How wonderful to hear Abida Aunty educate us of the importance of sticking to our roots! Being in the US my husband’s family, a very traditional old family also from Calicut knows her family very well. I am on the lookout for traditional pots and utensils. You ladies did a fabulous job interviewing her! Hope you do more of these to showcase other cooks from this region
U r very true. We malabaries have a great affinity for inviting guests and our authentic food is actually the same as that of the Chinese and Arabian dishes because we r actually settlers from all over the world. Like Mahi had a French influence, Calicut had Portuguese culture and Tellicherry was influenced by the duch. The moplas of north Malabar has a Arabian culture. Hence we enjoy a wonderful mixed culture and variety of food. Her in Mumbai when they served us lazinia we were shocked to see that it resembled our own chatti pathari. Wonderful interview. Great knowledge gained. I come to Calicut to buy authentic vessels.
It was a wonderful interview. Such a pleasure listening to Abida ma'am sharing her deep interest in cooking the typical Mappilah dishes in the traditional way, her passion for preserving the culinary legacy of her community, and her sustained efforts to make people understand the benefits of food cooked in cast iron, copper, stone and even the humble claypots. It is her humility, sincerity and absolute devotion to the Mappilah culinary traditions that make her the living legend that she is. Thank you both for this well presented interview.
Girls, can you also talk about your traditional attire..hardly see it these days. All I see is it being replaced by the styles from the middle east! So true about retaining our culture!!I love this lady!!
@Shakuntala Oh please..We are no better. Where are our traditional styles of clothing gone..I see a lot of jeans in this hot 🔥weather. The food habits and preferences ,what the west is trying their best to wean, we embrace. Speaking in English is considered "cultured and sophisticated " . Respecting your mother mother tongue and country is not a requirement anymore. Majority of us don't know anything anymore about our heritage or ancient ways. We have no right to point fingers at others when we haven't got our act together. Sending our kids to west and earning plenty are the only criteria for today's parents. Any group of people who are not connected to their roots will be challenged as time goes by..history is full of examples!
Superb 👌👌👌. Started to watch your channel accidentally around 2 months back and now I am happy to say that I am addicted. Really superb presentation... 🥰. I have my own tech channel (another I’d) but still feel like to become a part of your team 😇. Keep going ... 👍🏻
The interview was great till the comment on MBBS student who don’t know how to cook. There is no shame in not knowing how to cook when one’s focus is completing education. A doctor’s skill is saving people’s life not cooking. People can learn to cook after they get job as well. Even if they don’t cook, there are many people selling homemade food. A person cooking food cannot treat a patient, only a doctor can do that. Astronauts mostly eat packaged meals in space, it is hard to cook with gravity.
