The problem is with assuming "how we understand homosexuality today" - as if any traditional understanding is anachronistic. This implicitly takes for granted that we are making real progress in understanding homosexuality. I wholeheartedly disagree that we have somehow gotten better at understanding this sinful behavior.

There is also this bizarre conflation going on between same-sex acts and "progress" as if giving into base physical desires without thinking is somehow the modern thing to do. It's a weird rejection of the reality that controlling one's body is the modern concept and simply giving into whatever feels good without thinking of the consequences or logical reasons not to is what humans were much more likely to do in ancient times.

My response to the "Jesus never said that" argument would be to ask that person to read the words of Jesus in Matthew 5:31-32, Matthew 19:4-9, and Mark 10:3-12. Then I would ask them if they could gleam anything from those words in favor of anything outside of marriage between a man and a woman.

well first destroy any pretext of red text argument using the red text "It is right for us to meet all the Law's demands - let it be so now" "The scripture says" "I assure you that, while Heaven and earth last, the Law will not lose a single dot or comma until its purpose is complete." and then use Matthew 19:4-6 "Haven't you read," he replied, "that at the beginning the Creator `made them male and female,' and said, `For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh' ? So they are no longer two, but one. Therefore what God has joined together, let man not separate.""

Sure, that would be an argument. But someone could simply say “but He was talking about divorce, not homossexual acts!”
This is why I’d strengthen this argument with the passages quoted above *after* having already discussed Leviticus and Romans in that order. Old Testament, then New so we establish that the moral Law hasn’t changed. Then discuss the Greek terms for men-bedders and effeminates, THEN finish with the Gospel of Mark and Matthew.

G.K. Chesterton wrote an excellent essay called _About Shamelessness._ In the essay Chesterton describes what he believes to be the real underlying problem with modern-day hedonism. The issue is not just the sexual perversions themselves, but the complete lack of shame and disgust regarding them.
People in the past did these things, but they never wanted people to know about it. They understood it was wrong. The last thing on earth they would do is take pride in their perversion; or proudly proclaim it as some kind of "identity".
Chesterton (correctly I believe) links this degradation of shame and disgust to moral relativism. I strongly recommend this essay.

So people are less homophobic and ur mad about it? U can intellectualize it all u want but ur just trying to justify ur base prejudices. Should wr also return to the days where we looked at black ppl and race mixing with disgust? The author u mention was also deeply antisemitic. Seems like theres a pattern here of trying to intellectually justify bigotry. And btw, there’s nothing inherently hedonistic about homosexuality. Its not as if all homosexuals are primarily straight but have gay sex when they are bored with straight sex . Lmao

      @@RationalistMH
"Its not as if all homosexuals are primarily straight but have gay sex when they are bored with straight sex."
Kleptomaniacs and Pyromaniacs may indeed be "born that way". That doesn't make what they do correct. And, no, I'm not making a comparison. I'm simply saying that being born with a desire to do something does not automatically make it right. If that were the case, "I was born this way" could be used to justify anything. There may be a genetic influence on all our behaviors.
Race mixing was considered immoral. I'm not sure if it was considered disgusting. It was not unusual to find white women having affairs with black men. Our sense of disgust is very different. People feel disgust when somebody does something bizarre or irrational.
For example, if I'm walking down the street and a guy grabs a woman's purse, I would get angry because it's an immoral act. But suppose that guy, instead of grabbing the purse, picked a large spider off the ground and started to eat it. That may not actually be immoral per se. Maybe the guy is starving. I wouldn't feel anger towards that person, but it would trigger my sense of disgust.
I should have made this distinction in my original post.

I could go through the whole line of argumentation of why, logically, homosexual acts constitute a misuse of the life-giving marital act. If God permits, it may be comprehensively proven without allowing a shred of doubt right here, in this comment section.
However, it'll be quite tragic to go to such lengths this Monday night on a mind that doesn't hesitate to put itself above its Maker, or (God forbid!) to declare its nerdy heroes as the ones who have unraveled all the mysteries of the Universe and found them unimpressive.
Such heroes, unfortunately, hold onto no such delusions, given that most of scientists do profess a belief in a higher power that's revealed through Creation.
Einstein, ever the critic of established religions and according to his essays titled as "Science and Religion", held firmly the belief that no scientist who's half-way decent would reject the notion of a Creator, even if one as impersonal and inanimate as the one he himself believed. The work of a man of science is a work of worship, one that holds no meaning if it was under a godless cosmos.
But no, we know better already. Nay, he says, we're at the epitome of Knowledge, our new studies have once and for all solved the age-old question of Human Meaning, and found it to be exactly what the elusive RationalistMH already believed.

Casey seems to use it as a characteristic intrinsic to the person. And yes, we do need someone to remind us the difference between condemning acts and condemning people apart from their acts. To use alcohoism properly, as anyone in AA can tell you, a person with alcoholism may never touch another drink, yet still have alcoholism. FYI, another way to see homosexuality a part of society, as in, "homosexuality in America." This is a third issue.

Father Casey isn’t some self-taught pseudo-scholar; at some point, his Franciscan seminary instructors and formators solidified these positions and supporting arguments in Father Casey, which of course get turned into these videos. It’s like when he did that ridiculous “prison workers are actually chattel slaves” video, I was thinking to myself “this is absolutely a stereotypical modern Franciscan/Jesuit take, someone in the order had to lay this out at one point and Casey gravitated to it.”

And I get it, its beyond a lot of people to grasp just why anyone would do this, never mind how. Because we're all genuinely good people who'd never consider deconstructing anything out of spite or some sadistic desire to cause pain. Its hard to think that there are a bunch of people out there who vow to do exactly that - it still comes hard to me and I've been engaging in this culture war for over a decade, it still breaks my heart to think about this stuff. There are many of us wanting to raise a holy standard against all manner of sin. The subversion is in all the churches, and tragically, those w/ large public platforms and ordinations can peddle their subversive wares to the weak in faith, and those thinking of coming into Christianity.

Due to growing with SSA and being preached that "the heart is deceitful and must always be kept on watch" I've deprived myself from feeling must emotions. Reason and logic is my go to on how-to react to everything that happens on my life. Yet I've come to realize the other day while I was praying for this though crossed my mind "Lord I pray for those young people that are going to realize today the path that you are calling them while experiencing SSA." I started to cry deeply, and discover that myself that realization (aka for me meaning to give up "voluntarily" not only the dream of being married and have a family, the guilt, being misunderstood, live hiding, etc) was a deeply painful event for me, and still seems to be every time I get close to recall it.
At that moment a thought cross my mind "Wouldn't have been better to be raised up an atheist or in affirming faith?" I think it will save at least the experience of having to dealt with guilt or shame for being SSA that it seems faith brings in.
So then I though that, although the Catholic Church doesn't condemn homosexual people, they clearly point out that the acts are "disordered" and doesn't go beyond "they should pursue chaste friendships", this doesn't prevents or helps a young man who is in their late teens to accept the fact that they experience SSA to accept it, let alone that they must not feel ashamed or guilt about it.
My opinion is that this recommendations only seem to address people who already seem to be wrestling on how to reconcile their faith with their reality, like a "I am gay yet I am also a believer... how can this work?", yet their teenage years the faith didn't equip them to address the fact that they may be SSA on how to deal it, on the contrary, sometimes getting the message that it is an "abomination" or that "they won't inherit the kingdom".
So in this context, How can we turn faith an asset rather than a burden for those teenagers that are believers?

Second you don't have to give those up if/when you're not living in that sinful state. In other words, you defined yourself as only being this one sinful way, and then you closed yourself off to living a normal, moral Christian life.
No one should be accepting the sinful state. In other words you should be ashamed about it and have guilt. Those are motivations to do the right moral thing and stop being a lustful pervert who commits sins and then views themselves as identifying as those sins.

There is no such thing as a homosexual, as in someone who was made to be attracted to the same sex. No no no no no and no! Protestants, Anglicans and some Modernist Catholics did. We orthodox Christians don't. We know that it's among what the Old Testament lists as abominations. And We have a clear spiritual understanding of what abomination is : Something that defiles, profane or desecrate. One is to put an idol in the holy place. Another is the desolation (desertification) of the holy place. It's not just another sin. So the blessing of an abomination is not a pastoral issue of economy but a sacrilege practice. Yet another one one may say. How many others before they piled up to heaven, and God remembers those crimes.

People that are same sex attracted have always been around. This particular sin has always been around. I don't think we can deny the reality of that. It wouldn't be mentioned in the bible if it wasn't always a problem. I think the newer problem you were trying to articulate is that they've taken it on as an identity. That's the paradigm shift and the lie. It's like saying, I'm a fornicator or an adulterer, that's just who I am. If you tell me to change that, you're attacking my very identity. That's the gay agenda stance now. It's not a reality though, we can still be called to repentance, because what we really are is children of God, called to live a life as holy as we can, for love of God and the good of society, and for the best chance at raising healthy children.

The problem my friend, is that Paul is not only condemning the men and women who participate in acts of homosexuality, but he also explains why these people have fallen into this sin: In his opinion, homosexuality is the consequence of idolatry. "Although they claimed to be wise, they became fools and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images made to look like a mortal human being and birds and animals and reptiles." (Romans 1:22) It is a path downwards: Idolatry leads to homosexuality, homosexuality to deprivation of the mind, and deprivation of the mind to malice of every kind. This is expressed in Romans 1.
Is there any person in the Catholic Church today, from the Pope down to the last Catholic who really believes that homosexuality is born out of idolatry? Do you? Can any of you find any other reference in the Bible to the contrary? You all know that Paul's understanding is extremely limited, yet you have to defend his views since you believe the Bible to be inerrant (at least in the New Testament). Yet, a homosexual may be born even in the most pious Catholic family and you can't address this problem with Paul's cannonades

People are being infected with chemicals and by being abused, and brainwashed by judaeo-media (movies, tv, etc.) - it's a sin, it's not a personality, but people are accepting it, which is also a sin. No one is saying they identify as a fornicator, but don't fornicate so it's acceptable - because we'll all know the identifying as the sin and partaking in the action of the sin are both morally wrong.

These modernist "priests" are lying to people and claiming that homosexuality is not a sin (just acting on it is). That's false. People are identifying themselves with the sin, by claiming it's a part of them. If they were holy people of purity, they wouldn't be giving in to their sinful thoughts/actions on this topic or any other. Just like there is no such thing as a kleptomaniac Christian or murderer Christian - you can't identify yourself as sins (accepting them) and think you're living as a moral Christian in a state of Grace.

TY for critiquing Fr Casey’s video, to which he turned off the comments. At the end Trent mentions how Fr Casey DOES uphold the Catholic teaching - but he actually does not., bc the dogma applies to all homosexual behavior - And he is saying that the current teaching does not necessarily apply to many ss couples of today - (who are devout couples in loving lifelong, marital -type relationships. )
This message reveals the reason for Francis teaching that it is unjust to make homosexual behavior illegal. And Fr James Martin teaching along the same line, that God has not YET revealed about devout homosexual couples, and so they are not in sin (and once it’s revealed they will be OK!) . So Francis tries to ensure it’s accepted in society at least at a secular level by the state-, Fiducia Supplicants specifically does not mention the purpose w goal of leading them away from the relationships, and it goes hand in hand w the Synodal process of meeting people and inviting them in as they are.. So it’s all orchestrated and ready for this new “truth” to be “revealed” to the “Magisterium” that homosexuality in the context of how it is practiced TODAY can be good, as long as it is not outside of marriage or something else they call a lifelong commitment. So all the pieces are being put in place for it all to come together. Fr Casey says he agrees w Cburch teaching , but he does not bc there IS NO exception that applies to the “enlightened” people on society today . Fr. Casey’s message is NOT Agreement w Church teaching, but the HERESY of Modernism
