- Indians share a gene with Europeans that plays a significant role in coding for lighter skin, new research suggests.
The study, published Nov. 7 2013, in the journal PLOS Genetics, also revealed that the gene, which is responsible for 27 percent of skin color variation in Indians, was positively selected for in North, but not South Indian populations. When something is "selected for," that means it provides some advantage and so gets passed down to offspring, becoming more prevalent in a population over time.

The Indian subcontinent has an enormous variation in skin color.
"We have dark brown [tones], yellow tones and whitish-pinkish tones," said study lead author Chandana Basu Mallick, a biologist at the University of Tartu in Estonia. "We have quite a range and diversity in the biological spectrum of skin color."
But because South Asian gene studies are relatively rare, it wasn't clear which genes contributed to this variation. Past research has found at least 126 genes that code for pigmentation in general, Basu Mallick said.
Genetic mosaic
To find out, Basu Mallick and her colleagues took skin color measurements for about 1,228 individuals in Southern India. The researchers then conducted a genetic analysis and found that about 27 percent of the skin color variation was due to a variation in a skin pigmentation gene. Called SLC24A5, this gene codes for lighter skin and is present in almost 100 percent of Europeans.
The team also examined the gene in 95 people around the subcontinent and found that both South Asian and European populations inherited this particular variant from a common ancestor who lived sometime between 22,000 and 28,000 years ago.
"We don't know the origin of this mutation. We just know that they have a common ancestor," Basu Mallick told LiveScience, referring to both South Asians and Europeans.
The team then looked for the gene in more than 2,000 people from 54 ethnic groups around the subcontinent. Some groups, such as populations in Tibet and Burma, didn't have the gene variant at all, whereas the Northwestern tip of the subcontinent had a nearly 90 percent prevalence of the gene.
Lighter skin has less melanin, a pigment that blocks the sun's UV rays; the body uses these rays to make vitamin D. The SLC24A5 gene is linked to less melanin production, so the gene may have become more common in Europe because it allowed people's skin to make more vitamin D in the continent's low-light conditions.
But in India, the prevalence of the gene in different populations didn't correlate with latitude, but instead seemed strongly linked to language, geography and demographic history. The study also showed that the gene was positively selected for in North, but not South India (though both light- and dark-skinned people live in both regions).
It's not clear exactly what caused the gene to be favored in certain regions, but it probably wasn't the production of vitamin D alone, the study suggests.
"The demographic history of the population and their ancestry also contribute in this variation," Basu Mallick said.

@slayer u can say that but tbh quite alot of north indians have fair skin i wouldn't see them and call them brown. Technically their skin might be "brown" but most of them dont look brown especially considering barely any one uses suncreen here. My classmates looked pale spending 6 hrs in sun too indians r just very diverse.

Indians are beautiful!!! My son looks somewhat Indian, and my grandfather also looked somewhat Indian or middle Easterner with straight dark hair. I’m Dominican 🇩🇴 btw, I have family who look Indian/middle easterners, some look white and some look African with very small eyes (chinese type of eyes), and I have cousins who look Arab. Very strange the diverse looks in my family.

I'm from the north indian state of "Himachal Pradesh" i along with my college mates visited Poland in 2021. There was an obvious language barrier,my friends were buying some local artifacts when the shopkeeper started talking to me in polish thinking I'm polish and would translate it to them as i was with them as tour guide 😂.

I am an Indian guy from the south of Vindhyas. This is funny, but true… South Indians think I am North Indian. North Indians think I am middle eastern. A French guy thought I was Italian when I was visiting France. The Lebanese guys started talking to me in Arabic. In Mexico, they assume I know Spanish. And when I go for a haircut, a few ladies assume I am Puertorican. And, to my embarrassment and later in life to my amusement, the gays think I am gay (I think because of my neatly parted and well shaped medium thick eyebrows that I swear I have never groomed and smooth skin that looks moisturized when I am fully shaven). 23&Me says I am 0.4% South Indian and 99.6% some sub group only found west coast of in India. My y-haplogroup originated and evolved in India for the last 18000 years and my x-haplogroup originated and evolved in south India for the last 40000 years. I have more Neanderthal genes than 96% of the population ever tested which completely befuddled me. So, not sure how I would believe that all humans came from Africa only 10000 years ago.

I often get mistaken for a south american guy. My wife looks the stereotypical Indian inspite of being from north India, my grand mother could have easily passed as a white woman, my grandpa was dark skinned, my father has grayish green eyes with super light skin and my son is super light skinned with dark brown hair. There was not any special selection - there were multiple migration waves - since different groups of different skin color - and it was also preserved by the caste system.

Brother India is a country, there are mainly 3 races in India. Aryan, Dravidian and mongoloid. Aryans are lighter skin and tall. Dravidians come from Africa . Ok, here’s the thing. What I have learned is, we look different from eat Asians, because India falls near the equator. And countries near the equator have dark skin. For example, South Indian have dark skin because it is very near the equator, especially Tamilians. Then, as it goes to the north India, the skin color gets fair. Punjabis have the most fair skin because it’s at the top in north. I have brown skin, not too dark but not fair, I’m north indian. So it goes like that, hope it helped👍🫶 also, every skin tone is beautiful, I was just giving a bit of info lol
Well not all punjabis have fair skin. A good amount of them have brown skin. And in the sun we can also turn black like South Indians. I turn black in summer and light brown in winter time and I am punjabi
This is because all Indians share ancestry with South Indians/tribals

Not all Indians are the same. Northeast Indian peoples are different from those in the mainland. Most Northeastern people resemble Koreans and Japanese, often with fair skin. I'm also from the northeast and have fair skin. Additionally, Christianity is commonly followed among Northeastern peoples.
