  • A flowering tray of wonderful and rare Ariocarpus fissuratus, the Living Rock Cactus, in my greenhouse cactus & succulent plants collection. Enjoy with me this marvellous sight and awesome batch of Ariocarpus cacti which flowers every October.
    Origin & habitat: Mexico & Texas, USA. On dry limestone plains, gentle slopes and rocky limestone hills. This very slow growing cactus can take up to 50 years to reach it‘s fully mature size of ca. 15-20 cm (8 inches) in diameter. Often sold as grafted specimens, to speed up growth and minimise risk of root rot.
    Cultivation: not too difficult to grow, provided a suitable location is available.
    In summer: requires full sun exposure and a warm, dry location to grow and bloom.
    In winter: should be kept quite cool, at ca. 5-8 C (41 - 47 F) and completely dry, no watering!
    Soil/substrate: needs a very well-draining, mineral-rich cactus mix as very sensitive to root rot. Add 5-10% small limestone chippings/grit. No peat and max. 20% non-mineral components like clay loam.
    Very sensitive to overwatering! Always make sure the substrate/soil has completely dried off for a minimum of a week or two before watering again.
    Summer semi-dormancy! (in addition to normal Winter dormancy). Stop watering during July / August and start again in September, to trigger the wonderful blooms in October. (Note: timings apply to northern hemisphere growing).
    Enjoy!
    Joe

    Really nice Joe. Love the idea of planting them together. Fellow Ariocarpus lover here! Also grow mine from seeds. They flower in November for me here in new Delhi as it turns cooler much later here. Can't wait for mine to start blooming.

      @Ario Carpuss wow, fantastic to have you watching my video and also I am really very happy that you enjoyed it! Thanks so much for your wonderful feedback, from one Ariocarpus lover to another, haha, super!! So interesting for me to read about the November timing of yours in New Delhi, and that of course makes a lot of sense, as you explain, that it turns cooler much later there of course. What are the minimum winter temperatures that you get and how long do you have your cacti in their winter dormancy for? Once again thank you so much for commenting, I love being able to stay connected globally as cactus & succulent growers, sharing our experiences! Hope your Ariocarpus collection gives you wonderful blooms soon! Have a great weekend ahead, best regards, Joe

    I am amazed that you are able to provide different combinations of growth mixes, sun exposure, temperatures and dormancy/growth cycles in the same room. Especially when the sun is a constant. I am impressed.

      Hi Bill, thanks for your feedback and compliment, indeed not always that easy to realise, but there is also of course a lot of trial and error involved over the years. In my greenhouse, although relatively small in size, there are different "micro environments" which can be used to serve some of the different requirements. Thanks so much for watching and for your wonderful comments. Have a great day, best wishes and happy growing!!

    Gorgeous Ariocarpus and blooms, Joe. Always nice to have some autumn flowers. I’ve only got 3 Ariocarpus, none have bloomed yet though. Got quite a few seedlings of them but they’re super sloooow! Thank you for sharing these beauties with us my friend. Have a wonderful day from Edith & myself and happy growing as always 👍🏻🌵☀️🌺🌸🏜

      Hi Daz, yes indeed, these cacti require a fair amount of patience, as you say, they really take their time. When grafted they will grow faster, but I find that they then often tend to loose their original, characteristically gnarly and flat shapes - not everyone's cup of tea, haha. Thanks so much for watching and commenting, I'm very happy that you liked the video! Very best cactus greetings to Edith and yourself, have a great weekend both of you and happy growing of course!! 🌵🌵🌺🏵🌸👍😎

      Hi Cheryl, great to have you watching and commenting, thanks so much, really appreciated! Am very happy that you liked the blooms and also that I could introduce you to this wonderful genus of cacti. Yep indeed, I always find that it is often worth growing a batch of similar cacti together (...provided there is a bit of space available of course), as they usually grow that way in their natural habitats too - and as you say, when they all flower together, it is just a wonderful sight! Thanks, you have a great weekend too!!

    Absolutely beautiful!!! Lost the last of my ariocarpus last year. Cactus scale!! Bad thing about these beautiful plants is the beasties can hide deep in the wool of the tubrecals. Can't see them until it's too late!! I had a retusus that I had for 37 years!! It was the first to be attacked. I tried scrubbing out the scale but the plant was just too weak at that point. A large 6 inch wide plant. Really hurt on that one!! Then I noticed it on my 3 fissuratus. Too late . The beasties took them too!! I Really have to look close on the furry ones!!! Love seeing your beauties!!! Thanks for sharing Joe!!! From Morris Park in the Ozarks, have a wonderful day!!! Peace, Love, Plants!!!✌️💖🌵🌺🌳🥀🌿🏵🌱🌹🌲🌸🌴🌷🪴🌻🌾🌼😃👍

      Hi Clyde, very sorry to hear that, it sounds awful, especially losing such a prized 37 year old plant must have indeed been very painful for a passionate collector like yourself!!
      Yep, they do need to be watched carefully for pests, and as you say, especially as these can easily hide in the woolly areas of these plants. Thankfully, knock wood, mine have not had any major infestations, however I have read that especially older plants (25+ yrs) apparently can have a bad habit of suddenly just dying off, out of the blue...not sure whether this is universally correct, only read this from someone who grows quite a few of them.
      Thanks so much for watching and for sharing your really interesting (...though unfortunately painful) comments and experiences. Have a wonderful weekend ahead, Clyde, best wishes and cactus greetings to Morris Park in the Ozarks!!

      @Flowers Zone thank you so much for your awesome feedback, as always really appreciated!!🙏☺ Haha, yes they do require a bit of patience, unfortunately, but at least they also reward our patience nicely with their beautiful flowers. Yes, I agree with you 100%, autumn cactus flowers are very special and I love them too! When do the temperatures start to drop for the cactus winter break for you where you live in Albania? I guess you can enjoy the cactus autumn flowers for much longer than I can here in southern Germany. Wishing you a wonderful and relaxing weekend ahead, best wishes and happy growing!!

    I just made a video on Ariocarpus too, Joe! My mature fissuratus are all behaving very well and flowering for me in October. That is absolutely amazing that you grew all those beautiful fissuratus from seed! I so hope to follow in your footsteps and be able to share a video in a dozen years on my own Arios grown from seed (if I can keep them alive for that long that is)!

I'm going to check out the Ariocarpus videos on your channel later today! Excellent to hear that your mature Ariocarpus fissuratus are all flowering, and also in October like mine - as I say in the video, October is Ariocarpus month, haha!! I am sure that the seedlings you have will also very quickly mature to large flowering plants!! Hope you have a wonderful Sunday and also a great upcoming week! Once again thanks for watching and supporting, best wishes, Joe

    Very unique cactus, didn't know that one before 👍 It has kind of a special look (probably especially because of the "form")
    Of course very beautiful blooms! 🌸
    And always astonishing to see how much "power" roots have (you can also see that - in a bigger dimension - when tree roots "crack up" the sidewalk for example) 😄

    • @cactusjoe
      @cactusjoe  Год назад

      Hey Jacob, thanks so much for watching and commenting, and I'm very happy to have been able to introduce this interesting cactus to you. Yes indeed, it does have a very special look and form, and the common name "Living Rock Cactus" I find is spot on! Haha, yes as you write, there is an enormous power stored in these tap roots, and I can even see a difference in the bulge of the styrofoam box between winter time dormancy (the roots shrink back a little by Feb/March) vs. the watering season when these 'water tanks' are full, haha! Liebe Grüße, wünsche Dir einen stressfreien Freitag und ein wunderschönes Herbstwochenende!🍁🍂🌞 Happy growing!! 🌵🪴🌱🌵🏵🌸🌺👍😎

    Got 100 to sow soon what's your best tips?
    I've heard sterilisation of the soil is almost the best start but any tips on wetting off or mould growth while germinating?
    Thanks for the content 🤘🤘🤘

    • @cactusjoe
      @cactusjoe  Год назад +1

      Hi there! Thanks for watching and commenting, appreciated! I would indeed recommend sterilising the sowing substrate first, use a fully mineral-based one, like Vermiculite or fine basaltic or quarz sand, no peat or other organic components, wet well and then close container e.g. lid or zip-lock bag. Keep in warm, bright location but out of direct sunlight! Semi transparent rice paper can work quite well for shading. Hope this is useful info, best of luck and success with that batch of 100! Happy growing!!🌵🌵🌵🌱🌱🌱😊👍👍😎
