seen anything like it before and certainly didn't expect to see something like that in the French capital.
Gare du Nord is a place to go through, not to stay...

Yes, absolutely. These surroundings are only an issue for solo females. There is a very nice north African restaurant in this street: le delly's

Hi ! Last year when i visited paris i stayed in Holiday Inn hotel which is opposite Gare de l Est train station. Towards the left side of the hotel the area had lots of black ppl screaming and shouting on the road. Is it a safe place for tourist ?
All this neigborhood, from Metro Strasbourg Saint-Denis to Gare du Nord, is indeed not the most pleasant to stay in when you are in Paris.

It's not nice to say but it is what it is. When the place is predominantly crowded with North-Africans and Africans the security levels tend to decrease for a various set of reasons. As a tourist it is maybe better to avoid these areas if there is nothing you must do absolutely there. Also note that if Roissy Airport zone itself is totally safe, the cities around are very dangerous for strangers. Don't get to the airport by walking by yourself through these areas.
Yes, in between Paris and CDG airport, the Seine-Saint-Denis department is not the safest...

Living in the 20th near Ménilmontant, I don't understand your comments about Belleville. The street is long and if there are any problems, they would have to be in the very east of it, but I haven't seen any there. Nor have I seen problems at Place des Fêtes and I have been there at night. Bd de la Villette does have prostitution, but it is very low-key with some lovely well-dressed Asian women, but only a very few at a time. At first I didn't even realize what was up.
Nor have I seen problems in the parts of the 10-11th shown. There are some popular nightspots in the area. The area around Station Ménilmontant is a bit seedy, but I wouldn't say dangerous.
To the south, it is probably best to avoid the area around the HLMs at Porte de Vanves. I once lived in the 13th very near the east zone shown. It must be outside of Bvd Massena(my resolution isn't very good). Just outside of Paris to the north, avoid Aubervillers along the Metro, especially 4-Chemins.
The 20th isn't clearly as problematic as a lot of parts in the 19th or the eastern part of the 18th.
This said, when you're a tourist, place des fêtes isn't the best place to stay at.
It is certainly dangerous. I know lots of people who've had problems there. Different people have different thresholds for what they call dangerous (especially if you come from safer cities). And it's different based on your age, gender, race. Would not recommend this area to anyone.
I visited Paris once, the Pere Lachais cemetery was the real highlight of my trip, you must do this if you go, and it was free (unlike everything else) except for my 1 euro celebrity grave spotting map. You can thank me later.

I went to St Denis. I intended to see the memorials of the French Kings and Queens in the Cathedral there but i found the high street full of African shops so vibrant,fun and brilliant prices there that i stayed there. But i wouldbt want to be there at dusk and later and i can get why none of the popular youtubers film those places. Like asking to get beaten up. Ha ha. Like ...and heres yet another fantastic coffee shop where you can pay a ridiculous amount of money for a cup of coffee,then ill show you one just down the street.... " On one of my visits i stsyed at very nice hotel,well run and friendly right by the Gare de l'est. They had excellent security. Every night from about 8pm to 3am the night hours were filled with raucous noise and a lot of shouting and fighting. It was like being in a jungle,but then it was in reality.
I wouldnt recommend that area for a family with children,great transport links though.
Most of the places in this video are OK by day (not all of them, though), but at night it's a totally different story!

Thanks for this great video telling the truth! Personally, I avoid all French cities. There are mostly invaded by criminals and scammers. So many nice places to visit outside the cities!
There are no more thieves and scammers in Paris than in any other large European cities.
You have to always remain cautious though.
And when it comes to criminality, Paris, even as a huge metropol is much safer than any US cities, as guns are not allowed in France.

19th is not that bad, is probably the poorest arr. in Paris. Stalingrad can be risky and Porte de la Villete is very ugly sometimes because of drug addicts, but Belleville and Place des Fetes are pretty cool. I loved to hang out in Avenue de Flandre, near Canal Ourcq and in Buttes Chaumont.
I guess visitors for just a few days in Paris wouldn't have much to do there, except for the Cité des Sciences...

19th is not that bad - It's VERY bad. I know people all over the 19th who've been harassed, mugged, and nearly raped as well as stabbed. It's horrendous.

@@paristoptips just can't back from a full week in Paris. Stayed in the 19th at the Okko Rosa Parks. Did not feel unsafe at any moment, usually was arriving home between 00:00 - 2:00 (which is early to some) and never had any issues. Wonderful neighborhood, I think people aren't just used to dealing with bigger cities.

It's much more fun to explore the neighbourhoods of Paris than the big tourist attractions but these areas are considered dodgy for a reason so keep your wits about you and if you do get a camera out,don't start filming people. No one seemed to mind me photographing interesting shop fronts but I think would have objected if I'd started filming them going to + fro.
This is probably why Paris always looks so WHITE in you tube vlogs.

Despite today's issues I think Paris is far nicer and far safer than it was in the 1980s when I first visited. The people seem more friendly too, I got into a conversation with a couple of Amazon techies last summer and was invited to lunch!
I think that video is slightly exaggerated. I stayed close to Gare Du Nord, and never had problems even at night.
I've worked for 5 years for a company just 100 m from Gare du Nord: I can tell you that, especially if you are a woman, what I've said in the video is not exaggerated.
This said, the situation is better in the west of Gare du Nord than in the east!
And what is the common point between all these neighborhoods where it is not good to live or go?
Not so great housing, lot's of HLM (council houses), higher immigrant population than in the rest of the city ..
