The one in Downey is technically the third one and was built before Ray Kroc's involvement in the company. It is the oldest McDonalds that is still in existence as the first two were destroyed years ago.

The owner of Juan Polo loves the Mother/Road Rte.66 so much he purchased the entire town of Amboy, CA for $125k. It's worth the drive to Amboy just to check out Roy's Cafe (The Hitcher filming location) and the vintage buildings.

Adam, you're re really bringing back great memories from my childhood and teen years with all the McD memorabilia. I had the Garfield mug that was shown in the display. They came out in the summer of 1987 right before I started my senior year of high school.

Born and raised in San Bernardino, seen that McDonald's plenty of times. Sadly, the city is a ghetto terrible torn up place. Also, my mom is buried at Mt. View cemetery same cemetery as Randy Rhoads former guitarist for Ozzy Osbourne. The wigwams are ghetto and horrible too lol you wouldn't want to stay there.
Sorry to be "that guy" but Randy was the guitarist for Ozzy's first two solo albums. Tony Iommi has always been the guitarist of Black Sabbath.

There is a chuck e cheese by the mall not too far from the museum, so the probably sold it to them and maybe because it was still functional they have it there than in the museum.

I stayed at the wigwam Inn when I was 11 years old.I remember being so scared of scorpions that I didn't sleep good. I also remember watching Seal's music video on MTV in the room "kissed by a rose on the grave"ooohhh memory's.

I went to SBHS right up the street from the first McDonald's and I always thought that was so random that it all started in this city. Used to be beautiful

@Weeaboos in a basement McDonald's never actually went out of business, the original founders Richard and Maurice (Mac) McDonald originally started with this as the first McDonald's location. Ray Kroc took his share of the company and used it as leverage and created the McDonald's Corporation and started franchising, in turn he opened a location across the street from this original location as competition to prove a point to the original founders of McDonald's that did not want Kroc to franchise and grow the business out of the notion that food quality would diminish and, in turn, put the original location out of business all the while the franchised McDonald's locations kept expanding.
Watch "the founder" on Netflix and you'll know the story

did you see "The Founder"? Because that is actually NOT the original McDonald's... The original McDonald's had no Arches.... what you see in your old photos is AFTER Ray Krock franchised the Mac Brothers... and built what you see with the Arches....

If you are interested in the history of McDonald's you should watch the movie " the founder". It covers the early history of the Dick and Mack mcdonald and how they started McDonald's in San Bernardino and, when ray kroc took over franchising and made McDonald's the global phenomenon it was before his death.

That was Ray Crocs first McDonald's. The very first McDonald's ever was in San Bernardino.

This was a franchise. He did not build that on his own. He did not buy the company for many years after this opened. This was the 9th McDonalds to open. Ray Kroc calling this the 1st McDonalds is just his way of erasing the McDonald brothers from history.

Nope. THIS is in fact the location of the very first McDonald's Hamburgers. Founders Richard and Maurice McDonald opened it in 1948 after they revamped their BBQ car hop restaurant on this site that they'd run since 1940 (when they moved the actual bldg from Monrovia, where it was a food stand, opened in 1937). We had a nice Cypriot family run 'Wimpy Grill' where i lived as a teenager, really great table service from very friendly personable staff, other franchises are available, but nothing but good memories from hanging out & meeting friends at our towns Wimpy!
