  • In our latest “How Tweet It Is” segment on StarTalk, Neil deGrasse Tyson tells Bill Nye about his most retweeted tweet ever, tweeted on Christmas Day, 2014. Now you can watch Neil read his infamous tweet wishing Isaac Newton a happy birthday, for which he was accused of “trolling Christians on Christmas Day.” Neil and Bill talk about why there’s disagreement as to Newton’s birthday, along with the difficulties caused by England retaining the Julian calendar even after Pope Gregory XIII shaved a few days off the calendar in 1582.

    A perfectly valid and logical tweet constructed in such a way to poke at a segment of the population. Even if it was a troll (and I bet it was), it's easy enough to deny it.

    Hi everyone. I am I Christian and I also love science. I do believe their are some Christians in this world who aren't educated in such fields as science so they back up their religion in which I think is childish. Although myself, am not an expert in either subjects believe there is a truth in Christianity. Here is my answer to all the questions that religion "can't answer" well, what is the definition of a supreme ruler or God? Someone who is all knowing and I'm sure has an infinite amount of understanding unlike or selves or the human race. We don't even fully under stand or planet. So what makes us think we can understand a mind of a God? I ask that we all have an open mind :) thank you and have a blessed life. (No insults to non believers)

    Yes, because stating facts is trolling Christmas. That is ridiculous that people were upset with NdGT. Even if you are Christian, how does Newton's birth negate the birth of your own Christ? He didn't say anything negative or offensive. Get over it. Other people exist in the world, too and it in no way affects your religious beliefs. Just do what you do, and we will do what we do. This makes my mind explode. Neil, it was super cool you shared this fact, as I'm sure many people don't realize that is the case. It's cool to know about our history. This is especially true about people who made such an impact on our knowledge/understanding of the universe around us and the way we/stuff interacts with it.

    Christians need not be offended, if they are comfortable in their faith, then nothing else should matter, if you get defensive and upset then chances are you need to evaluate your own beliefs.

    • @rawstarmusic
      @rawstarmusic 9 лет назад

      Matthew075 I'm not a Christian but it's ok with them and jesus as long as they don't harm other people as in earlier times. This tweet wasn't offensive but it was normal, there was no special respect in it which probably is seen as the problem.

      ***** Unfortunately large parts of humanity has been ruled by psycho's through all of history. They reach the position using their well known skills. This applies not only to states but also to church. In religion there have been periods of severe brutality. Some religious scriptures are also clearly psychopathic where the writers show clear signs of insanity. Following those writing is not holy.

    • @rawstarmusic
      @rawstarmusic 8 лет назад

      ***** This thread is to old, I don't know if you refer to the comment by Matthew075 or Neil deGrasse? Ruling religions have claimed privileges in human history, often with the death penalty for not obeying them or for not being believer. Surely this is well known.

    • @Matthew075
      @Matthew075 8 лет назад

      ***** Never could explain why athiests spend so much effort trying to disprove God, writing books, debating... I mean if it's simply nonsense then why spend any time on it at all. It's not like people are debating the existence of elves and fairies ...
      Religious people need to just believe what they want and stop being so defensive.
      It's all so silly.

    • @rawstarmusic
      @rawstarmusic 8 лет назад

      ***** Atheism is not a religion. It's an opinion. No evidence is put forward, hence some people don't submit to doctrine without evidence. Since no religion throughout history has put forth any evidence for their doctrines, that leaves you without any god, atheism. In order to act in life: you want your doctor to do surgery or pray? you have to trust in your opinion that there seems to be no intervening god.
      If you trust in science and treatment for epidemic diseases, you are not religious. Everything you do not isn't a religion. Agnostics don't know so in that case there could be some surgery done or some exorcism instead? if the priest convinces you that it's a demon causing the illness.

    I need input, I have this idea I but lack the expertise to see if it actually works. The idea is simple that I came up with from hypothesis that net total energy of the universe is 0. The biggest question that comes from this hypothesis what gave the universe initial push to go bang. Since we are talking about 0 how come anything be created from nothing based on laws of mathematics. From primary schools we are taught that you can not divide by zero, we do it not because it would break some fundamental laws of physics or math but because our answer will be infinitely large, and current scientific mind set if equations end up in infinities they generally are wrong, at least that's what gathered from my knowledge. However we also know that if we divide any number by the same number we will get 1, so what prohibits us to divide 0 by 0 (infinitely small number by the same infinitely small number) and one definitive answer which will gives us 1. From my thought experiment I came up with the answer if there is a zero chance to create something from nothing yet if we give infinite amount of tries logic states that something is bound to happen and in this case it is 1. Think of it this way our entire universe is the product of immovable object meeting unstoppable force. Lets apply evolution principle to the universe lets say that laws particles and particle states existed in many forms yet only the most stable survived. Eventually the most stable form emerges given the infinite amount of tries. What I'm saying that there infinite many possibilities that can come out but their is only one answer. My idea our universe is all the universes and none of the universes at the same time resulting in one universe that exists in the moment. We know that the most basic particles exist in this wave matter form where we can never pinpoint where they are until we take a measurement as such the only way to predict the outcome is to use statistical probability as such if things get bigger particles begin to behave more predictable because we take cumulative particle effects that become laws. We do not know where individual particle will be but we can predict what the host of those particles will do.
